Safe Schools, Strong Connections, Growing Together
Dear Viking Families,
October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an important reminder of the work required to protect our students, schools, and information. Technology supports so much of what happens each day at North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS), from classroom learning and family communication to building security and essential school operations.
Cybersecurity threats have become increasingly complex, and school districts across Minnesota have experienced disruptions from cyberattacks. Earlier this month, our technology team, led by Darin Marcussen, responded to a statewide security alert by taking additional precautions to protect district systems. I appreciate the expertise and dedication of our technology professionals who work every day to keep our schools safe and our systems secure.
We are also intentional about how students use technology. Our focus has shifted toward balanced, purposeful technology use, with an emphasis on digital citizenship and online safety. Our media specialists and classroom teachers help students recognize online risks, protect personal information, and make responsible choices. Families can reinforce these skills through conversations about online safety, strong passwords, and thoughtful use of digital devices.
There is so much to celebrate across our schools! In this month's Viking Family Newsletter, you'll find stories about students exploring new learning opportunities, demonstrating leadership and service, and participating in memorable school and community experiences. From hands-on outdoor learning to student achievements and our Un-Scary Halloween celebration, these stories offer a glimpse into the many ways our Vikings are learning and growing.
I also look forward to seeing many of you at parent-teacher conferences! These conversations are an important opportunity to celebrate your child's progress, connect with teachers, and work together to support continued growth.
Forward Together,
Sara Paul

Learning Through the Outdoors
Learning Beyond the School Walls
The open grassland and wooded areas surrounding Sunrise River Elementary already offer exciting opportunities for hands-on learning. Wildflowers have been planted, and a wetland area has been created where water naturally drains and collects. These spaces allow students to explore plants, wildlife, water systems, science, mathematics, reading, and more through observation and discovery.
The long-term vision is to continue developing a permanent outdoor learning space that Sunrise students and classrooms can use regularly. By taking learning beyond the school walls, students can build curiosity and discover that learning can happen anywhere.
New Middle School Courses Encourage Outdoor Exploration
This year, the middle school is offering two new courses that connect students with the outdoors.
Off the Grid, a seventh-grade course, introduces students to activities and skills including fishing, camping, fire-building, and archery. Local experts have also visited the class to share their knowledge and expose students to a variety of outdoor essentials.
Explore Minnesota, a sixth-grade course, focuses on the natural resources and landscapes that make our state unique. Students learn about local flora and fauna while developing a greater appreciation for Minnesota’s natural beauty and the many opportunities it offers.
Outdoor Adventures
The high school’s Outdoor Adventures course immerses students in the natural world through hands-on learning. Students develop survival skills, study native plants and wildlife, and examine how people affect nature and how the natural world affects us.
Throughout the course, students build fires and shelters and participate in field trips that challenge them outdoors while deepening their understanding of our local environment. These experiences build confidence, curiosity, and a stronger connection to the world around them.
Celebrating 36 New National Honor Society Members
North Branch Area High School recently welcomed 36 students into the National Honor Society. This recognition honors students who demonstrate excellence in four key areas: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Membership in the National Honor Society reflects more than strong academic achievement. These students lead by example, serve others, and make a positive difference in their school and community. Congratulations to all 36 inductees on this well-earned recognition.
Un-Scary Halloween Party Welcomes Nearly 800 Guests
The North Branch Area Education Center was filled with costumes, treats, and family fun during the Un-Scary Halloween Party. Approximately 800 people attended, including nearly 400 children and 400 adults. Families enjoyed indoor trick-or-treating, games, a walk-through experience, and plenty of treats.
The event was sponsored by North Branch Area Community Education with help from North Branch Area High School National Honor Society members. Thank you to the volunteers and families who helped make the evening such a successful community celebration.

Alexis Sway Represents USA and Gives Back
In August, Alexis Sway was crowned Preteen Universe USA 2027 in Chicago. During the coming year, Alexis will represent the United States and will travel to Panama in February to compete for the title of Preteen Universe International.
Alexis is also using this opportunity to support the North Branch community. Alexis recently donated canned goods to our elementary, middle, and high schools to support Viking Vittles, which provides food and other resources for students who may need a little extra help.
Congratulations, Alexis, and thank you for demonstrating leadership, generosity, and Viking pride both at home and beyond!
Leadership in Action
Student-athlete leaders from several of our high school sports teams recently participated in the Mississippi 8 Student Summit. They connected with team leaders from other schools while learning about leadership, identifying their values, and exploring ways to build character within their teams. This opportunity gave our students a chance to reflect on the kind of leaders they want to be and bring new ideas back to their teammates and school community.
Bekah Wurdemann Named Mississippi 8 MVP
Congratulations to Rebekah Wurdemann on being named the Mississippi 8 Conference Most Valuable Player! She is the first North Branch tennis player in school history to earn this honor.
Rebekah also finished third in Section 7AA as the Vikings’ No. 1 singles player. She battled Rock Ridge’s Ellie in a competitive semifinal match, falling 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Her outstanding season, dedication, and competitive spirit have made North Branch proud.
