LOST & FOUND

Anything look familiar? Please plan to check the lost and found before our Wellness Week break. Over the first quarter of the school year, jackets, hoodies, water bottles, and lunchboxes, tend to pile up. Stop by before the break and check our green box located in the corner of the gymnasium. While you're at it, consider labeling items with your child's name or initials so they find their way home next time. A few minutes now could save you from replacing a favorite sweatshirt or a pricey water bottle.

Columbus City Schools is joining the City of Columbus and Vision Zero partners to recognize Traffic Safety Awareness Week, Oct. 26–30, and raise awareness about the importance of keeping our roads safe for everyone.

Whether walking to school, riding a bike, driving, or using public transportation, we all play a role in preventing traffic crashes and protecting one another. Simple actions like obeying speed limits, using crosswalks, avoiding distractions, and staying alert to our surroundings can make a big difference.

Students, families, and community members are encouraged to put safety first and help create safer streets in our neighborhoods and around our schools.

Take the Vision Zero Safety Pledge! Commit to safe habits on the road and help protect everyone who travels through our community.

Family Ambassador Notes

Parent-teacher conferences for our 4th and 5th grade gators are coming soon! Before your meeting, take a few minutes to talk with your child about school. Think about any questions you want to ask the teacher.

Here are some questions you could ask:

  • Is my child completing classwork and homework?

  • Does my child bring the materials needed for class?

  • Does my child pay attention and participate in class?

  • Does my child ask for help when needed?

  • Does my child get along with other students?

  • How is my child doing in reading, writing, and math?

  • What can I do at home to help my child learn?

Why Are Conferences Important?

Conferences help you understand how your child is doing in school. You can learn about your child's strengths and areas where they may need help. You can also talk with the teacher about ways to support your child's learning at home.

Let's Work Together to Help Our Gators Succeed!

Your involvement makes a difference! Please schedule a conference with your child's teacher. When families and teachers work together, students have more support to learn and grow.

Talking Points

Gables Elementary utilizes TalkingPoints as a comprehensive schoolwide communication tool to engage families. In fact, parents are encouraged to use this tool in an effort to engage more with teachers.

It is easy to access because all families automatically have the primary contact from the Parent Portal “opted in” to receive messages. Initially, you’ll receive messages via text on your cell phone until you download and activate the TalkingPoints app. Once activated, you can promptly reply to messages received through TalkingPoints with any questions or comments. We particularly appreciate the feature that automatically translates messages into over 150 languages! Columbus City Schools highly recommends down loading the free talking points app https://bit.ly/3OHpsGO for a better communication experience.

* Parents please note, some teachers are using Talking Points on a daily basis.

Now that we have reviewed the zones of regulation, let’s talk about what to do when your child finds him or herself in a particular zone!

When children are in the Yellow Zone, they may feel frustrated, worried, excited, or overwhelmed.

Here are some things you can do:

  • 💛 Take deep breaths — breathe in slowly and breathe out.

  • 💛 Take a short break — find a quiet place to relax.

  • 💛 Count to 10 — give yourself time to think before reacting.

  • 💛 Ask for help — talk to a parent, teacher, or trusted adult.

  • 💛 Use positive self-talk — remind yourself, “I can calm down, and I can make a good choice.”

  • 💛 Get moving — stretch, walk, or do another calming activity.
