I'm New...What is AVID? 🙋
AVID stands for: Advancement Via Individual Determination.
It is a program that transforms a school's culture, instruction, systems and leadership and closes opportunity gaps for students.
AVID provides teachers with consistent tools and best practices to be able to provide students with opportunities and skills necessary to become career and college ready while prioritizing relationships so everyone can achieve their full potential.
Slater Elementary, Hines Middle, and Burns High School integrate AVID strategies across all grade levels, in every classroom, for every student. At the middle and high school levels, there are also AVID Elective courses offered to provide focused instruction in key academic and organizational skills. At HCSD3, we believe that every student can succeed through determination, opportunity, and personalized support throughout their educational journey!
WE ARE READY TO MAKE THIS SCHOOL YEAR INCREDIBLE!!!
AVID Summer Institute 2025! 😎
19 teachers and administrators recently attended AVID’s Summer Institute in San Diego to engage in 3 days of professional development, goal reflection and planning, and team building! 5 more staff members engaged in some virtual learning through AVID Ignite! Everyone gained knowledge and skills to help ALL students succeed through courses specific to each person's role.
Back to School with AVID 🎒
🎓 AVID Starts Career & College Readiness on Day One!
From the first day of school, AVID helps all students build the skills they need to succeed, like staying organized, thinking critically, working with others, and setting goals. Whatever stage in their educational journey, AVID gives students the tools and support to plan for their future with confidence.
How you can support at home:
✅ 1. Get Organized EarlySupport the school's binder or folder system by encouraging tidiness and responsibility.
📝 2. Use a Planner Daily
Students write down assignments and due dates. Check their planner at home each night.
🧠 3. Create a Study Spot
Pick a quiet place at home with supplies ready for homework.
🤝 4. Set Goals Together
Start the year with simple academic or personal goals to stay motivated.
📚 5. Take and Review Notes
Students use structured notes in class. Ask them to share them with you regularly.
