Wixom Howler

August 25-28

Wixom HowlerAugust 25-28

We had such an amazing first week of school! Thank you to all the parents that helped with the smooth transition for arrival and dismissal. We still have a little work to do in our dismissal process, but as our staff learns students and the car they are associated with, things will run faster.

To my JK and Kindergarten parents, YOU DID IT! The first week is always the toughest, but the kids are ready! This week we will not be allowing any parents to enter the building unless you need to go to the main office. We do have many staff members stationed just inside the doors to help students find their classes. If you could also help us out in another way. Please make sure you student knows their teacher name, knows their first and last name and if they are ordering hot lunch for the day. This will be extremely helpful for the lunchroom procedures. Thank you for your cooperation!

If there is anything you need, please don't hesitate to ask. We are here to help. Let's make it an amazing second week!

Kindly,

Carrie O'Connell

Book Fair Information

Dear Wixom Wolves Families,

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Wixom Elementary! Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Book Fair benefits our school.

Here’s what you need to know about the big event:

  • Students will get a chance to preview the Book Fair during their Media time on Friday, September 5th & Monday, September 8th.

  • Students will be able to shop at the Book Fair when their class signs up during the school day from September 9th through September 11th and during their lunch recess time.
  • The Book Fair will also be open during Curriculum Nights on September 9th and 10th for families to shop.

Like any activity we host, we need parent volunteers to help run our book fair. Please use this to sign up to help with the Book Fair. We can't do this without parent volunteers!

If you choose not to send cash, you can set up an eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Book Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy. Did you know you CAN use transfer eWallet funds from a previous fair onto this year's eWallet? Check out this video (specifically chapter 3) to see how!

If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school. This year, you are also able to Pre-Order the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dog Man books that will be published this fall!

Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/wixomelementaryschool

Thank you as always for your continued support of our school!

New Sign In/Out

When you come to the school to sign your child/children out, you’ll now find two Chromebooks set up in the vestibule: one for signing students in or out, and the other for dropping off items.

Office volunteers will continue to sign in and out on a Chromebook inside the office and wear a visitor badge. If you’re signing your child/children out, please make sure to do so before 3:15 PM. After that time, students will need to remain until dismissal, as the office can get quite busy with only one secretary available to call students down.

Safety and Security: Please Read the New Policy

Our students’ safety is of primary importance to us. The Walled Lake School District uses a video entry system at every school. During school hours, all visitors must enter through the Main Entry and use the video system by pressing the button and stating their name and purpose. Once verified, you will be admitted into a secure vestibule. Please do not attempt to enter through any other doors. We ask for your patience, as our office staff may be busy, and there could be a brief delay at certain times of the day.

For the security of our students and staff, all entrances are locked once the school day begins. Please do not ask a staff member or student to let you in through any door, and do not hold the door for another adult approaching the building. All visitors must be admitted individually through the front entrance by office staff. Your cooperation helps us maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone in our school community.

Door Dash

Starting this year, there will be no deliveries to the school by Door Dash. The office staff does not have the capacity to manage this for the entire school.

Transportation

*Patience- Buses will likely be late both morning and afternoon for the first several days of school. The transportation hotline (248-956-3090) is updated for all buses that are running 10 or more minutes behind schedule. New routines are a learned process for our students, staff, parents, and community. Ensuring every student is in the right place is critical to our mission and takes extra time during that learning process.

Just a friendly reminder that all Kindergarten students must have an adult at the bus stop! If a parent would like their Kindergarten student to get off the bus alone of with a sibling rider, they MUST fill out a drop off permission slip and give to the bus driver. These forms can be received from the bus driver or the WLCSD transportation website.

FREE School Meals Update

The Michigan School Meals program will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch for all students through September 30, 2025. Funding for the program beyond that date has not yet been finalized. If the state does not extend funding, families who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals under federal guidelines may need to pay for meals beginning October 1.

To help us prepare, families are encouraged to complete the Child Nutrition and Education Benefits Application in Skyward Family Access during online registration. This form helps secure funding, supports educational programs, and may provide additional benefits such as reduced testing fees, discounted college applications, and lower internet costs.

The District's Food Service Department will share updates as soon as more information becomes available.
