The Riverwalk Roar

A Note from Dr. Compton
Happy Sunday, Pride!
I hope everyone is doing well and had a wonderful weekend. We had a busy, and fantastic, week at Riverwalk Academy!
The week began with the release of our SC School Report Card data, followed by a visit from Mr. Chris Neeley, Superintendent of the South Carolina Public Charter School District, who spent the day connecting with students and staff.
Midweek, our 8th Grade Theatre 1 students wowed audiences with a performance of Holka Polka: A Fairytale Mysterythat highlighted their creativity, collaboration, and hard work.
On Thursday, our 3rd and 4th grade students were treated to a special visit from Hugo, the mascot of the Charlotte Hornets, who led an engaging assembly about the importance of finding a passion for reading.
We also celebrated some exciting news from our elementary STEM program. Ms. Alyssa Long, our elementary STEM teacher, was awarded a $1,000 Bright Ideas Grant from York Electric Cooperative for her project, “Robots in the Classroom: Building Future Innovators.” Her project will bring hands-on learning opportunities in robotics and coding to our students, helping them explore creativity and problem-solving in exciting new ways.
We closed out the week on a high note with our Veterans Day Assembly for our elementary students, organized by our very own Ms. Terra Carney, elementary special education teacher and proud Air Force veteran. It was a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to those who have served our country.
And as if that weren’t enough excitement, our boys and girls cross country teams both captured first place at the 1A Upper State Qualifier, earning their spot at the State Championships this Friday in Aiken!
During Mr. Neeley’s visit on Wednesday, I had the opportunity to brag about our amazing staff and students. What made it even better was that he was able to see firsthand what makes Riverwalk Academy so special. His visit began with an interview conducted by our High School Hype Team, who impressed everyone with their poise, confidence, and ability to think on their feet. Watching our students collaborate, communicate, and adapt so naturally was the perfect reflection of “The Riverwalk Way.”
Yes, academic outcomes—our world-class knowledge—are vitally important. But equally important is our why: developing world-class skills such as creativity, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, communication, and self-directed learning. These are the qualities that prepare our students not just for tests, but for life.
As we head into a new week, I’m reminded of how much there is to celebrate within our Pride—our students’ accomplishments, our teachers’ dedication, and the incredible sense of community that makes Riverwalk Academy so special. Thank you for your continued support and for walking beside us, every step of the way.
In Pride and Purpose,
~Dr. Compton

Last Friday, our staff had the opportunity to participate in a variety of professional development sessions led by their peers. Topics included personality traits (pictured, led by Ms. Turner), Type 1 Diabetes awareness, and grants for educators. We value making the most of our Fridays, and one of the best things about our school is the autonomy we have to lead each other in areas we’re passionate about.
Middle School Math Night
Thursday is World Kindness Day! Let's show each other some extra kindness and be a neighbor! Staff and students, wear a cardigan and/or dress like Mr. Rogers to show your support!
Our GT and Student Council clubs will be collecting items in both buildings beginning this week! If you have any questions reach out to Ms. Long (K-5) or Ms. Benderson (6-12th)! Items should be new and unopened, Operation Christmas Child is a project by Samaritan’s Purse that sends gift-filled shoeboxes to children in need around the world. Each box shares joy, hope, and the spirit of Christmas with kids who might not otherwise receive a gift.
