PRINCIPAL PONDERINGS PRINCIPAL PONDERINGS

Hello Blackhawks,

Welcome back! We hope you and your children enjoyed a restful, joyful winter break filled with time to recharge and reconnect. As we begin this new calendar year, we are excited to welcome our students back as we continue to partner with you in their learning and growth.

Returning from a nice long break always brings a mix of energy, anticipation, and renewal. My own renewal comes from some quality time with family, listening to music, and catching up on reading and podcasts. I am currently reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell for pleasure and Building Thinking Classrooms in Math by Peter Liljedahl professionally. I have also been watching/listening to a variety of podcasts and videos related to the importance of innovation in education. One of my favorites was a keynote address by Tony Wagner at the Future Focused Ed conference in Boston a couple of years ago.

I am returning from the break recommitted to the notion that this is an exciting time to be in education. It is also a time that requires us to look deeply and innovatively at what our children and our communities need to thrive in our fast-paced world. Personally, I believe we need more joy, more comfort with mistakes (and trust in the process), and most importantly, increased collaboration. As educators, we are continuously engaged in discussion of how to best prepare our students through our program, curriculum, and grading/assessment practices. One hope I have for 2026 is to engage more regularly - both formally and informally - with parents and our wider community.

Thank you for your trust, your involvement, and the many ways you contribute to making PES such a special place. We are truly looking forward to continuing our journey of learning, growth, and connection as we collectively model the importance of fun, trial & error, and collaboration for our children.

Warmly,

Audra Bucklin

P.S. I forgot to share about music. I came across a song by Let’s Grow Kids - “I Hear Something Beautiful” [youtu.be]- featuring one of my favorites, Kat Wright. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

PTA UPDATES PTA UPDATES

As 2025 comes to a close, the PTA would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has engaged with us in supporting PES so far this year, whether that be coming to meetings, volunteering at events, helping in the garden or bringing in food for parent-teacher conference days. We are so grateful to be a part of this vibrant school community!

A couple fundraising updates:

-The 6th annual Blackhawk Blaze in October brought in just over $2,400 for the PTA and $2,400 for the class of 2027.

-The PTA Craft Fair netted $240 for the PTA. (thanks goes out to Emily Crouse for spearheading this new event!)

The PTA continues to accept funding requests from PES teachers to enrich the classroom learning environment. As part of this program, we have just approved the purchase of a mini-pottery wheel for Ms. Wolfinger's art classroom to be purchased early in the new year.

Please mark your calendars for our next PTA meeting which will take place at the Meriden Library on Wednesday, January 14th from 7-8 with a social hour at Poor Thom's to follow.

4 WINDS 4 WINDS

Volunteers Needed for Four Winds Nature Program

Want to learn more about nature? Eager to share the joy of discovery with children? Become a Four Winds volunteer and join a group of community members who share both an interest in nature and a love of children.

Four Winds Nature Institute is a community-based organization that provides natural science education for all ages. As a Four Winds Nature Program volunteer, you will bring fun and engaging natural science lessons to the children at Cornish or Plainfield Elementary School, in Kindergarten through Grade 4.

Adult volunteers from both towns meet for five two-hour workshops throughout the school year. The site of the workshops alternates between the Cornish and Plainfield Schools. At each workshop a member of the Four Winds staff walks the volunteers through a fascinating natural science topic by demonstrating activities that will be done later with the students.

After the workshops volunteers bring these lessons to the classroom. Many of the activities involve taking the children outdoors, to the nearby fields and woods, for an up-close look at things related to the topic. This is the best way to learn about the natural world.

Our teachers are always involved when the volunteers are with their students. This is a way to support them, as it is not always easy to take a whole class outside without extra hands. It is also a great way to meet other people in our community and give the important and rewarding gift of your time to the children in our school.
