It's been a great year, Titans! ⚡
The Berea City School District is proud to share that Superintendent Tracy Wheeler has been selected as one of five recipients of the prestigious Ohio Superintendent Award of Excellence, presented by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. This statewide recognition is awarded to superintendents who demonstrate exemplary leadership, a clear and impactful vision, and a commitment to advancing public education across their districts and communities.
Each year, the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation honors one Ohio Superintendent of the Year and recognizes five additional leaders with the Award of Excellence. Mrs. Wheeler’s selection for this distinguished honor reflects the high regard in which she is held by her peers, colleagues, and educational leaders throughout Ohio.
Since becoming the first female superintendent in Berea City School District’s history in 2019, Mrs. Wheeler has led with integrity, compassion, and a deep belief in the potential of every student. Under her leadership, the district has continued to grow its focus on deeper learning, student wellness, and community engagement, while navigating the complex challenges that have faced public schools in recent years. She is known for her calm and steady leadership, her thoughtful decision-making, and her consistent commitment to support both students and staff.
As part of the award, Mrs. Wheeler will receive a $1,000 grant to be used toward a project or initiative within the Berea City School District. She will be formally recognized at the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation’s Annual Educator Awards Banquet on Thursday, July 24, where educators from across the state will gather to celebrate excellence in education.
Please join us in congratulating Superintendent Tracy Wheeler on this incredible and well-earned recognition. Her leadership continues to strengthen our schools and inspire our Titans community.

Portrait to Practice
The Portrait of a Titan is a collective vision that articulates aspirations for ALL of our students. The Portrait identifies six key competencies that every student in the Berea City School District should possess by the time they graduate. These competencies are nurtured at every grade level. They are adaptable, communicator, critical thinker, empathetic, innovative, and leader. Our educators are inspiring students to cultivate these essential skills.
From Pen to Person: Titans Connect Through Communication 🧡💙💬
Since January, second graders at Grindstone Elementary and tenth graders at Berea-Midpark High School have been pen pals, exchanging handwritten letters and learning about each other one message at a time.
Recently, the two groups met in person for the first time. They read together, played games, shared snacks, and spent time talking face-to-face. The excitement was clear, but what stood out most was how easily the conversations flowed.
This experience was a reminder of the power of communication. Through writing and in-person conversations, students discovered how words can build understanding and friendship. It was a real-life example of the Portrait of a Titan in action, showing how strong communication can bring people together and create lasting connections across our schools.
Middle School Student Entrepreneurs Bring Bold Ideas to Life 🍔🌯🚚
This year’s Berea-Midpark Middle School Food Truck Wars once again gave students a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity, communication skills, and entrepreneurial thinking.
Fifteen original food truck concepts filled the cafeteria, each featuring a distinct theme from sushi and smoothies to donuts and global flavors. Students developed fully branded trucks that included logos, contact information, detailed menus with realistic pricing, and mock social media pages.
Each team also delivered a pitch, describing their favorite menu item, answering questions, and sharing what made their truck stand out. Staff visited each truck and evaluated them on four key areas: creativity of concept, menu design, visual appeal of the truck, and the strength of the sales pitch.
The trucks that earned the “most business” were named the 2025 Food Truck Wars champions. Here were this year's most profitable trucks:
🥇 1st Place – Potato Palooza
🥈 2nd Place – Amazing Avocado
🥉 3rd Place – Shake It Off Shakes
This project is a powerful example of how students bring the Portrait of a Titan to life. They demonstrated innovation through their concepts and branding, communication through their pitches and design, critical thinking in pricing and marketing, and leadership in how they collaborated and presented their ideas.
Who knows? One day, you may see one of these trucks serving up delicious bites in our community.

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.

Treasurer Jill Rowe presented the district’s five-year financial forecast at the May 19, 2025 Board of Education meeting, highlighting stable short-term projections but raising concerns about proposed state legislation that could penalize districts for maintaining strong cash reserves.
