BAS Bond and BHS Specific Information
As you all know at this point, Brighton High School currently has a bond proposal that will be on the ballot as part of a May 5th election. This bond had the ability to impact all of the schools within the district, but has specific implications for BHS as well.
In addition, there are informational flyers in the Main Office and poster boards in the front vestibule and individuals enter the building outlining important information on the bond, as well as building specific information about what changes are proposed. If you have more questions, we recently received a BHS-specific bond board that not only outlines bond basics if you have questions or if anyone reaches out to you, but also has BHS-specific details about projects included in the bond application. The BHS-specific Bond Board can be found here.
In Dr. Outlaw's newsletter this week, he included a link to register to vote and another to request an absentee ballot. For those that are residents, you can request an absentee ballot now and begin voting absentee as early as March 26. Those voting in-person may do so on May 5th.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions and I will do the best I can to answer them for you.
BHS PTO Meeting Information - Next Meeting Tuesday, April 14th @ 7:30 am
The next PTO Meeting will be on Tuesday, April 14th @ 7:30 am in the Main Office Conference Room. All are welcome!

Make Up Standardized Testing - WIN Work Readiness Assessment and/or PSAT and SAT Testing
We have been getting a handful of questions about what to do if a student missed the WIN Work Readiness Assessment or if they miss the PSAT or SAT that is coming up this week for any reason. We will have a make up opportunity for any and all standardized testing. Make up testing for these standardized assessments will be on Wednesday, April 22nd. Any student who misses any of the components of this year's battery of standardized tests should plan to complete the missing assessment on this particular day.

Make Up Attendance Opportunities
We have been reaching out to students who have already exceeded the allowable number of absences for the 2nd Semester. As you are hopefully aware, students are allowed to miss 9 days in a class prior to having to make up any time. Certain types of absences do not count against this total (i.e. school business absences, medically excused absences with a doctor's note, funerals, college visits, etc.). As a reminder, students can make up attendance in a variety of different ways, including:
- Getting extra help with a teacher after school (teacher verifies time spent with the student) for any of their classes
- Detention
- Saturday School
- Coming in on a day that would have otherwise been an off day for students, but administration is present (i.e. Martin Luther King Junior Day, Records Days, etc.)
- Monday, April 6th from 9 am to 3 pm in the Media Center
- Tuesday, April 7th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
- Wednesday, April 8th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
- Thursday, April 9th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
PSAT/SAT Student Guides
Below you will find the student guides for the upcoming Spring standardized testing for this year.
These student guides provide a wealth of information that you and/or your student(s) may find helpful in advance of the upcoming testing. Information provided in these guides includes, but is not limited to, basic test information (sections and testing times), practice test opportunities, important information for both before the test and after, scoring information, score reporting, as well as testing policies and procedures. One of the important policies to be aware of is that students are NOT allowed to access any electronic devices from the time the test starts until the time it ends, including during any breaks that are a part of the testing session. This includes phones, tablets, smart watches, etc.

We have officially implemented a new notification system for students and parents, updating them both on academic progress when the student's grade falls below a 70% in any class. These notifications will go out once per week (on Thursdays to provide students with an opportunity to connect with teachers as needed prior to the weekend) and will include the following message. These notifications are designed to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that we are partnering and proactively working to support our students and their success at BHS!

P.E.O. International and our local Chapter FU/Brighton MI are philanthropic nonprofits committed to assisting women in reaching their educational goals through grants, awards, scholarships, and loans. Our projects include scholarships for high school women, international college students, PhD candidates, and more! (See the website link, below in our social media/distribution kit, regarding the 501(c)(3).)
In our chapter, we have many current and former educators, coaches, and student mentors, one of whom will partner with your student, if selected, to move forward in the state process. Mock Accident Assembly - Save the Date
As you may know, we hold the Mock Accident Assembly every 3 years at BHS. This is done in conjunction with BHS PTO and local first responders and is a very impactful assembly as students prepare for the spring/summer, Prom, and Graduation. This is a school-wide assembly that takes place in the afternoon so that students and staff have the ability to go home afterward.
BHS is hosting this assembly this year for our students. More details will be forthcoming as it gets closer, but for planning purposes it will be held during 5th and 6th Hour on Wednesday, April 29th.
2026 Unified Youth Sports Camp - Save the Date
We are excited to share that we will be hosting our second annual Unified Youth Sports Camp (grades JK-8) on May 5th from 5:00–7:00 pm at Brighton High School! This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate inclusion and bring students of all abilities together through fun, engaging activities.
We would greatly appreciate your support in helping us spread the word to families you may know within the community. Your assistance in sharing this information through social media or other communication channels would help ensure that as many students as possible can take part in this meaningful experience.
I have attached a flyer with a QR code attached for students and families to register. Please let us know if you have any questions. We have somewhat of a quick turnaround after break if students want to get a t-shirt. Students must register by April 13th.
Thank you for your continued support in promoting inclusive opportunities for all students!

Tutoring Options at BHS
National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.
In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.
The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.

Senior Update from Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Miner
Please see the message below from Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Miner, the Grade Level Principal and Counselor for this year's Senior class:
Seniors & Families!
It is hard to believe that we have a little over two months left until Graduation! Time is starting to pick up speed for me and I heard that seniors have 41 more days of school left! Exciting, proud, happy, sad, and sentimental are all colliding as get closer and closer to graduation.
Please see the important information and updates below. As always, please reach out to me with questions and concerns.
Grades
We are nearing the end of the third quarter and we have fourth quarter left to go! Exams are next week, so please ensure that your senior is working as hard as possible to finish strong!!
If your senior currently has an E in one or more of their classes, you will be receiving a separate email from me.
Attendance
Attendance continues to be a focus of administration and staff, so please make sure you are attending school regularly and on time. If you have major health or medical issues that are prohibiting your senior from attending, please make sure you communicate so we can acquire documentation so that those absences do not count against your totals in our attendance policy. Regular attendance is a proven way to keep students on the right path with their academics and studies.
If your senior has more than 9 absences in a particular class, you will be receiving a separate email from me.
MVS/Online Classes
If your senior is enrolled in online classes, please make sure that this class does not fall off of their radar as we near the midpoint of the semester.
If your senior is not on track in their progress or failing an online class, you will receive a separate email from me.
Senior Exam Opt Out
Seniors have the OPPORTUNITY to earn exemption from their second semester exams. Here are the parameters:
- Each class has the possibility for exemption
- In order to be exempt from an exam in a particular class, seniors must meet the following criteria:
- Post a B+ or better with 3 or less tardies AND absences in that class
- Post a B or better with 2 or less tardies AND absences in that class
- If you have any additional questions on this policy or individual questions or concerns, please email me!
- The ONLY absences that are not counted in this are those with an official medical note, court date, college visits, school business, or family funeral.
Behavior and Graduation
Effective today and going forward, any behavioral issue that is considered major and warrants corresponding disciplinary action will jeopardize the senior’s ability to attend graduation and events. Examples of this would be possession or use of controlled substances at school or at school events, physical fights or assault, etc. While this is not an exhaustive list, I want to be very clear that we are keeping a high expectation of behavior for our seniors as we move closer and closer to graduation.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership with this and if you have any questions, please let me know.

Madison Wegener Scholarship Opportunity
Are you a student who has faced significant adversity and used that experience to fuel your future? We want to hear your story.
The Madison E. Wegener Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of a former BHS student who met her life-threatening illness and physical limitations with a smile, a sense of humor, and an unshakable resolve to help others. She recognized the importance of living life to the fullest, and she did not allow the challenges that she faced define her as a person.
We are seeking applicants who embody Madison’s spirit of resilience and purpose. This year, two $3000 dollar scholarships are available to BHS seniors planning to attend an accredited two or four-year college, technical school, or university in the upcoming fall. Scan the QR code in your school email for more information.
Senior Class Council Scholarship Opportunity
Seniors: Your class council is excited to award three $500 scholarships to deserving BHS seniors. Use the link in the announcement email for information on how to apply. Applications are due no later than Friday, May 1.
Updated Senior Class Meeting Schedule - Save the Date!
Due to our spring standardized testing schedule, this year's Senior Class Meeting date needs to be adjusted. Our Spring Senior Class Meeting will now be held on Wednesday, April 22nd during Advisory. This meeting is required, so all Seniors need to plan to be in attendance. If they will not be able to attend for any reason, they should contact Mr. Grabowski directly for approval.
Class of 2026 Remind Codes - Students Only
In addition to our various social media accounts, one of the ways in which we share important information with the Senior class is through the use of the Remind App. We will share the same information with parents via weekly emails, however, students seem to do a better job receiving the information through Remind. Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to join the correct Remind group using the join codes below (alphabetical by last name):

Scranton Middle School Presents Beetlejuice Jr. - April 24–26, 2026
It’s showtime! Scranton Middle School Musical Theatre invites audiences to step into the strange and unusual world of Beetlejuice Jr., the wildly entertaining musical based on the Broadway hit and the beloved Tim Burton film, with four performances April 24–26, 2026, at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts.
Beetlejuice Jr. tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a bright and unusual teenager fascinated with the whole “being dead thing.” When Lydia meets a recently deceased couple and a mischievous demon named Beetlejuice, chaos and hilarity quickly follow. Filled with energetic musical numbers, outrageous humor, and a delightfully spooky story, the production promises a fun and unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.
More than 60 Scranton Middle School students are involved in bringing this production to life, both on stage and behind the scenes. Students have spent months rehearsing, learning choreography, designing sets, and preparing costumes as part of the school’s growing musical theatre program.
Tickets — $16 each — are available for the following performances at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts:

Upcoming Dale Carnegie Teen Program
Please see the information below about an opportunity for teens from the Dale Carnegie Foundation:
As your teen continues to grow into adulthood, the skills they develop now will shape their confidence, relationships, and future opportunities. Academic knowledge is important, but so much of a young person’s success depends on their ability to communicate clearly, collaborate with others, and navigate challenges with resilience. That’s why I’d like to share an opportunity that can make a meaningful difference in your teen’s life: the Dale Carnegie Teen Program.
This course has helped generations of young people strengthen the very skills that set them apart in school, college, and early careers. Teens learn how to speak confidently in front of others, manage stress and worry, build stronger relationships, and take initiative in leadership situations. These are not abstract lessons—they’re practical tools your teen will use immediately, whether in the classroom, on a team, or in everyday interactions.
What makes the program especially impactful is its supportive, hands-on environment. Teens aren’t lectured at; they participate, practice, and grow alongside peers who are working toward the same goals. Many parents say they see noticeable changes in their teen’s confidence and maturity in just a few weeks.
If you know of a teen who could benefit from stronger communication skills, greater self-assurance, or a boost in leadership potential, this course is a powerful investment in their future. It gives them something school often doesn’t: a safe space to discover their voice and learn how to use it.
Please reach out for the informational flyer or pass thisinformation along to someone who could benefit from this! The enrollment form can be found here.
Harmful Online Game Potentially Negatively Impacting Students
Please see the message below from LACASA regarding an online game that is potentially negatively impacting young people who come in contact with it:
As we mark National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we are writing to bring your attention to a troubling trend emerging among students nationwide involving an online video game referred to as
“Five Nights at Epstein’s.”
Based on the popular video game “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” this game is deeply concerning. As players pretend to be sexual assault victims trapped on the convicted predator’s island, it draws on
themes of sexual abuse and trafficking in a way that trivializes and sensationalizes the experiences of hundreds of actual victims, including children. By framing these realities as entertainment, it risks desensitizing young people to the seriousness of exploitation and further dehumanizing those who have suffered.
As this content circulates through online platforms and peer networks, we encourage you and your teams to remain vigilant. Awareness is key, not only in recognizing when students may be engaging with or referencing this game and others like it, but also in addressing its implications. These situations can serve as important opportunities to reinforce values of respect, empathy, and an understanding of the real-world impact of abuse and exploitation.
What to Watch For:
· Students referencing the game by name or discussing its content casually or humorously
· Jokes, memes, or language that minimize or mock victims of abuse or trafficking
· Increased use of inappropriate or sexualized humor tied to real-world individuals or events
· Students showing or sharing gameplay, videos, or related content on devices
How to Respond:
· Address the behavior promptly and calmly, making clear why the content is harmful
· Redirect conversations toward respect, empathy, and the real impact of abuse and exploitation
· Avoid amplifying the game itself, while still setting firm expectations around appropriate conduct
· Engage school counselors or support staff when needed, especially if students appear distressed or impacted
· Communicate with families when appropriate to ensure awareness and reinforce consistent messaging
We also recognize that many educators and families may feel uncertain about how to approach conversations like this. LACASA is here to help. Our team can provide:
· Age-appropriate educational resources for students
· Guidance for educators on navigating sensitive discussions
· Support for families addressing these topics at home
· Training for staff on recognizing and responding to issues related to abuse and exploitation
You can learn more about this troubling trend by clicking here.
