Joint Message to WPS and BPS
A Message from Supt. Rob Wargo and Supt. Jim Lee - 2/14/2022
Dear Weymouth Public Schools’ Community,
At this weekend's boys hockey game between Braintree and Weymouth, there was an unfortunate and unnecessary altercation involving fans from both schools. Officers from the Weymouth Police Department responded to the incident and are investigating.
As the Superintendents of each community, we are writing in unity to strongly remind both communities that violent acts, assaults, and/or bullying will not be tolerated in the Weymouth Public School or the Braintree Public School districts. Whether in the classroom, school buildings, on the rink, or in the stands, we are committed to the safety of our students, athletes, staff, and school community. The decision of a small group of students to resort to violence and to jeopardize the safety of others attending the game is unacceptable. All of our fans' focus should be on the student-athletes who have trained diligently to compete against one another with pride for their school and with sportsmanship. Those who choose to engage in violent activities will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and the policies of each school.
We would like to thank the officers who responded to the scene, the students who stepped up in an effort to stop the senseless behavior, as well as the Weymouth Public Schools staff who were on site and quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation and help restore safety.
Both schools are continuing their investigation into this incident. Anyone with information related to Saturday’s incident should contact the Weymouth Police Department. Any student, from either district, who is in need of support is encouraged to contact their school adjustment counselor.
At both Weymouth and Braintree High Schools, we are committed to ensuring that such behaviors are not repeated, and that we compete against our neighbors with the respect both communities deserve.
Respectfully,
Robert Wargo
