Capturing Kids Hearts National Showcase School
Last year, McPherson Public Schools earned national recognition as a 2024-2025 Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools® District—a celebration of the connection, compassion, and community happening in our schools every day. Several of our schools also received individual honors: Eisenhower, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Washington, and McPherson Middle School.
This recognition reflects the core of the work of our staff —building a culture where every student is known, supported, and ready to thrive. Let’s keep the momentum going this year and continue living the CKH mindset in every classroom and hallway!
CO Sightings
Dr. Vanderhoof at RES
Dr. Lara Vanderhoof was the mystery reader and came to visit Mrs. Balencia & Mrs. Singleton’s 3rd grade classes. The students loved her animation and captivating way to engage our kiddos! Thank you so very much for visiting Roosevelt!

Board Meeting Summary
September 15, 2025
At its regular meeting Monday evening, the USD 418 Board of Education unanimously approved the next steps to protect and restore the McPherson High School Roundhouse.
The Board voted 5-0 to move forward with enhancements to the detention pond system and to replace the Roundhouse gym floor, as outlined in the existing agreement with Lankford Enterprises. The next phase of the project, concrete work in the Roundhouse, will begin soon.
To minimize disruptions and help resume school and community activities sooner, the Board also authorized district administration to explore a temporary court option. This short-term solution could provide a stop-gap until the permanent floor installation is complete.
“Our priority is getting students back in the Roundhouse,” said Superintendent Dr. Shiloh Vincent. “It’s more than just a gym; it’s where our students learn, compete, perform, and come together for the big moments that define their high school experience. The Board wants to balance making the long-term changes needed to protect the Roundhouse with finding ways for students to return to their activities as soon as possible.”
The Roundhouse has remained dry during recent rains thanks to short-term measures already in place, and the detention pond improvements will provide added protection for the future.
The district will continue to share updates with the community as work progresses.
USD 418 Facilities Master Planning Committee
Meeting 1
The USD 418 Facilities Master Planning Committee met for its first meeting on September 18, 2025 at the McPherson Community Building. We are glad that we had such an extensive and diverse turnout, and we are grateful for the thoughtful input the group brought to the conversation.
During the first meeting, Mr. Duane Cash, Studio Director with incite Design Studio, the district's architectural partner, shared a summary of key information that will inform our work. Below you will find two documents that will help inform this work:
- An enrollment and capacity study from RSP
- A full facility assessment report from iDS
This group will continue to meet this fall and, in partnership with the Board of Education, determine the future plans for facilities across MPS.
Dr. Vincent shares with the group.
Meeting 2
The group met for its second meeting on Tuesday, September 23, at McPherson High School. During this meeting, the group reviewed the key items that came as focus areas from the initial discussion.
There are 7 key topics that emerged from the feedback:
1. Safety & Security
- “Secure entrances” was one of the single most repeated phrases across multiple questions.
- Safety/security showed up in multiple questions as the top-ranked need.
- Includes ADA accessibility, secure entries, lighting, safe spectator areas.
2. Maintenance & Infrastructure
- HVAC, roofs, plumbing, electrical, and flooring were cited repeatedly
- People are frustrated with inconsistent temperatures, outdated restrooms, and flooring issues.
3. Modern Educational Spaces & Classrooms
- Strong call for collaborative/breakout spaces, STEM/CTE labs, flexible learning environments.
- Technology and 21st-century readiness came up repeatedly, especially in Q5 (high school).
4. Elementary Schools / Consolidation
- Declining enrollment + too many buildings = clear pressure to reduce the number of elementaries.
- Many responses suggest closing one or more schools, balancing class sizes, and repurposing buildings.
5. New Secondary Schools (Middle/High)
- “New high school” (30 mentions in Q2) and “new middle school” (29 mentions) dominated the unlimited-resources conversation.
- In limited-resource scenarios (Q3), people still pressed for secondary investment — showing it’s a long-standing pain point.
6. Consolidation & Efficiency
- At the system level, people want to reduce redundancy: centralize support facilities, move out of rented/admin space, and consolidate programs.
- This theme overlaps with elementary reduction but extends to admin, bus barn, and other non-instructional facilities.
7. Equity Across Schools
- Many participants emphasized fairness – ensuring all buildings are brought up to a baseline standard.
- Equity matters even if new construction happens elsewhere.
- This sentiment appeared across multiple questions.
The group began to look at what long-range plans might look like to address these focus areas at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
A community survey will be distributed soon to gather broader feedback on the planning options.
The group issubmitting responses into an online tool the presenters used to collect audience input (via their cell phones).
