Thank You RamFam! Thank You RamFam!

Dear West Hempstead UFSD Team,

As we wrap up another incredible school year, we want to take a moment to say—thank you.

Each of you has played a vital role in making this year a success. Whether in the classroom, the cafeteria, the nurse's office, behind a desk, or behind the scenes, your dedication has made a real difference in the lives of our students and families.

To our teachers and classroom staff—your creativity, resilience, and care have helped our students learn, grow, and thrive. You've adapted, inspired, and continued to push forward, no matter the challenge. Thank you for always putting students first.

To our teaching assistants and paraprofessionals, your support, patience, and connection with students provide that extra layer of encouragement that truly transforms a classroom.

To our support staff, you are the heartbeat of our schools. You keep everything moving, running, and safe from transportation to tech, maintenance to meals, front offices to security posts. Your work might not always be in the spotlight, but we see it and value it deeply.

To our administrative assistants, your calm presence, organization, and multitasking superpowers keep our buildings humming. You warmly greet our families and ensure the little details are handled.

To our administrators, your leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence guide our schools forward. You balance countless priorities while keeping student success at the center of every decision, and your dedication to fostering a positive culture makes all the difference.

To our custodians, maintenance crews, and grounds staff—thank you for showing up early, staying late, and always keeping our spaces clean, safe, and ready for learning.

To our tech team, thank you for being our behind-the-scenes troubleshooters and innovation enablers. Your work allows us to bring the world into our classrooms and keep learning on track.

To our cafeteria teams, you do more than serve meals. With every tray, you serve care, comfort, and kindness, keeping our students fueled and ready to learn.

To our nurses, your steady hands and compassionate hearts care for our students' physical and emotional well-being. You've been a lifeline for so many.

To our security staff, your vigilance and calm presence create safe spaces where learning can happen. Thank you for always keeping watch.

To our transportation staff, thank you for the warm welcome in the morning and the safe return home in the afternoon. You set the tone for so many students' days.

And to every other team member across the district, whether you work in personnel, finance, curriculum, data, or elsewhere, your contributions make West Hempstead's mission possible. You keep us focused, organized, and moving forward.

We also want to recognize our incredible students, who bring joy, curiosity, and purpose to everything we do—without them, none of our work would exist or matter. And to our parents and caregivers, your partnership, trust, and support make our shared mission of nurturing young minds possible.

We're equally grateful for our community partners, whose collaboration and support enrich all students' experiences and strengthen our entire community.

We know this work isn't easy. It demands energy, flexibility, and heart—and you continue to bring all three. Your efforts shape futures, and your care doesn't go unnoticed.

We are proud to work alongside you. You make West Hempstead UFSD a community of support, growth, and purpose. We wish you a well-deserved summer break and look forward to what we'll build together next year.

With appreciation,

Dina, Brian, and Dan

Spreading Kindness: The Power of the Kindness Chain Initiative at CA! Spreading Kindness: The Power of the Kindness Chain Initiative at CA!

The Cornwell Avenue community has embraced the transformative power of kindness through our Kindness Chain project, bringing students and staff together in a meaningful celebration of empathy and connection.

How It Works

Each participant decorates a paper strip representing either a kind act they've performed or one they plan to do. These individual strips are then linked together, creating an ever-growing chain that serves as a tangible reminder of how kindness spreads throughout our community.

The Impact

This simple yet powerful initiative demonstrates how individual acts of compassion—no matter how small—create lasting ripples of positivity. As students and staff add their strips, they're not just participating in an activity but making a visible commitment to building a more caring environment for everyone.

The growing chain has become more than decoration in our classrooms—it's a daily reminder that we're all connected through our shared commitment to kindness. Each colorful link represents someone's dedication to making a positive difference.

A Beautiful Milestone

This event marked a special celebration as we connected all our classroom chains, creating one magnificent display that stretched around our entire building! Seeing our collective kindness encircle our school was a powerful moment, highlighting how much compassion exists within our community.

The Kindness Chain continues to grow, reminding us daily that every act of kindness matters and that we're building something beautiful together—one thoughtful gesture at a time.

George Washington Moving Up Ceremony George Washington Moving Up Ceremony

There's something magical about watching students cross the threshold from one chapter of their education to the next. At George Washington Intermediate School's annual Moving Up Ceremony, that magic filled every corner of the beautifully decorated auditorium as families witnessed their young scholars take this significant step forward.

Against golden curtains that seemed to shimmer with possibility, each student's personality burst forth through vibrant, hand-crafted name displays—a rainbow of creativity that told the story of who these children are becoming. From bold graffiti-style lettering to delicate artistic touches, every piece reflected the unique spirit of its creator.

As proud parents dabbed at their eyes and grandparents beamed from the audience, Ms. Milliner shared heartfelt words about the remarkable growth she'd witnessed in these students. The gentle melodies from Mr. Heckler's piano seemed to underscore the bitter-sweetness of the moment, celebrating how far these children have come while acknowledging they're ready to spread their wings even wider.

The black, white, and gold balloons floating overhead weren't just decorations but symbols of dreams taking flight. This wasn't simply a ceremony—it was a love letter to childhood's end and adolescence's beginning, honoring the incredible journey these students have traveled and the bright futures that await them in secondary school.

For every family present, this day marked not just academic achievement, but a beautiful reminder of how quickly our children grow and how proud we are to watch them soar.

#WHe #WHe

zoom_out_map

With "WHe" as our theme this year, #WHe are inspired to explore, discover, and achieve future wonders. Allow me to share some of the ways one could envision completing the idea of "WHe" throughout this remarkable journey:

  • Wonder and Curiosity: Let us ignite a spark of wonder and curiosity in every aspect of our learning. Encouraging students and staff alike to question, explore, and seek knowledge beyond the ordinary.
  • “WH”olistic Education: Emphasizing the growth of the whole individual – social, emotional, and academic. We aim to provide opportunities for personal development and well-being in addition to academic excellence.
  • Empathy and Humanity: "WHe" stands for "We" as well, reminding us of our collective responsibility to foster empathy, compassion, and kindness. We will create a supportive and inclusive community where everyone feels valued.
  • Waves of Change: As a theme, "WHe" also signifies the ever-changing tides of life. We will adapt to new challenges, embrace innovation, and be resilient in the face of uncertainty.
  • Expressions of Art and Culture: "WHe" encompasses the essence of artistic and cultural expressions. We will celebrate creativity, appreciate diversity, and nurture talents in various forms.
  • Wellness and Health: Prioritizing physical and mental health, creating a safe and nurturing environment where everyone can thrive and grow.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: "WHe" represents collective wisdom and the power of collaboration. We will empower our students to be leaders in their own right while fostering teamwork and cooperation.

Our Collective Challenge for 24-25 Our Collective Challenge for 24-25

zoom_out_map

As #WHe embark on a new academic year, our district introduced three interconnected challenges that will shape our approach to education and personal growth. Under the banner of "WHe Over Me," "Stack the Days," and "The Obstacle is the Way," we're called to embrace collaboration, consistency, and resilience. These principles will guide us in fostering a supportive community, achieving sustainable progress, and transforming obstacles into opportunities. By focusing on these collective challenges, #WHe aim to create an environment where educators and students alike can thrive, learn, and grow together.

WHe Over Me

Commitment: Prioritize the "we" over the "me." Our strength lies in our collective efforts. Let’s work together to create an environment where collaboration, teamwork, and mutual support are at the forefront. Whether it’s through Professional Learning Communities, cross-department collaboration, or simply supporting one another in daily tasks, remember that our combined efforts will lead to greater student success.

Stack the Days

Consistency: Success isn’t built in a day; it’s built by stacking one good day on top of another. This year, focus on making each day count. Whether in lesson planning, student interactions, or professional development, let’s commit to consistent, daily progress. It’s the small, incremental gains that will lead to significant long-term achievements for our students and ourselves.

The Obstacle is the Way

Resilience: Every challenge we face is an opportunity in disguise. When obstacles arise—and they will—let’s face them head-on, knowing that overcoming these challenges will make us stronger and more effective educators. Embrace problems as pathways to growth, and let’s model this resilience for our students.

The Designing Learning framework is an educational approach #WHe uses to engage students and close the aspiration gap. The framework encompasses several key principles aimed at enhancing the learning experience for students and staff:

The Designing Learning framework consists of: Connection Before Content, Acceleration not Remediation, Rethinking Success Criteria, Higher-Level Thinking, Student Agency, Authentic Work, and Technology Infusion.

1. Connection Before Content: This principle emphasizes building strong relationships and belonging in the classroom. It recognizes that when students feel connected to their teachers and peers, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated to learn.

2. Acceleration, not Remediation: Rather than focusing solely on addressing deficits in students' knowledge or skills, this framework aspect promotes challenging students with content and tasks that allow them to excel and progress rapidly. It recognizes that students can achieve more when they are appropriately challenged.

3. Rethinking Success Criteria: This principle encourages educators to reconsider traditional notions of success and assessment. It involves clearly defining success in a given context and allowing for varied ways for students to demonstrate their understanding and mastery.

4. Higher-Level Thinking: The framework promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity among students. It encourages educators to design learning experiences that push students to engage in deeper levels of thinking and analysis.

5. Student Agency: Empowering students to actively participate in their learning is a fundamental aspect of the framework. It encourages students to set goals, make choices, and take ownership of their educational journey, fostering a sense of autonomy and responsibility.

6. Authentic Work: This principle advocates real-world relevance in educational activities. It suggests that students should work on tasks and projects that have meaning and application beyond the classroom, making learning more engaging and practical.

7. Technology Infusion: Recognizing the role of technology in the modern world, this aspect of the framework encourages the thoughtful integration of technology into the learning process. It aims to leverage technology to enhance and expand educational opportunities.

Habits of Mind Habits of Mind

By Art Costa, Bena Kallick, and Allison Zmuda

There is a growing recognition that mastering subject-area knowledge alone will not be sufficient to prepare your children for their futures. They will need deliberate practice and focused attention to grow their capacity as efficacious thinkers to navigate and thrive in the face of unprecedented change. Habits of Mind are a universal framework for thinking and are as essential now as when we first introduced them 30 years ago. Habits of Mind are dispositions people use when confronted with problems and situations to which answers are not immediately apparent. When we draw upon these intellectual resources, the results that are produced are more powerful, of higher quality and of greater significance than if we fail to employ those intellectual behaviors.

The single most effective habit is the willingness to change your own mind. The single most effective habit is the willingness to change your own mind.

CHESTNUT STREET SCHOOL, DISTRICT #27

From little acorns, mighty oaks grow.

From a four-room schoolhouse known as the Chestnut Street School, which served 86 children, District #27 has grown over the decades.

Around the turn of the century, the children of West Hempstead and Franklin Square shared a one-room school.

This was located at the junction of Nassau Boulevard and Dogwood Avenue. In 1911, the 29 families living in West Hempstead considered the need for a school for their children.

To receive state aid, Union Free School District #27 was formed in 1912. It covered 1650 acres, and the schoolhouse was to be built as near to the center of the District as possible. The site chosen for the school was Lot 6 and 8 Block 1, Hempstead Gardens Map. It was purchased for $3500. This was the start of the Chestnut Street School.

While the construction of the school building was going on, school was conducted in temporary quarters in a house on Ted Duryea's property on Woodfield Road. District #27 borrowed desks, seats, and blackboards from the Hempstead School District to conduct classes.

The members of the Board of Education for the year 1912 were Mr. P. Ohrtman, Mr. H.W. Rickmeyer, Mr. E. Losee, and Mr. W. Brenneke. The principal was Miss Mary A. Davern; the two teachers were Misses Elizabeth Van Vlick and Edith Slocum.

Toward the end of 1912, the school building was almost completed. It was now time to purchase some of the necessary supplies. The purchase orders read - 12 Arithmetics, 2 boxes of dustless crayons, and 3 Dictionaries, not to exceed $1.50 each. Another matter needed attention. An advertisement in a Hempstead newspaper stated that the School District had for sale "FRUIT TREES AND GRAPE VINES" on the Chestnut Street School site. There was only one bidder. The outcome was never mentioned.

In January 1913, the new four-room school building was completed. Miss Davern was given the assignment of arranging the classrooms. The "Intermediate" class was in the East Room, and the "Primary" was in the West Room on the lower floor. Miss Davern occupied the upper East Room; it is assumed that she taught the older pupils. The West Room was left vacant for the time being. Sometime early in February 1913, the students moved from the temporary schoolhouse to the Chestnut Street School.

Coal was used to heat the building. It was purchased for $4.50 a ton for pea coal and $6.50 a ton for furnace coal.

Hat tip to the Historical Society and Ms. McAvoy for sharing this information.
