Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - October 26, 2026
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
October has treated us to some beautiful fall weather, but the cooler evenings are a reminder that November is just around the corner! With Halloween coming up on Saturday, Newtown is preparing for one of its most cherished community traditions—trick-or-treating on Main Street. The amount of time, effort, and generosity that goes into this tradition is truly remarkable, and I know our families appreciate all that our Main Street neighbors do to make the evening so special.
For those who would like to help, candy and monetary donations can be dropped off at Newtown Parks and Recreation or Trinity Episcopal Church. Families can also bring extra candy to share with residents along the route. As always, I encourage everyone to be especially mindful when driving on Halloween evening. With so many children walking throughout town, a little extra patience and attention behind the wheel can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.
At last week's Board of Education meeting, our elementary and Reed Intermediate School principals shared their school-based goals for the 2026–2027 school year. These presentations are an important part of our district's ongoing strategic planning process, connecting the broader priorities outlined in our 2025–2028 Strategic Goals to the work taking place in our schools each day. Ultimately, what happens in our classrooms is what matters most. Our school-based goals reflect a thoughtful examination of student needs, academic performance, the learning environment, and opportunities for continued growth. They also help ensure that, despite the many competing demands of running a school district, we remain focused on our most important responsibility - providing every student with a high-quality educational experience. I encourage you to take a few minutes to review the goals presented by our principals so far. They offer a window into the priorities guiding the work in each of our schools this year.
Reed Intermediate Strategic Goals
At next Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, our Newtown Middle School and Newtown High School principals will present their goals. Our Director of Teaching and Learning and Director of Pupil Services will follow on November 17, rounding out this year's presentations and providing a comprehensive look at how our district priorities are being translated into meaningful action across our schools.
Finally, as much as I enjoy the beautiful colors and crisp air of fall, there is one part of the season I could happily do without - these increasingly early sunsets! Daylight Saving Time comes to an end this Sunday, which means we'll gain an extra hour of sleep but lose an hour of daylight in the evening. I have never been particularly enthusiastic about both leaving for work and heading home in the dark, so I'll be looking forward to that day in early February, when the sun finally begins setting after 5:00 p.m. again.
In the meantime, I hope everyone enjoys a safe and happy Halloween and takes a moment to appreciate the wonderful community traditions that make Newtown such a special place.
Warm regards,
Anne

Student Highlights
Growing Together at SHS 🌱
SHS students have been hard at work nurturing their school garden since last spring! From preparing the soil and planting to weeding and watering, students have played an important role in bringing the garden to life. In the spring, they enjoyed tomatoes and snap peas, and now, in September and October, the garden is flourishing with sunflowers and pumpkins!
A special shoutout to Angel Borjorguez, who researched what was damaging the sunflower leaves and helped identify a solution, allowing the plants to grow healthy and strong.
We love seeing our students learn, problem-solve, and grow together through hands-on experiences!
Hope Squad Retreat: Ready for a Great Year!
Our NHS and NMS Hope Squad members came together for their annual Hope Squad Retreat! Students participated in training and collaborated to plan activities for the school year ahead. Handcrafted Makes Its Debut at NHS!
The initiative was largely funded by a Perkins federal Career and Technical Education grant, alongside the culinary departments' budget and generous contributions from local business owners and industry experts. While operations will continue to be fine-tuned in the coming months, this soft launch marks an exciting milestone for our hands-on CTE programming.
Green vs Blue - Reed's Color Games Week 💚💙
Reed Intermediate’s annual Color Games was a success! This week-long event encourages students to participate in classroom challenges and activities, earning points for their hands-on work and written responses. The goal is for each homeroom to work together, encourage participation, build team spirit, and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
After the 6th graders grand finale on Friday evening, Blue house earned an additional 9,575 points and Green house earned an additional 10,992 points. With these additional points the grand total for Blue House at the end of the week was 20,987 points!! Green House's final point total was 21,710 points! Congratulations to both houses on a fun week of school spirit!

On October 22nd, the Newtown High School Athletic Department hosted a free cardiac screening (sponsored by In A Heart Beat) for all of the Newtown Public School students. 114 K-12 students were screened. October is Sudden Cardiac Death Awareness month. This is the leading cause of death for high school student-athletes.
A huge thank you to Mike Papale of In A Heart Beat and all of the volunteers from Quinnipiac University who administered the EKGs. Thank you to Matt Memoli, Kim Longobucco, the NHS faculty, coaches and custodians for helping make this event a success!

Meal Charging & MySchoolBucks
At Newtown Public Schools, we want every student to have access to a nutritious meal each school day. In accordance with our Board-approved Meal Charging Policy, students will not be denied a meal because of an outstanding meal account balance.
Families are encouraged to regularly monitor and maintain their child’s meal account. MySchoolBucks provides a convenient and secure way to manage school meal purchases from anywhere.
Through the website or mobile app, families can:
- Add money to a student’s meal account
- Set up automatic payments
- Check account balances and review purchase history
- Receive notifications when an account balance is low
If you haven’t already, we encourage families to create a MySchoolBucks account at www.myschoolbucks.com or download the mobile app. Keeping track of your child’s account and maintaining a positive balance helps make mealtimes simple and seamless.
For additional information about the district’s Meal Charging Policy, please visit the Newtown Public Schools website or contact your child’s school.
Get Involved, Be Connected, Have a Voice - Join a Newtown PTA!
Our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) is a group made up of parents, teachers, and sometimes community members who work together to support our schools. The primary goal of our PTAs is to build a strong connection between families and schools to create a positive learning environment for students. PTAs often organize activities and events that benefit students, such as fundraisers, family nights, and volunteer programs. These events help raise money for classroom supplies, field trips, or other school needs that may not be covered by the school budget.
In addition to fundraising, the PTA acts as a bridge between parents and school administrations. They advocate for students by addressing concerns or providing feedback to school leaders. PTAs also host meetings, or informational sessions to keep parents informed about important issues, such as curriculum changes, testing schedules, or educational policies. By fostering collaboration among parents, teachers, and administrators, our PTAs plays a crucial role in enriching the school community and supporting student success.
