Attendance
We wanted to take a moment to emphasize the crucial role that regular school attendance plays in your child's education and overall development, especially in light of the specific definition of "chronic absenteeism" according to the state of Illinois.
The state of Illinois defines "chronic absenteeism" as missing 10 percent or more school days within an academic year, with or without a valid excuse. This definition underscores the significance of ensuring your child's regular presence at school, as extended absences can have lasting consequences for their education.
Here are some additional reasons to prioritize regular attendance:
- 1. Learning Opportunities: Consistent attendance allows your child to engage fully in the learning process, ensuring they don't miss out on important lessons, discussions, and hands-on experiences that are essential for their academic growth.
- 2. Building Relationships: Regular attendance helps your child build relationships with teachers, peers, and other school staff. These connections can be valuable for their social and emotional development.
- 3. School Designation: One of the many factors the state uses when evaluating school and assigning them a designation includes chronic absenteeism. One of the things you can do to help support the school is to ensure your child regularly attends school.
- 4. Academic Success: Studies consistently show a strong link between regular school attendance and academic success. Missing school can lead to gaps in knowledge and skills that can be challenging to overcome.
- 5. Future Opportunities: A good attendance record can have a positive impact on your child's future educational and career opportunities. Many colleges and employers place a high value on a history of punctuality and commitment.
We understand that there may be times when your child needs to miss school due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances. In such cases, please ensure you communicate with the school to provide necessary documentation and stay updated on your child's assignments.
Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child attends school regularly, in compliance with the state of Illinois's definition of chronic absenteeism. Your involvement in their education is invaluable, and together, we can help them achieve their full potential.
Health Updates
As we progress further into the fall, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some important health updates:
As a district and as a county, there has been a noted increase in cases of pertussis (whooping cough); please see the document linked HERE for more information about symptoms and health department recommendations.
While we have significantly reduced communication regarding COVID cases this school year, there are unique circumstances in which you may receive information about a cluster of COVID cases in your child’s class/program; for reference, the threshold recommended by the Lake County Health Department is 20% of a population for stakeholder notification.
As always, please continue to monitor your student’s health, and to reach out to the school nurse with any questions you may have.

Student of the Month - September
Each month, District 95 asks every building to select a student who represents our District Values of collaboration, continuous improvement, equity, high expectations, integrity, perseverance, and respect. For the month of September, Spencer Loomis chose Second Grader, Alexander T.
The Second Grade Team enthusiastically nominates Alexander T. for Student of the Month. In the few short weeks of our 2023-2024 school year, Alexander has shown to be a wonderful representation of District 95's values of respect, collaboration, and perseverance. This is especially shown as Alexander greets his peers and adults in the building each morning with a huge smile on his face, continuously encourages classmates to follow classroom and school-wide expectations, and has already shown interest in taking a hands-on approach to his learning. Alexander exemplifies District 95's goal-oriented mindset philosophy of sharing his interest in space, building rocket ships, and wanting to become an astronaut in his future! We are so proud of Alexander and excited that he can be recognized for making a positive impact within our school community.
Student of the Month - October
Each month, District 95 asks every building to select a student who represents our District Values of collaboration, continuous improvement, equity, high expectations, integrity, perseverance, and respect. For the month of October, Spencer Loomis chose Fifth Grader, Jaxon S.
The Spencer Loomis Art, Band, General Music, LIH, Orchestra , and P.E. teachers are thrilled to select Jaxon S. as our Student of the Month. As specials teachers, we have had the privilege of watching Jaxon grow and develop his skills over the past several years. He is a conscientious, respectful, and responsible student, and he is always excited to learn. Each day, he arrives to our classes with a huge smile and an eagerness to know what we will be working on in class. He asks thoughtful questions and frequently shares his great ideas. He perseveres through challenging components of our lessons and curriculum. Jaxon brings a wonderful energy to our classrooms and our entire school. We are so proud of you, Jaxon. Congratulations!
Parent Volunteers of the Month
Once each year, District 95 asks every building to select parent volunteers who represent our District Values of collaboration, continuous improvement, equity, high expectations, integrity, perseverance, and respect. For the month of October, Spencer Loomis had the privilege of honoring Monica Mery and Marko Zaro.
Spencer Loomis would like to recognize Monica Mery and Marko Zaro as our parent volunteers of the month for October. Their family has been a part of the Spencer Loomis community for many years. In the past few years, Marko and Monica have spent countless hours making our building beautiful by creating spectacular bulletin boards. In addition, they created our school mascot from hundreds of tissue paper pieces, which we proudly display in our main office. Thank you Marko and Monica for all of the time and effort you have put into beautifying our building. All of our students, parents, and staff greatly appreciate everything you do for us. You are truly deserving of the volunteer of the month award for your dedication to the Spencer Loomis Community! Congrats!
