Wildwood Elementary
May 22, 2020
Dear Wildwood Families,
As we conclude another week of Remote Learning, I wanted to share that our Wildwood family is continuing to increase scholar engagement in their learning. Overall, we increased by 10% last week! Way to go, Wildcats!
As the end of the school year approaches we want to make sure to stay focused and continue to engage in the online lessons, Class Zoom meetings, and independent reading. Staying engaged will help set up your scholar for success in the fall. Please maximize the time we are still here to support ALL scholars with reaching their maximum potential to achieve their brightest future.
Thank you for your continued support at home; as always, please let us know how we can support you and your scholar(s).
If I can help in anyway or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
In partnership,
Sarah Jackson

Message From the Counselor!
Hello Wildwood Wildcats!
Hello Wildcats this is Ms. Davis again and I am here to help you make the most of your new learning space at home. While you are at home completing school assignments you might notice others in your home busy with household chores, cooking or taking care of younger siblings. This is completely normal but it might make you feel distracted. When we are distracted it means we lose our focus on the task at hand. In this case it would mean not being able to finish school work because others around you are doing something else or making noises. I want to remind you to practice using your “skills for learning” this week to “Focus your attention” with ear buds or other tools, find a different space and “ignore distractions”. It’s also important to be “assertive” and ask parents to help you get online for learning as well as choose the best days and times to work quietly on school work. Please don’t forget to “listen” to the needs of others in your home. One way to do this is by Sharing and Taking Turns! Keep up the practice of using your Kelso’s Choices.
What does PAWS look like at home this week? We are all learning how to be in school, at home. How are you doing with your Zoom meetings and checking your teacher’s Website?
Which brings me to PAWS
Our second Letter in our PAWS is “A”
A is the letter of today which stands For:
Alway Make Good Decisions: Plan to eliminate any distractions that might interfere with your ability to focus during your online learning. Did you know that all of the new ways you are learning to work differently is allowing your brain to grow in new ways. The brain can and does change based on our experiences. So your brain is developing new pathways of learning as you shift to being educated in an online setting over an extended period time. Your brain is actually training itself to accommodate your needs to be a successful online learner. We call your ability to practice this new way of being educated a growth mindset. My brain is also making changes for me as well because now my brain is helping me improve my technology skills. I have a willing heart and a positive attitude and so I see my skills growing, evolving. So let us continue to practice what may be difficult for us as we are making good decisions to “focus our attention”on scheduling a time for school assignments and fun with our families.
Ways to Calm Down: Sometimes even when we try our very best to follow the rules and play fair with others things may still go wrong and you may feel mad at others or be asked to stop the game. Instead of losing control of your emotions be sure to Stop, Name your feeling and Calm down. You can also use your toolbox and breathe deeply, Count to 10 or use Positive Self-Talk for example say “ I can do it, I can Wait and Cool off” It is important that you continue to use your Kelso’s Choices.
A Family Activity - Create a Family Challenge: Each family member writes a goal of something they want to do together this week or this month. Bake cookies together, do an art project as a family or have a live family dance off. Make it fun do whatever works for your family be creative and use your imagination. Don’t forget to have a family meeting to vote on which family challenge to start on first.
Exercise Daily: Stay committed to doing some form of daily exercise that you enjoy! Dancing, riding a bike, walking are all good ways to stay active and healthy as we practice social distancing.
Kelso Choices: Remember when you are home with your family and conflict may arise. It is not only about how you feel. It is also about how they feel, put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Use your Kelso Choices to talk it out with a family member or find a learning space make a deal, share and take turns when small problems show up.
Toolbox: Your toolbox are the supports you have available to you to help you solve problems and work through conflicts.
Question: What is in your toolbox today?
Answer: Today we talked about How to Calm Down: For example Instead of getting mad at others when things don’t go your way Stop, Name your feeling and Calm down by taking big breaths in your nose and blow out through your mouth, Count to 10 or say something positive to yourself self like “I can Wait and Cool off.”
Positive Self- talk: “I am in control of my thoughts and I can say nice things to myself to calm my body down when I am upset. I have people in my life that care about my feelings and I matter to all of them!
My final message to you: You are apart of a big Wildwood community and we care about you. Just remember we are thinking of you and finding ways to make learning fun for you everyday
Stay Happy, calm and healthy,
Ms.Davis
