This Week at Brookside...

Westwood Regional School District has partnered with the national nonprofit, YouthTruth, to help us hear feedback from our parents, staff, and students about what we are doing well, and how we can improve.

From January 21 to January 31, 2020, the YouthTruth Family survey will be open and we want to hear from you! Once the survey is open, we will send out an email with the link to the survey and any additional details. The survey takes about 15 minutes and your anonymous response will be combined with responses from other parents/guardians throughout the district.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MANDATED PROGRAMMING, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST IN WRITING TO MR.CONROY, PRINCIPAL.

The next Special Education Parent Advisory Council meeting will be held on January 23, 2020, at 6:30 PM in the conference room within the Department of Special Services. All parents are encouraged to attend! Ariana Wiecenski, District Occupational Therapist, will be supported by Jessica Gluck, Assistant Director of Special Services, and Ray Renshaw, Director of Special Services, as she addresses the topic of self-regulation. Furthermore, strategies and resources regarding the Zones of Regulation will be shared during the meeting.

Presentations regarding the upcoming Middle School Transition for September of 2020 will be held on the following days:

• January 29th, Hurley Theater, Jr./Sr. HS, 9:00 - 10:00 AM
• January 29th, WRMS Cafeteria, 6:30-7:30 PM

If you are unable to attend on either date, the presentation will also be shared electronically at the end of the month.

For the third year, Brookside will be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge! Stay tuned for more information to follow.

The district is beginning to see some cases of flu. The CDC recommends a three-step approach to help limit transmission:

1. Get a flu vaccine -- it is not too late!

2. Stop the spread: Wash hands often; avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth; clean frequently touched items; cover coughs and sneezes.

3. Take antiviral medications, if prescribed by your doctor.

**Students should stay home until they are fever-free for a full 24 hours without medication and are able to fully participate in school activities.

If possible, please send in a doctor’s note that includes a diagnosis of flu in order for it to be tracked accurately.

We are finishing our unit on Air and Weather in first grade. Mrs. Bowker's and Ms. Paolella's classes teamed up to build a balloon rocket. Click to see them test it! They finished the unit by going to Northern Highlands Planetarium in Allendale to see Secret of a Cardboard Rocket.

Every February, dentists throughout NJ participate in this one day event and offer free dental care to children 12 years and younger. Give Kids a Smile Day is February 7, 2020. The Westwood Regional School District has opened online Kindergarten registration for the 2020‑2021 school year. This is a pre-registration only; students will not be considered enrolled until parents/guardians submit the required documentation at an in-person registration appointment at a later date.

Be aware that your child must reside in the Borough of Westwood or Township of Washington and be five (5) years old on or before October 1, 2020, to enter Kindergarten next September. For more information, click here.

One of the greatest features of our new mobile app is the ability for you to receive push notifications directly to your phone with important information or reminders from the district and school with important information or reminders. Once configured, you will be notified whenever a message is sent regarding any change in school status due to inclement weather as well as occasional announcements / reminders about school level events.

Follow these steps when downloading the mobile app:

1. Search ‘Westwood Regional Schools, NJ’ in your phone’s app store and download the app

2. Select ‘ALLOW’ when prompted on initial download to ensure you receive notifications

3. Open the Westwood app, and navigate to the left-side menu for ‘SETTINGS’

4. Ensure your settings are turned on and your school(s) and/or the district is selected
