Counselor's Corner
As we enter the holiday season, excitement is in the air—lights go up, traditions begin, and students eagerly count down to winter break. This time of year can be joyful and magical, but it can also come with big emotions for children.
Helping Children Manage Holiday Emotions
The holidays can bring mixed emotions for children. Changes in routines, overstimulation, or family stress may cause them to feel overwhelmed. Here are a few ways to support your child:
-
Keep routines as consistent as possible (bedtime, homework time, screen time).
-
Prepare them for schedule changes by explaining what to expect during the week.
-
Let them express their feelings, even if they don’t seem “holiday cheerful.”
-
Create small moments of calm, like reading together or taking a quiet walk.
Winter Break Tips
To help ease the transition into break:
-
Create a simple daily routine (chores, playtime, reading).
-
Encourage creative activities like drawing, building, or crafting.
-
Balance screen time with fresh air and movement.
-
Keep bedtime routines steady to help with the return to school.
And most of all, take this time to enjoy the holiday season with those you love!
