Kindergarten
As we begin the New Year, just as throughout the first half of the school year, the children are working very hard in all subject areas, recognizing the importance of our Life Skills of perseverance, cooperation, and prayer in all they do, we are very proud of each one of them.
In the Atrium, the boys and girls are growing in their faith and understanding of the love and guidance of the Good Shepherd.
We have excitedly met all the Superkids; this outstanding reading series continues to interest and engage the boys and girls while building strong phonics, handwriting, encoding, and decoding skills as well as spelling and dictation. The boys and girls are so excited to be expressing their own ideas through Creative Writing, as well as, through Jane Schaffer! Our math studies have taken a turn to explore shapes, both 2D and 3D.
As a part of STEM, they were also able to construct their own model cubes with marshmallows and toothpicks! As part of our Social Studies, the students are learning about and have completed reports on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Additionally, for Black History Month, we read about and discussed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his belief in peaceful, non-violent change.
In Science we are very proud of all the students who submitted projects for the Science Fair; we appreciate their efforts and fine work.
Catholic Schools Week was wonderful, as always, full of school spirit! It is an on-going reminder of the blessings and rewards of Catholic Education. The boys and girls fully enjoyed our Holiday Day, Tuesday’s “No Homework Night” was well favored, along with the Ice Cream Sundae sale! We also enjoyed watching the All Catholic School’s Mass. It was blessing to see it live for the first time! We also had so much fun at the Pep Rally that was hosted by Mrs. V on Friday! And, lastly, we truly enjoyed sharing our classroom and the children’s work with so many parents during Open House.

First Grade
It’s hard to believe that we are starting the third trimester. We have already learned so much this year!
We have been using our I-Pads to practice skills! We use the Freckle app to practice English-Language Arts (explore vocabulary, read interesting fiction and non-fiction articles, and strengthen comprehension skills). Recently, we read about Dr. Martin L. King, President Washington and President Lincoln which helped us explore their lives in greater detail and complete Thinking Maps about their heroic lives. Freckle Math activities are helping us build number sense and increase addition and subtraction fact fluency while using higher level thinking skills for problem solving. Seesaw continues to be a favorite app. We enjoy practicing benchmarks across the curriculum! Having the ability to use these apps and the Superkids portal at school and home provides great opportunities to individualize learning.
In Religion, we are learning about the events in Jesus’s life and the parables that he taught. Life Skills and Ethics Across the Curriculum lessons also remind us of Christ’s teachings. We are illustrating and writing about these in our journals. Literature stories are always a hit. Some of our favorite books include Dr. Martin L. King (Tolerance), Chicken Sunday (Integrity), and Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink (Respect). Conflict Resolution and Superkids Lasting Lessons help us explore peaceful ways to communicate, show respect for personal space, use cooperation and appropriate gestures and body language, clear up misunderstandings, and ask nicely.
As Life Long Learners, we continue to explore STREAM activities. We tested our hypothesis in a variety of ways, including sink and float, dissolving solids in solutions, and whether the color of an apple determines the number of seeds inside. Using our Kagan, cooperative learning strategies for these educational activities helped us with interpersonal skills as we practiced teamwork. Everyone enjoyed National Catholic Schools’ Week! Student Council planned magnificent events to celebrate our Catholic heritage. Our room parents planned an amazing Valentine’s Day lunch and made cookie decoration boxes. Thank you all for participating in our festivities.
In Math, we are learning about place value, composing and decomposing numbers, and addition and subtraction through 20. Our addition and subtraction facts have expanded to fact families through 15. Literacy skills continue to expand through a variety of events. Thinking Maps help us summarize and organize our written expression. Additionally, the Jane Schaffer writing method is being used with great success! We are currently working on writing and illustrating books for the “PBS Go Writers Contest.”
So far, First Graders have read hundreds of books and taken over 990 Accelerated Reading quizzes! This program demonstrates that reading improves comprehension and fluency! Ninety-nine percent of the students have earned 10 or more points. Students have recently earned the following:
Independent Reader (10 points)-Evelyne, Anthony, Noah, John, Allyson, and Sebastian J.
Super Reader (15 points)-Alina, Jacob, Paul, Victoria, Winry, Fiona, Eli, Kasen, and Sebastian L.
Advanced Reader (20 points)-Liam, James, Scarlett, Camilla, and Juliet

Thank you for your donations to our Mission Projects during our Catholic Schools’ Week. We collected 278 brushes and combs thanks to your generosity. What wonderful ways for us to live the Gospel message (Matthew 25) and our School wide Learning Expectations (demonstrating a spirit of service)!
Thank you for thinking of me in such a special way for Teachers’ Appreciation Day and Valentine’s Day! I am grateful for your continued support, kind words, and dedication. God bless all of you.
Mrs. Kelly Thomas
Second Grade
As we welcome this new year, we ask God to come into our lives evermore as we prepare for our two Sacraments. We realize and understand how grateful we are to be students here at St. Francis. Recently, we honored St. Francis de Sales on his feast day, January 24, by choosing our favorite quote to live by. Second grade chose, “Make friends with the angels, who invisible, are always around you.” We are striving to continue excellence the best we can in school and with our friendships and family. We are excited for the love that February brings! With Catholic Schools Week at an end, we appreciate how fortunate we are to be in a school that not only teaches our foundational subjects, but also how we can nurture our relationship with God. Each day we are blessed to know that our faith and academics are going to be the best it can be with God on our side.
We will soon be entering the 3rd Trimester! We are learning to work more independently, read more chapter books and take the ARs, and understand better study habits. We are learning how to write on lined paper with a proper heading. We soon will be taking our very first D.O.G. test! We feel like we’re Third Graders in training.
Here is a brief look into our classroom studies!
In Math, we just finished our chapter on adding two three digit numbers together. We are mathematicians! We are now focusing on subtracting two three digit numbers, which will be fun because we can use our highlighters.
In Reading, we just finished our Unit 10. We found out that the Superkids were able to sleep over in the Natural History Museum and learn about different exhibits. In Writing, we have just finished our fourth paragraph. We have loved learning about Penguins and their life cycles. We are working hard on our next one, about George Washington. It’ll be exciting to see and hear what is so special about him.
In Science, we just finished our chapter on landforms and the many types of them. We love using our arms in class to represent and act out the landforms. In Social Studies, we are currently learning about past and present living. We are learning all about the American Revolution and how George Washington was a great leader. Our favorite person is Paul Revere because he ran all over telling our troops to get ready! We had a blast acting out this war, and even had our own king-King Giorgio! We soon will be learning all about Tonga and all the traditions this country has to offer. We are going to be practicing our dance and working on how to say hello, goodbye, thank you, and welcome!
In our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, we are in the beginning stages of our preparation for First Reconciliation. We know there are four steps and that each step is equally important. We have created our tracing booklet to show the steps. We are then moving on to creating a booklet to show the meaning of each step. Our maxims are helping us to examine our conscience. We are choosing three maxims each week to practice. Carrying our light is an important responsibility. God will help us to prepare and strengthen our relationship to become our own light carrier.
Ms. Washington has discussed a lot with us about big problems versus small problems. She has taught us that we can solve our own problems using our talking power. We were introduced to the story The Jelly Donut Difference in which we can always strive to be kind to others because it will make everyone happy. We then got to make our own donuts!
Congratulations to Atlas Pascual, Ellie Freeman, Kehau Cantiberos, Eve Cretin, and Calvin Marshall for receiving the 2nd Trimester SLE Awards! Congratulations to Olivia Hernandez (1st Place), Vey Cohen (2nd Place), and Aliza Gagne (3rd Place) for winning in the St. Francis de Sales Science Fair!
We cannot put down our books! I have never seen so many students who love to read! In Accelerated Reading, to date, we have taken and passed 1,370 quizzes. Just look at these amazing readers:

Third Grade
Third Grade is excited to be putting on our first drama ministry. Auditions were a bit nerve wrecking as it was our students’ first time but they did great. We are working together with Mr. Blaskey to learn the fundamentals of drama while further developing our appreciation for the art. Our performance focuses on the courage of Rosa Parks and those who protested by boycotting buses. This story reminds us to strive to do what is right and not what is easy. We hope to see many families there in support.
We recently finished reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater. This novel taught us the importance of following our dreams and welcoming unforeseen opportunities. We can tie this theme into our lives as God at times may call unto us when we least expect it.
We have been enjoying the Valentine’s season. We practiced our multiplication facts by using conversation hearts. We counted how many hearts of each color there were and then multiplied by 2,3,4,6,7, and 8. We also played a game in which students competed against another classmate in a race. The students would take turns rolling two dice and multiply those two numbers. The student with the highest product got to advance around the boardgame. We are looking forward to our class celebration and the spaghetti lunch this month. In math we are learning division. The students are doing well with the challenges that come in learning something new. Some students participated in the science fair and did amazing work.
We are looking forward to Multicultural Week and are very excited to learn all about Armenia. The students are also eager for the Spring concert. We are working on our PBS stories. I am so excited to see the work that will be submitted.
Our Accelerated Reading program is looking great as well. Many students have already surpassed their goals and I am so proud of them!

Fourth Grade
It is hard to believe that we are already into February of 2025! We have had so much going on that the time is just flying by. We are so happy we were once again able to present experiments at the annual Science Fair! In preparation, we have been learning about the elements of a Science Fair project and have done many experiments to demonstrate the process. Seven of our students, Kinley Ferreira, Mia Garner, Saul Luna, Kelly Medallo, Alexis Rosales, Erlise Saraste, and Delilah Uribe participated this year, and we enjoyed their projects and congratulate them on their hard work.
Catholic Schools Week was a blast! The Fourth Grade showed tremendous spirit with full participation in every activity available. A sincere thank you to all the parents who supported our charities by sending in donations. We were able to help many people who depend on your generosity. It was also very special to be included in the All Catholic School’s Mass as we watched the live stream and participated fully. We enjoyed seeing the Bishop perform the Mass. It was a week to remember, and certainly a true celebration of Catholic Schools!
St. Valentine’s Day is another special event we are looking forward to! It is fun to tell others that we care about them and to hear from those who care about us. We are sending our love to all of you and hope you have a day filled with nice surprises!
In Math we have been exploring factors and multiples, and as always, working on story problems. Every day adds a new way to manipulate figures. Please keep practicing your multiplication facts daily and on Freckle.
In Reading we recently finished a unit of nonfiction stories that taught us about our Earth. We learned about natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes, and far off places like Antarctica! Throughout these stories we learned how scientists use Lifeskills such as initiative, tolerance, perseverance, and respect to solve many problems. We discuss these traits in reading but also in in Religion as well. We need our children to realize that their actions can have far reaching impacts on the lives of others. Following in Jesus’ footsteps by being kind and tolerant of others is something to always strive for.
We are currently reading the novel The 13th Floor by Sid Fleishman. It is a story of adventure on the sea as our main character, Buddy, gets transported back in time to meet his ancestor who was a captain of a pirate ship! Very exciting reading!
In Social Studies we completed a unit on the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and we pledged to work to fulfill his dream of equality for all people. We are now beginning a unit on Hungary to prepare for our Multicultural Program in March. It will be interesting to learn about a climate so very different from ours, and all the unique customs of the land. Each student will be assigned a topic to present and projects will be due March 10th. Finally, we are also starting a chapter on the gold rush in Nevada History. We will have some fun learning how the miners influenced the development of our state. We also have a field trip to the McCaw School of Mines set up for the 24th of March so we can experience what we are reading about first hand.
Don’t forget our PBS Go Writer’s Contest is coming up quickly! All stories are due by March 7th.

Fifth Grade
In Religion, we delved deeper into the parts of the Mass, and learned more about the Eucharist. We love playing “Stump the Shepherd” at the end of each chapter. We usually win!
We finished the unit on Americans during the Revolution in Reading. We learned new, interesting facts about American heroes and also about many unsung heroes of the war. This month, we will begin reading The Secret Garden as a class. Can’t wait for the movie and snacks when we finish.
Fractions are our favorite part of Math! We love adding, subtracting, and multiplying them. Can’t wait to learn how to divide them. After we complete the unit on fractions, we will play a fun “escape type room” game. The winners will get a special prize. Wonder what it will be?
In Social Studies we completed a unit on the Original Thirteen Colonies. We think it would have been very interesting to live back then. Exploring new lands is appealing. In the next chapter, we will learn more about the Founding Fathers and Mothers of our country, and the American Revolution.
Human impacts on Earth’s systems is the new topic we are learning about in Science. We are comparing and contrasting efficient and wasteful uses of energy by humans. We made some new dog toys out of renewable resources. Hopefully, Mrs. Taubert’s dogs will approve. We hope in the future that more people take better care of our home, Earth.
We continue to practice our life skills everyday including courage, prayer, and patience.

Sixth Grade
We have had a busy month so far! Students participated in the 6th Grade Prayer & Flag Ceremony and did a beautiful job. We also hosted the Valentines’ Day Mass, with our readers handling the pressure with confidence and style. Thank you to all of the parents who supported our Valentines’ Day fun! With gift boxes, treats, and pizza, it was really nice to take part in community building and social interaction.
In Religion class, we have started our studies in our Family Life book. Please ask your student to bring it home so that you may review and share in some of the topics with them. In our religion text, we will begin our Unit: God Leads the Chosen People.
We are finishing up our Module on India in Social Studies. Meanwhile, we are learning about Figi as we prepare for our multicultural day assembly!
Closing out the 2nd Trimester, students have been working very hard in their other subjects as well. They have been working diligently on the writing process in English, grammar, and reading. In Math, they are finishing up exponents and are working on the distributive property and/or order of operations
PE has been busy as well. They are learning to work together as a team and be supportive to each other. They have started working on the rules and skills in Volleyball.
Overall, we continue to practice proper behavior in the classroom and how to positively interact with our classmates. Fortunately, we have all been blessed to be in an environment where Jesus is the example and the Lord, our God, is our guide!

Seventh Grade
This trimester has gone by so fast, and with it, we have gained new knowledge. Our life skills continue to be a part of our everyday lessons. Through our Reading curriculum, we have been discussing questions such as, “How can we use personal responsibility to help us be our best?” and “Does using your best effort always mean you will succeed?”
Now with the third trimester upon us, we are looking forward to putting our final stamp on our 7th grade year. We are doing really well with Stations of the Cross; we take our responsibility very seriously! Multi-cultural week is almost here March 18th. We continue to utilize Technology with the use of Apple TV, and I-Pads. Thank you, Mrs. Thomas for a fabulous Reading Week. We enjoyed the literary lounging with our prayer pals.
In Math, we are learning about rational numbers. We are adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying rational fractions. In Science, we have just finished learning about the formation of volcanoes.
In Reading we just wrapped up the story “Triangle Factory Fire” which was a story about clothing mill factory fire which lead to new labor laws that helped ensure the safety of many factory workers.
In English, we are still working on writing using the Jane Schafer writing program. Students enjoy the collaboration of whole group-working together to talk and discuss what they are thinking. We also learned to compare and use verbs in different tenses, along with choosing the right verb that agrees with the subject of the sentence in person and number.

Eighth Grade
The Eighth Grade truly enjoyed Catholic Schools’ Week. We would like to thank Mrs. Wilson and Student Council for their hard work and preparation for a wonderful week. Also, Eighth Grade
was invited to attend Mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the other Seventh and Eighth Grade
classes from our schools across the Archdiocese. It is a privilege to be in such a wonderful Archdiocese. The reception following the Mass was also very nice with water and donuts. Our activities for Catholic Schools’ Week were also a lot of fun. The Dynamic Duo dress day along with the concert by Joe Melendrez was the best part of the week. We ended our week with a teacher pep rally thrown by our one and only Mrs. V. On Friday afternoon we watched the movie “The Perfect Game” which was filled with life skills that we use daily.
We had a fund-raiser movie night and wish to thank everyone who attended. On February 7, most of the 8th grade attended the Valentine’s Dance at St. Anthony of Padua. We had a terrific time at the dance.
Our art projects after Christmas break were our traditional Eighth Grade timeline and Las Vegas hotels. The hotels are displayed in the hallway. We are looking forward to our multicultural art projects for our country of Tanzania.
From December to February, the science fair has consumed much of our science time. Eighth grade used all the elements of writing as they developed their research paper, abstract, and conclusion. Many learned to determine what they would do differently if they were to do the experiment over again. This is all part of the science fair learning experience. We are now studying the Periodic Table of Elements.
In algebra, we are currently on chapter 4-5 learning about adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials. We are also discussing inequalities and developing our skills in scientific notation and exponents as well as factoring.
In social studies, we are currently studying about Teddy Roosevelt and the Spanish American War.
We are currently reading and doing a tree-map on “My Favorite Chaperone”. In English, we are studying the pronouns of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons.
In the month of January, the Eighth Grade took the Jane Schaeffer writing assessment. We are very thankful for Mrs. Antos and all the hard work she put into preparing us for this process.
In Spanish, we are studying the different types of movie genres. We continue to work on vocabulary and verb conjugation.
In religion, we are studying the “birth of the Church”. We discussed Peter, the Apostles, the sacraments, the hierarchy of the Church, and that Catholic means “universal".

Music
As we continue to explore the elements of music, this February-March we will learn about History of Music. We are going to learn about the lives of composers and their masterpieces. In the discussion will be the styles of Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Rossini, Chopin, Orff, and more. We will listen and analyze their music. We will learn how to conduct their music too.
Since multi-cultural week is fast approaching, I am helping all classes with their musical presentation. We also continue to learn sacred songs for our weekly masses. I have chosen music for our Spring Show as well. Each class will perform two songs from the 1960s. As you all know, our school is celebrating its 60th year anniversary this year so we will perform music from the 60s.
Our St. Francis De Sales school choir will join the 2025 Southern California Youth Choral Festival and Mass on March 22, 2025 in Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA. This festival is organized by the same organization called Pueri Cantores, that brought some of our singers with their families, to the Christmas Festival in Vatican City last 2023. The highlight of that event was singing at the New Year’s Mass of Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica. Our students joined thousands or other catholic school choirs around the world.

Physical Education and Sports
January has come and gone. February is one of my favorite months filled with lots of love in the air. I continue to remind myself of how grateful I am for teaching all our lovely students.
We had a great month staying active in class and working hard. We will continue to work on our cardio and our running.
We have also finished our basketball unit. We played basketball scramble and had a few one-on-one games. We also played knock out and we are learned the rules of basketball. We learned about defense. Our girls are in the middle of the season. So far, we have lost two very close games. We continue to practice and work hard. We are looking forward to the play-offs and bringing home a trophy. The season has been fun, and we have enjoyed working with one another. Please come support our team in the play-offs.
Soon we will begin to train for Volleyball, as we will begin our season in March.
We will be preparing for track as well. The track meet is scheduled for April 25th at Cristo Rey St. Viator. I am looking forward to our students running.
I will look forward to the weather getting nice again and enjoying some of our spring activities.
Thank you for your support.
Have a great month.
Stay active, stay healthy!

Principal News - February 2025
Dear Parents,
Thank you very much for all of your support and helping to make this year’s Catholic Schools Week celebration a fun and memorable experience for all of our students! The culmination of our week was the participation of students, faculty, staff and parents in prayer and song as we celebrated being a Catholic, faith-filled learning community. During our very first visit from Joe Melendrez, he reminded the students of how Jesus is our role model and our hero! He appreciated the warm welcome and hopes to visit our school again soon! His words were warmly received by the students and reinforced the message our 7th and 8th Graders received from Bishop Gordon earlier in the week. We are truly blessed!
The months of January and February are always filled with lots of special events including The Feast of St. Francis de Sales, Catholic Schools’ Week, The All Catholic Schools’ Spelling Bee, Science Fair, Valentine's Dance, and Girls Basketball (we are very proud of our Girls – once again this year, they will be playing in the Finals at Bishop Gorman High School)! We are now looking forward to the start of our Volleyball Season, Track, and the celebration of Nevada Reading Week (which begins on Monday, March 3rd!). As always, Mrs. Thomas has lots of wonderful Reading Week activities planned for our students, and we are looking forward to our very first "One Book/One School" project!
Scrip News - Each month the Scrip program makes so many events possible and last month was no exception. Scrip funds provided bus transportation field trips, Reading Week Incentives, teacher supplies, and ribbons for the Science Fair (a total of $2,866.25!). As always, we wish to thank each of our school families for their tremendous support of Scrip. Very special thanks go to those who ensure that our Scrip program runs well. The program would not be what it is without the dedicated efforts of Mrs. Chirpac. We truly appreciate your service to our school community!
