Community Meeting
Thursday October 1st marked our first community meeting of the school year. During these meetings we celebrate student birthdays, classroom learning and share student successes. It was so special to get the whole school together for this community meeting. What a wonderful Westshire tradition.
Emergency Drills
In the month of September brought three emergency drills. We conducted a fire drill, options based intruder drill and bus evacuation. I want to commend the staff and students, as they did a fantastic job on all three drills. Students exited the building calmly, safely and respectfully. We will continue to conduct drills throughout the year, in order meet our state requirements.
Open House
Please join us on Thursday October 15th from 5:00-6:00 for our Open House. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with your child's teacher, see what your child has been learning about and learn about what our school wide goals are. This is also an opportunity to learn more about the reading mentor program Everybody WINS! that will be present with a table. We will gather in the gym at 5:45 for closing remarks and a raffle.
Fundraising
In an effort to raise funds for unexpected learning opportunities, we will be participating in a Charlestown Wrap Fundraiser. This year we have been presented with an exciting opportunity to bring The Missoula Children's Theater to Westshire. The Missoula Children's Theater works will schools to stage a play with our students as the cast and crew in just one week. This fundraiser is totally online, meaning that students will not need to collect money or deliver items purchased. Be on the look out for information about the Charleston Wrap fundraiser in upcoming newsletters.

News from the Nurse
Hi families,
As we move through the school year, we are seeing an increase in illnesses. Please refer to our Guidelines for Sick Students to see if your student should be at school or feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
Over the next few weeks, I will be going into the classrooms to do some lessons.
With the younger grades I will be working on good hand hygiene. We will be using GloGerm lotion and a black light to see just how easily germs are spread and how proper hand hygiene can get rid of them!
Mrs.Ward and I will be working with the older grades learning about personal hygiene and will be sending home some care packages with deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste.
Please reach out with any questions!

Samuel Morey & Westshire Teachers Gather Together for Professional Development
On Friday October 9th Samuel Morey and Westshire teachers participated in professional development focused on literacy and team building. The morning started off with a screening of the movie The Right to Read, which was followed by a lively conversation about what concerns, ideas and changes the movie brought to light. Next staff took part in an "escape room" activity, which helped build trust between our collaborative partnerships. This activity helped teachers recognize what students experience during group activities, as well as build upon their individual strengths when working collaboratively. The remainder of the day was spent working in grade alike teams focused on literacy instruction, engagement and curriculum.
