Personal Electronic Device Policy
Please pay close attention to the following information as it is a shift from past practice at Briggs!
Dear BMS Families,
This week, our staff took time to thoroughly review and clarify expectations surrounding our updated Electronic Devices Policy with all students. We want to ensure that every student fully understands the guidelines and the reasons behind them.
Starting Monday, September 8, we will begin enforcing this policy consistently throughout the school day.
At BMS, your child’s academic and social success is our top priority. To protect the learning environment and ensure that students remain focused during school hours, all personal electronic devices must be powered off and securely stored during the entire school day, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
In accordance with Executive Order 25-09, students are prohibited from using personal electronic devices on campus during the school day. This includes—but is not limited to—cell phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds/headphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices. Devices must be stored in a zipped backpack or secured classroom storage. The device cannot be placed in a student’s pocket or on their person. The district is not responsible for the loss of, or damage to personal property.
We understand that communication is important. If your student needs to contact you during the day, they may use the student phone in the main office during passing periods or with staff permission. Likewise, if you need to reach your student, you may call the Briggs office at (541) 744-6350, or email.
Students using an electronic device during the school day will face disciplinary action.
The first time a student violates this policy their phone will be brought to the office to be picked up at the end of the student’s day on campus and will be documented with a minor referral.
Future violations will require a parent/guardian to retrieve the personal electronic device and will be documented with a major referral.
Further violations will result in a technology contract that will require students to proactively secure their phone in Student Services each day.
BMS staff requests that parents and students honor our desire to preserve the integrity of the learning environment and support our decision to discourage the use of personal electronic devices that may disrupt the lesson, classmates, and the teacher.

Briggs Family Information Post
Please read this letter carefully for news you can use in starting the school year!
- Building Schedule: We do not have the ability to accommodate large groups of students in the cafeteria in the morning before school. Please do not drop off students or send them from home to arrive at Briggs earlier than 7:50 am. Our doors open at 7:50 am whereupon students can enter the building for breakfast. Classes end at 3:05 and we expect students to leave campus promptly unless they are bus riders or involved in afterschool activities. Our two building schedules are attached here - BMS Regular Schedule and BMS Early Release Schedule
- Lockers: We have found that eliminating the use of lockers has decreased behaviors in the hallways and decreased classroom interruptions. Students may bring their belongings in a backpack and take that backpack from class to class.
- Transportation: At the middle school level, the district provides transportation for students that live 1.5 miles or more from the school. EVERY student must register for bus transportation EVERY year. You can do this through the district website Register for SPS Transportation. If you have questions, you can call the transportation department at 541-744-6373. This should be done as soon as possible so they can create the bus routes for this coming school year.
Meals: All breakfast and lunches are free to all students this year. Breakfast and lunch will be served in the cafeteria. Click HERE for breakfast and lunch menus.
Picture Day: School Pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 17. Packets will be handed out here at school or there is an option to order ONLINE. There will be an opportunity for picture retakes in October.
Cell Phone Policy: Students that bring cell phones and other electronics to the school will need to have them turned off and put away during the school hours from 8:15 to 3:05 every day. If students need to contact a parent, they should come down to the office to do so. Please help us to enforce this expectation so students can concentrate on their classes and school work while at school. You can view our cell phone policy HERE.
Attendance: We cannot stress enough the importance of making sure that your student is in school. Research shows that if a student attends at least 90% of the time, they are three times more likely to graduate. Please work toward scheduling appointments and vacations at other times so that your student can be in school.
Illness: We are still aware of the challenges that are still surrounding us. Please be mindful and aware of your student’s health and keep them home if they are sick and exhibiting symptoms that could infect and impact others.
Fees: There are no required fees for school. After the start of the school year, we will send out information to collect optional fees. These would include a yearbook ($15), a student body card ($8), Optional PE shirt ($6), band/orchestra instrument rental fees, etc.
Sports: We are excited to partner with Willamalane to provide after school sports. Students who are planning on participating in our fall sports of flag football, cross country, or volleyball can now register at the Willamalane website linked HERE. Fall sports will start on September 15th.
Supplies: We have included the supply list for this coming year - HERE. We know that these are challenging times for many and are working with our community sponsors to help provide some supplies. Do what you can and we will try to fill in the rest.

Back to School Evening: Briggs will host a Back to School Evening September 18 beginning at 5:30 pm. We hold this event on the blacktop behind the school where we have teacher and community displays and a FREE hot dog meal for all families. Kona Ice Truck will also be available for purchase (Briggs gets a portion of the proceeds from any shaved ice purchases). More information will be sent out as the date draws closer.
