Good afternoon Oakview families,

Spring has sprung and the days and weeks are flying by! We are looking for your help with a few things to make this a great end of the school year.

Laptops are used everyday at school - please remind your students to bring those, with their chargers, each day. Although we have some loaner laptops, we often have more students that have forgotten theirs than we have loaners! Please help your student remember to put that in their backpack so they are prepared for school, we appreciate your support!

Dress code continues to be an issue. Please remind students to keep things tasteful and modest. Students may dress in different clothes in the evenings or on weekends, but Oakview expectations are outlined in the middle level handbook (page 41) should you have any questions about what students can or cannot wear to school. Students may be sent to the clothing closet to pick out something different to wear if they are in violation of the dress code so they can go back to class and not miss instruction. Many reminders have been given to students and anybody that is in question of not following the guidelines will be sent to the office to change. Our goal is to not have these awkward conversations with your student, please support our efforts by reinforcing the message at home.

Middle Level Handbook

The end of the year is full of fun and exciting opportunities for students. We have field trips and special activities planned and want ALL students to be able to participate. The decisions students make everyday about their academics and their behaviors determine if they will participate in these privileges. Encourage your students to continue to work hard and keep focused on finish strong through the end of the school year. We want to honor that these opportunities create the lasting memories from middle school!

Thank you for your continuing support and encouragement - we couldn't do it without you!

Sincerely,

Oakview Administration

Positivity Project: Purpose

This week Oakview will be focusing on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. Appreciation of beauty and excellence means you notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. You don’t take things for granted.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, a song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of a skill can generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All of these feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.

Appreciating excellence and beauty helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around them. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside their head. And, not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing them to forget anxieties and troubles. And it is associated with other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.

To practice and encourage the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week!
