Harlandale Legacy, Harlandale Legacy,

March is in full swing, and with it comes a well-deserved Spring Break for our District. While this time offers an opportunity to rest and recharge, the dedication our staff shows to our students and families never takes a pause. I hope everyone enjoys the break and returns feeling refreshed for the months ahead.

I’d like to begin this month’s newsletter by recognizing our 2025–2026 Campus Teachers of the Year, an incredible group of educators who make a difference in the lives of our students each day through their commitment and care. A special congratulations goes to Ms. Cynthia Lopez from Harlandale Middle School, who has been named the 2026 Harlandale ISD District Teacher of the Year. During a surprise celebration at her campus, Ms. Lopez was also presented with the KENS5 EXCEL Award in partnership with Credit Human, along with a $2,000 prize in recognition of the impact she has on her students. Her story will be featured on KENS 5 in a few weeks, and we look forward to sharing more about the meaningful work she does each day. Congratulations to all of our outstanding educators, and thank you for the dedication you bring to our Harlandale Legacy.

Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) State Finalists Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) State Finalists

Congratulations to our talented student artists from Harlandale ISD who continue to shine through their creativity. Five incredible student-artists from Harlandale and McCollum High Schools have advanced as State Finalists in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), a statewide program through the Texas Art Education Association that recognizes exceptional student artwork. This year, more than 1,000 pieces advanced to the regional level, and only 84 moved forward to the state competition, making this an incredible accomplishment. Congratulations to our finalists: Destiny Palm, Lola Zapata, Daniela Garnica-Bolanos and Maricella Loera of Harlandale High School, and Joeanna Cruz of McCollum High School. Way to represent Harlandale ISD on the state stage!

Students from Kingsborough Middle School recently took part in the Alamo STEM Youth Summit at St. Philip’s College, joining hundreds of students from school districts across San Antonio for a day focused on STEM learning and career exploration. About 25 of our Harlandale ISD students participated through IDRA’s VisionCoders program, engaging in hands-on activities such as robotics, virtual reality simulations and cybersecurity challenges. The summit provided students with exposure to college pathways and high-demand careers in science and technology. Opportunities like this help our students explore future possibilities and see how their interests can lead to rewarding careers.

A milestone moment for Harlandale ISD! During a special ceremony, students in the first graduating class of the Next Gen Barber School at our CTE Center were recognized for completing their required training hours and are now preparing to take the state licensing exam. This achievement marks an important step toward their future careers and highlights the opportunities our Harlandale CTE programs provide. We wish these students the best of luck as they take the next step in their professional journey. We can’t wait to see where their talents take them!
