Our Favorite Tradition!
All families are invited to Christmas Tree Presentation tomorrow! We hope you’ll join us in the Nicholson Center from 9 a.m –10 a.m. It’s a program you won’t want to miss! We’ll also have coffee and donuts available in the concession stand. Seating fills up quickly, so please plan accordingly.
As a reminder, Friday is NOT a spirit wear day. Students must wear approved uniform bottoms and may choose to wear a festive Christmas top. If they do not wear a festive top, they should wear an approved uniform top.
Expressions of Gratitude
In honor of the English tradition of the 12 Days of Christmas, I’d like to share 12 things I am most thankful for this holiday:
1. Longtime Band Director Christian Smith and the Marching Bulldog Band. Come see them in action this very evening as part of the annual Monroe Christmas Parade!
2. The Christmas Tree Presentation in the Nicholson Center tomorrow at 9 a.m. Another great way to get into the Christmas spirit!
3. Final Exams! What in the world, you say?? Yes, in an age in education when many schools dumb down their academic program, I am thankful GWA still values a rigorous cumulative assessment at semester’s end. As a high school and college student, I recall feeling genuine accomplishment after lots of studying and finishing my exams.
4. Jordan Greene and her BARK (Building Academic Reasoning & Knowledge) team of Denise Schnieders and Kim Fulmer. We will soon expand this first-year enrichment program to more grades.
5. Chorale Director Corrie Beth Noll and her many marvelous melodious moments that keep us all singing and smiling.
6. Student Activities Director Amanda Jackson, who works tirelessly to coordinate so many great school traditions, such as the upcoming Gingerbread Christmas Celebration this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be there!
7. Longtime custodian Mr. David, who will make his delicious vegetable soup at the home-opening basketball games this Friday night. Go Bulldogs!
8. The front office dynamic duo of Tanya Rainford and Haley Brewer, whose boundless energy, contagious smiles, and conscientiousness keep the school humming by the minute.
9. 23-year veteran CFO Jenni Cole, who has devoted most of her career to our school and supporting the faculty and staff in so many ways that are both seen and behind the scenes. Thank you, Jenni, for your steadfast service and dedication.
10. Longtime nurse Libba Ford and her able nursing team of Rachel Choe, Morgan Ooley, Jane Root, and Emily Vannoy for caring for our kids in the clinic, and beyond.
11. Todd Shelnutt and his facilities team of Mark Liles, Adam Kimelman, and Bobby Testa for working during school – and during school breaks – to maintain our campus.
12. The Advancement Team and a very generous community, where this week 139 donors came together to help raise over $105,000 in support of the Annual Loyalty Fund, which provides the margin of excellence.
What do these 12 expressions of gratitude have in common? Not one would have been possible without teachers and coaches. Especially at this time of year, please take a moment to thank the adult caregivers in our school who make a difference in the life of your child. The foundation of every great school is the special relationship between teacher and student. That is who we are.
Godspeed and warm wishes to you and your family this Christmas Season!

Celebrating GWA’s National Merit Scholars
Congratulations to seniors Madeline Jackson and Addison Hayes on being named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. They represent the only semifinalists in Walton County. About 16,000 semifinalists were named nationwide in the fall, representing less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors. Finalists will be notified in February.
Congrats to seniors Blaise Trinh and Cale Fuller who received Letters of Commendation for their outstanding performance on the PSAT NMSQT.

Building Skills for the Future
High school students in Computer Science 100 at George Walton Academy are putting their Python programming skills to the test this month by building and racing robots through complex mazes using wireless radio communication.
The project represents the culmination of a semester's worth of coding instruction. Students first built robots that respond to commands from their computer terminals, then learned to control them wirelessly using radio signals. Working in pairs, students must coordinate on a shared radio frequency to navigate their robots through the maze and compete for the fastest time.
Students face real-world engineering challenges. They're debugging code together, making strategic decisions about which partner should drive, and constantly asking themselves how to optimize their robot's speed.
The collaborative project develops both technical programming skills and soft skills like communication and teamwork—competencies essential for college and the workforce.
The Great Thanksgiving STEM-tastrophe!
Our 3rd graders jumped into two hands-on Thanksgiving STEM challenges this week… and things got a little messy in the best way.
Students became “Thanksgiving Engineers” after discovering the chefs in our fictional Thanksgiving kitchen had run out of serving bowls. Their mission was to design a tool that could scoop, carry, and safely transport a blob of mashed potatoes from Point A to Point B without touching it and without spilling.
Students worked in teams to plan, build, test, and revise their devices. Two groups successfully delivered their potatoes to the second bowl, while one enthusiastic group attempted a full catapult launch. It did not end with a safe landing, but definitely earned creativity points! This challenge sparked great conversations about planning, problem-solving, and working together.
Next, students competed to build the tallest Thanksgiving food tower using mashed potatoes, celery, carrots, and rolls. They experimented with balance, structure, and stability to see which designs could stand the tallest without toppling.
Both challenges brought out big thinking, bigger laughs, and a whole lot of teamwork. Let’s hope our real Thanksgiving meals were a little less chaotic but just as fun!
The Power of a Generous Community
Because of YOU, this Giving Tuesday was nothing short of extraordinary. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our community, 139 donors came together to help raise over $105,000 in support of George Walton Academy. Congratulations to grandparent, Art Shell who was the lucky winner of the 4 Trip Raffle!
Your kindness fuels our mission, supports our people, strengthens our programs, and makes an immediate impact on the lives we serve every single day. We are humbled, grateful, and inspired by your belief in our work.
Thank you for showing up, giving back, and reminding us what’s possible when we come together.
Festive and Fun!
Our Gingerbread Christmas Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 4– 6 p.m. This beloved GWA tradition is open to the entire community, and we have an exciting lineup of activities planned for families to enjoy, including:
Free activities for kids
Holiday Market
Campfires & s’mores
SUPER YUMMY Brand-new food truck (menu attached)
Free photos with Santa
Music
Trackless train rides
Iceless plunge bounce house
Elsa will be there
In addition, each grade has done an amazing job creating its own Christmas tree this year! These trees will be for sale in the cafeteria during the event, with proceeds going towards the Annual Loyalty Fund, and all purchases are tax-deductible.
On Dec. 10, GWA families will receive the SAIS Parent Survey, an important opportunity to share your perspectives. Please be on the lookout for the emailed survey on Dec. 10 - the sender will be listed as surveys@sais.org. The school employed this same survey in 2024 and takes about 12 minutes to finish. It is entirely anonymous, and all responses are reported in aggregate. Your detailed feedback is essential in helping us better serve our community and strengthen the GWA experience. We hope you will take a few moments to share your insights - your voice directly influences future programming, planning, and school improvements. This winter we will provide a high-level summary of the survey results and benchmark key GWA metrics against SAIS benchmarks. Thank you in advance for your partnership and engagement.
Home Opener!
Cheer on our Bulldog Basketball teams on Friday night as they face BCA in their games on the home court! Go Bulldogs!
State Bound!
Our Game Day cheerleaders are competing at State this Saturday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. at Tattnall Square Academy! The girls will take the floor for Round 1 at 11:24 a.m. — and we cannot wait to see them shine!
Game Day competition emulates everything our girls do on a Friday night under the lights. Their 3-minute routine is broken into three parts:
Band Chant
Crowd-Leading Chant & Cheer
School Fight Song
Only the top 9 out of 18 teams will advance to Round 2. In that round, the girls will perform the same routine plus a situational cheer — where judges call out an offense or defense scenario, and our team must respond instantly with the correct call. It’s fast and it’s intense!
"These athletes have worked incredibly hard since summer and have overcome every challenge thrown their way," commented Coach Katie Padgett. "Watching them grow together, support one another, and show their love for their school has been such a joy. They are truly something special to watch as they lead the crowd with spirit, skill, and heart." Good luck, cheerleaders!
Strong Showing at Home
The George Walton Academy wrestling team had an impressive showing at yesterday’s home meet, winning ten of fifteen contested matches against Bethlehem Christian and Riverside Prep. Despite dropping both duals due to unavoidable forfeits, the Bulldogs showed grit, determination, and exceptional effort on the mat.
Both Cash Sorrow and Brody Hamman went undefeated on the day, securing wins in all of their matches. Shane Howard, Carter Hicks, Cale Fuller, Asher Aldridge, and Kaleb Chasse each added a strong individual victory to the team’s total.
The Bulldogs continue to build momentum early in the season and look forward to their next opportunity to compete.
Swim Dawgs Update
The GWA Swim Team competed in yet another successful meet on Friday, Nov. 21 at Georgia Tech. Varsity landed 3rd place overall and JV ended in 8th place. Morgan Davis was the high point scorer for the varsity team, bringing in 32 out of 88 total team points! Jett Davis was the varsity boys high point scorer with an 18 point contribution. For JV, Liam Silvers was the high point scorer with an impressive 27 points. Liam also amazingly placed 1st in all of his events! Kinsley Smith contributed an additional 4 points for JV. Way to go to our high point scorers and all contributing swimmers!
Not only were points put on the board for GWA, but many swimmers made impressive cuts in personal times for their individual events. Victorine Gervais shaved a remarkable 10.52 seconds off her time, which placed her as overall winner for seconds dropped for all events on both teams! This is an extremely impressive accomplishment– Go Victorine! Other notable time drops were Chloe Bettner with 4.13 seconds and Maddox Wells with 3.47 seconds. The Swim Dawgs are dropping seconds by the week and gearing up for the state championship in January!
The team is thrilled to be heading back to Georgia Tech this Friday, Dec. 5 to continue reaching goals and cutting time in preparation for state. Awesome job and good luck, swimmers!
