SMS 8TH GRADE STUDENTS STUDY MAPS TO LEARN THE HISTORY OF STRONGSVILLE

Eighth grade students in Mrs. Britton’s class are learning about topography and how to read and interpret a topographic map. The class is looking at old topographic maps of Strongsville, starting with maps from the 1960's, when much of Strongsville was considered farm country. They are comparing maps to the 1980’s, when Strongsville was undergoing a lot of growth.

The students have been fascinated to learn that Southpark Mall used to be open farmland and that there once was an airport in Strongsville (on land that is now Westwood Farms). They have also loved trying to find where they live and determine its elevation above sea level. Mrs. Britton has used these maps to also incorporate some mini history lessons about Strongsville.

MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MRS. MELISSA MOON - ART TEACHER AT MURASKI ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Melissa Moon is in her thirteenth year teaching for Strongsville City Schools. Mrs. Moon has taught art at Strongsville High School, Strongsville Middle School, Kinsner Elementary, Albion Middle School, and Center Middle School. She currently is the art teacher at Muraski Elementary. Mrs. Moon earned her undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and her graduate degree from Cleveland State University.

“We have an incredible group of students at Muraski! As an Art Educator, I have the privilege of watching our students grow creatively and collaboratively from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Seeing a student find success on an art project is truly rewarding. I strive to use art as a vehicle to teach soft skills and life skills. Creativity, problem solving, resilience, organization, time management, and teamwork - art teaches them all!”

“Muraski truly feels like one big family. I enjoy collaborating with students, staff, and parents to create experiences that strengthen our school community. Our students love participating in "Art Crew." They utilize time before school, at recess, and after hours to bring color and creativity to our halls. From the Art Show and parade floats to collaborative projects for special occasions, our school community strongly supports the arts and our students!”

Thank you Mrs. Moon for inspiring our students and providing opportunities to explore their creativity!
