Helping Your Child Navigate Anxiety

The CALM Approach

Childhood anxiety can feel overwhelming, but parents have powerful tools to support their children. Try the CALM method:

  1. Connect, Don't Dismiss When your child shares their worries, listen actively and validate their feelings. Instead of saying "Don't worry" or "It's nothing," try: "I hear that you're feeling scared. Can you tell me more about what's making you feel this way?"
  2. Teach Simple Breathing Techniques Introduce fun, age-appropriate breathing exercises. For younger children, you might call it "belly breathing" or "dragon breaths"
  • Breathe in slowly through the nose, making their belly expand like a balloon
  • Exhale slowly, imagining they're gently blowing out birthday candles
  • Practice together during calm moments so it becomes a familiar strategy
  1. Create a Worry Box Help your child externalize their anxieties by creating a special "worry box"
  • Decorate a small container together
  • Encourage them to write or draw their worries and "put them away" in the box
  • This symbolic act can help children feel they have control over their anxious thoughts
  1. Establish Predictable Routines Consistent daily schedules can provide a sense of security for anxious children. Visual schedules or morning/bedtime routines can be especially helpful.
  2. Model Calm Responses Children learn emotional regulation by watching their parents. When you manage your own stress calmly and positively, you're teaching them valuable coping skills.

Remember, if anxiety persistently interferes with your child's daily life, please feel free to reach out to our school counselor for additional support and strategies.
