Dear Talley Street Community,
Talley Street received some fantastic news this week — we have been named a 2025 Title I Distinguished School! 🎉
This prestigious recognition honors the highest-performing Title I schools in the state of Georgia. Distinguished Schools represent the top 5% of Title I Schoolwide and Targeted Assistance schools, based on combined ELA and math content mastery scores from the most recent statewide assessments. This is an incredible accomplishment, and it belongs to our entire Talley Street community! Thank you for your continued dedication and support — this recognition reflects the hard work we've done together.
We also received $4,669 from the Decatur Education Foundation (DEF) for Teacher Innovation Grants! Congratulations to the following teachers for earning these awards:
- Laurie Kezh – $546 for Talley Zen Den
This grant will be used to enhance my Zen Den, a calming space where students can come to practice self-regulation and mindfulness skills. The funds will be used to add essential sensory items such as tactile tools, soothing lighting, and relaxation materials that support emotional balance and focus. These additions will help create a more supportive environment where students can manage stress, build coping strategies, and return to the classroom ready to learn. I am so appreciative of Decatur Education Foundation for continuing to provide materials that enhance student learning and growth.
- Tanya Jessup – $850 for Music Instruments for All
Ms. Jessup has purchased accessible instruments that are adapted to accommodate a user's specific abilities. They have buttons instead of keys, and adjustments for physical support, like thicker grips. The sensory benefits and these adaptations foster creativity, independence, and social interaction. Thank you DEF!
- Alan Pendrick – $1,500 for Sensory Path
Thanks to a very generous grant from the Decatur Education Foundation, Talley will soon be installing a Sensory Path! Sensory Paths create a space for safe, structured movements that promote regulation and focus. While it has particular benefits for neurodiverse students, this path will be available to all Talley Tigers. You can click to read more about the benefits of the Sensory Path, and see an example of a path design.
- Colleen Dunbar – $300 for Tiny Art Gallery
Talley Art revived a DEF Innovation grant to start a Talley Tiny Art Gallery! This will be a student-curated display space for our school. Think “little free library type space that displays tiny works of art”. A team of 5th grade curators will launch the gallery in January. Stay tuned!
- Jennifer Thomas – $1,473 for Interactive Adapted Book Library for Diverse Learners
This project aims to develop a comprehensive library of interactive adapted books designed to enhance the reading experience for children with developmental, cognitive, physical, and/or language impairments. The goal is to transform traditional reading materials into engaging, accessible, and multisensory learning tools that cater to the unique needs of diverse learners.
We are so grateful to the Decatur Education Foundation for their generous support and for all that they do for CSD staff and students. Thank you, DEF — Talley Street appreciates you!
With gratitude,
Billy
Progress Reports
We are excited to share that your child's mid-semester progress report will be available in the Parent Portal at 4PM a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025.
Please note that these progress reports are a snapshot in time, not final grades. They provide an overview of your child's academic progress midway through the semester. Teachers will continue entering grades and feedback throughout the term, so your child's report will continue to evolve.
We encourage you to take this opportunity to review your child's progress, celebrate their achievements, and discuss any areas where additional support may be needed. Open communication among parents, students, and teachers remains key to a successful learning experience.
If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to contact their teacher or the school administration. We're here to support your child's growth and success.
Directions to access grades can be found on page 23 of the Grading and Reporting Handbook.
Student Portrait Day
Please see below for which date your child's class has portrait day.

Plastic Film for House Points
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to our last schoolwide collection. Together we diverted more than 80 pounds from the landfill! Our top three houses were Amistad, Reveur and Altruismo. Our next collection for house points will be Wednesday, November 5. (We regret the error last week, which identified October 22.) Click here for information about what counts as plastic film and learn about how it gets processed and reused.
Save the Small Stuff
Loose bottle caps, plastic bread tags, food pouch tops, milk pull-tags...These small items don't have to be garbage. Through Ridwell, these items can be recycled. Send your small items to the Green Team for a special collection.
Students also are encouraged to bring items featured in the Green Team Store, which can earn them house points and prizes!
- Reading Rally is in full swing! Remind your student(s) to turn in their BINGO cards to their homeroom teacher tomorrow, Friday, 10/17! Any forgotten cards can be emailed to general@talleypto.org by dismissal tomorrow. Every student who turns in a BINGO card by tomorrow with at least one square completed earns house points! Prizes will also be awarded for individual winners in each class, grade-level class winners, and one classroom will take home the trophy! There’s still time to set up your student’s fundraising page at bit.ly/readingrally25. Collect donations through Monday (10/20) until midnight to support Talley’s programs!

Today, Superintendent Dr. Gyimah Whitaker sent a letter to all families via email to inform the City Schools of Decatur community that the CSD Board of Education has initiated a comprehensive review of K-2 school utilization. This review will assess how CSD's K-2 schools are currently being utilized to ensure that space, staffing, and resources align with student needs while also maintaining operational efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
The Board of Education work session on October 14, 2025, served as a preliminary discussion to review various options, including the potential closure of a K-2 school. The consulting firm Education Planners has been engaged to facilitate this process and presented a timeline for the first time at the work session, along with a detailed overview of the school closure and redistricting process. The board has not yet decided which school, if any, will be closed. There will be opportunities for families to share their input in the upcoming weeks.
Please read the full letter in English here. More information and additional language translations of the letter are available on the K-2 School Consolidation & Redistricting Process webpage.
CSD families are invited to upcoming public hearings for feedback on the K-2 School Consolidation and Redistricting Process:
- Wednesday, October 29, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Beacon Hill Middle School, Cafeteria
- Thursday, November 13, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Beacon Hill Middle School, Cafeteria
While we encourage everyone to attend the public input hearings, please also consider submitting your feedback via this feedback form.
A Season of Giving
A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur ensures that our community’s children and seniors in need experience the joy of the holidays with gifts matched to their wishes. This program is made possible through the generous spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. Applications for children are due by October 31. And here you can find information on how to sponsor a child, teen, or senior citizen, as well as how to volunteer.
