Welcome Back!

Welcome back and thank you all for a tremendous start to the 2022-23 school year! In my travels throughout our school, it was a true pleasure to see our students and staff forming positive relationships and engaging in strong foundational learning that will form the bedrock for success this year. It has been a long time since we have had a "normal" start to the school year. Our ability to come together without the restrictions of the past two years resulted in a palpable positivity in the building that was a true pleasure to be a part of.

We have a few additional news and notes below. As always, please let us know if we can support your student and their success at BHS in any way.

Go Blue!

Brockport CSD to host Rachel’s Challenge Student Seminars, Workshops, and Community Event

Brockport Central School District is working with Rachel’s Challenge to stimulate academic achievement and social-emotional learning by focusing on the connection between students, staff and community.

Using the remarkable story of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School tragedy, Rachel’s Challenge awakens individual hope and purpose, which in turn promotes safer, more connected school communities.

On Thursday, September 15, 2022, Brockport CSD will be hosting a Community Event for district families at 6:00 p.m. at Brockport High School’s auditorium. A Rachel’s Challenge staff member will share Rachel’s story, and parents will learn how Brockport CSD plans to implement the program within the District. To reserve your seat for this community event, please pre-register by September 14 at www.bcs1.org.

Additionally, each day September 19th through 22nd, members of each BHS grade level will be participating in a Rachel's Challenge Chain Reaction workshop. As space is limited, students from each grade level were selected at random and invitations were sent via email to students and parents. However, if your student would like to participate, they can stop by the main office to pick up a permission slip and sign up. An outline of our scheduled events is below.

This tragic yet inspiring story illustrates how deliberately reaching out to others with kind words and small acts of kindness can have a life-changing impact. Starting in September, the District plans to present Rachel’s Challenge to students in grades 7-12 through age and content-appropriate assemblies and chain reaction workshops. The goal is to work as a team to inspire and empower students to affect permanent, positive change within the District and community through their actions and words.

In just over two decades of social-emotional and mental health training, Rachel’s Challenge has reached over 30 million students, educators and community members. Its programs, along with the existing efforts of the schools, have helped to sustain a culture where harassment, violence and self-harm are reduced; where teachers are free to teach, and students are empowered to learn. An independent study conducted by Multi-Dimensional Education, LLC, a nationally recognized educational program evaluator, found that, “Schools implementing Rachel’s Challenge with fidelity achieved statistically significant gains in community engagement, faculty/student relationships, leadership potential and school climate; along with a reduction in bullying behavior.”

“Rachel’s Challenge works to turn the ideals of kindness and compassion into actionable strategies that help promote a safe and productive learning environment,” said Brockport Superintendent Sean Bruno. “We look forward to sharing this inspiring program with our students, staff and families this fall and throughout or school year.”

Thank you, and we look forward to working together to promote a positive and connected school community.

Anti-Vape Campaign

Dear BHS Parents and Guardians,

I hope this correspondence finds you and yours well! We are off to an excellent start to the 2022-23 school year!

As we reflect upon strengths and growth areas of the past school year and consider interventions or changes we might make in response, one of the most frequent student concerns last year was their inability to use the bathroom due to other students vaping in our high school bathrooms. As we prepare for the 2022-23 school year, we plan to take several steps to address this concern at Brockport High School in the best interest of our students’ health and the safety of our school.

E-cigarettes, or vapes as they are commonly referred, have rapidly become popular among U.S. middle and high school students, with use increasing 900% from 2011-2015. According to a 2020 U.S. CDC study, 19.6% of high school students reported using a vaping product within the past 30 days. Among those, 22.5% of high school students said they did so daily. Some of the more popular vapes contain the amount of nicotine in each pod equal to 1-2 packs of cigarettes. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can harm the developing brain, can impact learning, memory, and attention, and can increase risk for future addiction to other drugs. Last year at Brockport High School, we had nearly 70 disciplinary events related to vaping.

It is our responsibility to create the safest, securest, and most comfortable school environment for our students as possible. As a significant concern related to our students’ health and safety, we must take steps to counteract this growing practice among our students. In the coming months, you will hear of opportunities for Brockport students and parents to learn more about the dangers and damaging effects of vaping. These opportunities are being co-planned with the support of our PTSA and the Brockport High School Prevention Counselor, Ms. Nicca Simonelli. There will also be increased posters and flyers in Brockport High School to inform and educate our students on the ways the use of vapes may affect their body and well-being.

Additionally, we will increase our security presence in areas where students tend to use e-cigarettes and vaping devices, such as our student bathrooms. When students are found in possession or to have used a vape device on campus or at a school event, they are violating the BCSD Code of Conduct (3.07), and our disciplinary response will follow the progression listed below:

  • First offense: 3-day Out-of-School Suspension
  • Second offense: 5-day Out-of-School Suspension
  • Third or more offense: 5-day Out-of-School Suspension pending Superintendent Hearing

It is through this multifaceted approach and with your support that we hope to reverse the trajectory of this pervasive concern, to support student health and well-being, and to provide the most safe, secure, and comfortable learning environment for our students.

If you would like to discuss this concern or these measures with me, please call the Brockport High School Main Office at 585-637-1870. You may also contact Ms. Simonelli, Our Prevention Counselor, at 637-1975 for additional guidance or support.

Thank you.
