Bike to School Day!
May 25th, our school is celebrating “Bike to School Day” and encouraging our students to ride their bikes or walk to school. This is a way to encourage alternative forms of transportation and physical activity.
Students who participate are welcome to have free dress on that day. Water and a snack will be available for those students that participate in this event. If biking from home is not an option, parents and students can park a few blocks away from school (ex. The Hagen or BigLots parking lots) and bike or walk the rest of the way to school.
Students can enter a drawing at school for prizes. We will have a bike booth set up at both Robin Hall and Markell Hall.
While Robin Hall has a fenced area to secure bikes, those riding to Markell Hall are encouraged to bring a bike lock from home to secure their bikes outside the building.
Before sending your kids out the door to bike to school, remind them of bike safety and make sure they have their helmet!
Congratulations Rice University Graduate Autumn Engebretson!
Autumn attended St. Paul's Academy (now The Franklin Academy) from 2nd Grade through 12th Grade!
She is now graduating from Rice University with a double major in Mathematical Economic Analysis and Managerial Studies. She’s starting a great job in renewable energy private equity next month in Houston.
We are so proud of you and all of your accomplishments!
8th Grade Escape Room
This was a great activity that combined fun, learning and brilliant collaboration! The "spy" was captured and everyone celebrated with a sweet reward.

What Our Alumni Have to Say
Arden Hunt | Graduated from 8th Grade in 2016 (Studies at Whitman College)
"I went through 8th grade at The Franklin Academy (previously St. Paul's Academy) and my brother was part of the middle school program, too. Looking back, it is easy to see what I gained. Most importantly, I learned how to learn: how to have intellectual conversations, read and think critically, write with conviction, and work collaboratively.
St. Paul's taught me the value of relationships with fellow students and teachers, which I have relied on heavily throughout high school. It is these values, that I learned at St Paul's, that guided me in my college search.
I feel that I am a much more confident person, intellectually and socially, because of my time at St. Paul's."

Math Hour
Our adopted lower school math program is enVision Math. In a non-COVID year, we have a common math hour that puts students into math groupings by ability/readiness from 2nd through 8th Grade. In third grade, students will focus on these skills & concepts:
Place Value | Multiplication | Data Collection | Fractions | Problem Solving | Addition & Subtraction | Division | Measurement | Decimals | Fact Fluency... *Overall, the goal is for students to strengthen their number sense as mathematicians.
The Reading Corner - With Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. Snyder
THANK YOU! Our Village Books Franklin Academy day was a smash success! When Mrs. Black made the PA announcement that we had bought $4, 363.16 worth of items and earned $873 for library books, the library at Markell Hall (on the second floor) vibrated with the students cheering . I started to cry, because students cheering for books is a librarian’s dream! Thank you for supporting our school, a local bookstore, and your students’ love of reading!
Mrs. Snyder, her son Samuel, and I met up at the Fairhaven location last week and had the most fun we’ve had in a long time picking out books from our student request lists! We scoured the discount books first to stretch our money farther (Samuel was an excellent bargain hunter and I don’t know what I would do without him!), and in the end bought 37 books for our libraries! We had a bit leftover and I ordered 18 more books online to fill in some series gaps (there is nothing more frustrating than having 1,2, and 5 in a series!).
That’s 55 new books for our libraries—thank you!
It was such a success and so much fun that I have already booked another Franklin Academy Day at Village Books, for May the 4th, 2022! We hope to continue to have an in person, in building Scholastic book fair to benefit classroom teachers every fall--- waiting for the pandemic to end so we can make that happen.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Samuel

4th Grade Learns About the Oregon Trail!
Fourth grade students designed Oregon Trail postcards as a culminating activity for the end of study of the history/timeline of Oregon Trail. Students wrote from the perspective of someone traveling the trail, including life events and scenery, as well as the hurdles and obstacles they encountered along the way.
Students illustrated an image of what a postcard would have looked like had the pioneers been able to send letters/postcards home during that time period.
