A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

Wow.....how can May be here! The year has flown by, and I'm so deeply proud of the learning & growth that has taken place among students at Forest Hills! This edition of the FH Flyer has a great deal of important information that will help guide you through all the exciting events of May!

As you know, the Alabama Literacy Act was passed a few years ago, but please note that it went into full effect this school year (2023-2024). The school is scheduled to receive ACAP Reading subtest scores on May 17th. Parents will soon thereafter receive an Individual Student Report (ISR) explaining your child's score. It is important that you read this report when it comes home because students who are not reading on grade level could be retained in 3rd grade. Please scroll to the bottom of this newsletter to review the Pathways to Promotion graphic. Please contact your child's teacher or myself if you have questions regarding the Alabama Literacy Act.

Our Robotics Team, The Flo-Bots, will be selling candy bars for $1 during the month of May. They are working to raise money so that they can attend even more robotics competitions next school year!

By now you should have received a note in your child's folder about the Forest Hills Book Bus. We are thrilled to serve the children of Florence by driving the Falcon Feeder around town each Thursday in June & July. Our goal is to help students avoid the summer slide by making books and popsicles available to children to read for free. We will use the honor code system....children can return the book the following Thursday, keep it or pass it along to a friend.

There are two ways you can help with the Book Bus! First, you can help by donating books in good condition. Please see the flyer below for further information. Also, you can be a sponsor of the Book Bus. Levels include:

  • Blue Sponsor-$50 contribution
  • White Sponsor-$100 contribtuion
  • Silver Sponsor-$200 contribution

Sponsors will be recognized with their logo on future communications and on the Book Bus. Size of recognition will depend on the level of sponsorship. If you're interested in being a sponsor, please call (256) 768-2500 or email lfowler@florencek12.org.

Finally, as we enter into the busy month of May, I ask that students, staff, parents, and guests be cognizant of the importance of us all living out "The Falcon Way." We are tired and looking forward to summer break. With that I know we can sometimes feel weary or stressed. Let's choose to stay the course, keep up the hard work, and finish strong! Each morning we say, "With integrity, we will live the Falcon Way." Please remember as you visist campus for events during May, we expect all stakeholders (students, staff, parents, & guests) to live The Falcon Way. Thank you for a fantastic year, and I look forward to seeing you at all the fun events ahead!

If I can ever be of assistance to you, please call, email, or stop by! GO FALCONS!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

Kindergarten

May is going to be a really fun and exciting time of learning in Kindergarten! In reading we will be learning to read words with blends such as sl, gr, pr, st, etc., words with digraphs sh, th, ch, wh, & ck, and words with long vowel consonant e (silent e). Our unit has been all about habitats and students are super interested in this. In math we will begin our unit on measurement. We will learn how to measure items by length & height using non-standard units, like linking cubes or paper clips. We will also learn how to compare the length or height of 2 objects. Then we will move on to measuring items by comparing weight.

It’s almost time to show off all of our learning from this year in P.E. during Kindergarten Relay Day on May 15th from 8:00-11:00. Parents are invited to come watch or help during this and then enjoy an end of the year class picnic with your child’s class. Lastly we will celebrate all our accomplishments on Kindergarten Award’s Day on May 20th at 8:00. Parents are welcome to come.

1st Grade

We are looking forward to entering the last month of school in 1st grade! Students are working on double digit addition and they are so excited to be doing 2nd grade math! Our end of the year fluency goal is 65 WPM and the students are working so hard to reach this goal. We are having so much fun learning about different animals, their life cycles, habitats and how their bodies have different features to help them survive. Students are working so hard in PE to prepare for our relay day on May 16th from 8:15-11:15, we hope to see you all there to support your child's class! Our 1st grade awards assembly is on May 20th at 10am and we are excited to celebrate our student's success. Happy last month of school!

2nd Grade

Second graders are closing out our reading unit on "Plants and Animals". The students have really enjoyed researching and compiling information on how plants help animals, and how animals help plants.

We are so thrilled to have ACAP behind us. The students ROCKED that test! We plan to spend the rest of the year spiral reviewing the material your students have learned this year through many fun games and activities.

As summer approaches, we ask that you PLEASE continue to read with your child everyday. It helps so much to keep them engaged and motivated in their learning throughout the summer, so that it is easy for them to pick right back up in August.

Second grade relay day will be Friday, May 17th. We hope you will make plans to cheer on your second grader that day! Our special Wing ceremony (awards day) will be held on Monday, May 20th. We are looking forward to closing out the year STRONG! GO FALCONS!

3rd Grade

WOW!! We can’t believe May is already here! We are so proud of how hard all of our third graders worked on their ACAP testing in April!! They all deserve to be celebrated!!

This month third graders will be completing our Reading unit on Animal Habitats by working on an informational writing piece about an animal of their choice. We will also have a demonstration by the Florence K-9 unit. In Math, we will finish up our lessons on Area and Perimeter by completing several hands on activities.

Be on the lookout for information about our upcoming third grade FUN DAYS- these are themed days that make the end of the year exciting!! Thank you for supporting your child this school year! We hope everyone has a safe and fun summer!!

4th Grade

Our FHES 4th graders rocked ACAP in April and are ready to have some fun! During the month of May, we will be looking closely at live Dwarf Frogs and Crabs with the AMSTI Animal Studies unit. For a history and reading crossover, the students will be completing informative research papers on famous Alabamians, historic sites in Alabama, or an Alabama state report. We are all looking forward to showing our teamwork skills on Relay Day, Friday, May 17th. Let's make this last month one to remember!
