From the Principal
Happy New Year, Fairview Families,
I hope you and your family had a restful and joyful holiday season, however you celebrate. As we move into the second half of the school year, there is a lot of excitement around Fairview as we continue building momentum together.
Shortly after returning from Winter Break, all Fairview students will take their second iReady assessment of the year. Teachers will meet individually with students to review their previous results, set goals, and talk about next steps for continued growth. These results will help guide instructional priorities and inform upcoming RTI groups that will begin later in January. As always, we appreciate your support in encouraging your child to give their best effort.
Now that students are back in the building, we are grateful for the energy and enthusiasm they bring each day and look forward to continuing our strong partnership with families in the months ahead.
Sincerely,
Tyler Simmons
Principal

Winter Weather Procedures & Reminders
As cooler weather arrives, we encourage our families to dress their students accordingly. At this time of the year, it is hard to predict the weather, so dressing in layers is always prudent.
Please see the graphic below that explains Fairview's expectations for wearing a winter coat.
*A Special Note About Recess: Please take a moment to talk with your child about snow expectations. There will be days when students go outside for recess even if there is snow on the ground, so make sure they come to school with appropriate outerwear such as boots, jackets, and gloves. Itâs perfectly fine for students to explore and touch the snow, but snow should not be thrown at others.
Fairview Receives Grant Money
We are excited to share that the Columbia Public Schools Foundation has awarded Fairview a check for nearly $6,000! This generous grant will support continued improvements to the outdoor benches located on the northern part of our campus, as well as help fund our MAP celebration â We are incredibly grateful for this support and look forward to enhancing both our outdoor learning spaces and our schoolwide celebrations in meaningful ways for students.
Monthly Update From Our Specials Teachers
From the Gym
Hello Fairview Families!
Welcome back from what I hope was a restful Christmas Break! Prior to the break all classes had been working on creative movements on the mats; always a favorite with the classes! Weâve done movements ranging from locomotor skills, animal movements, rolls, cartwheels and round-offs. Weâre finishing up those movements this first week back and playing Sailors and Sea Creatures with grades 2-5. Ask your kiddos how itâs going! Weâll follow up with a week of station rotations and then get into basketball skills.
Please check their A,B,C,D schedule and get those tennis shoes on. Unfortunately, that schedule is ever-changing so give it a look! Itâs always attached at the end of the Fairview newsletter. If they donât have them, they may not get to participate in all of the dayâs activities. There have been some situations where kids have had to sit out. Please help them be successful. Itâs a real bummer if your child must sit and watch because they forgot tennis shoes.
Finally, if youâve been in the gym lately you might have noticed the pictures on the bulletin boards. They are of our kiddos in action!! If you wish, send me a photo of your child doing something active or being outside and Iâll get it up on the board. Youâre welcome to send in a hard copy pic or email me one and Iâll get it up! Thank you to those of you who have sent in pics!
Again, welcome back!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wright
From the Media Center
I hope you all enjoyed the time off with your kids! I am looking forward to the months ahead. In January we are reviewing how to be good listeners and how to use technology appropriately. We are also covering another digital citizenship unit. Grades 2-5 will be refreshing their skills and learning to design in the Canva app. It is a great app for making posters, bookmarks, flyers and many other things. Kindergarten and 1st graders will be using the Clips app to make a video about themselves and some of their favorite things. These apps are great learning tools while having fun!

From the Art Room
Happy New Year Fairview Families! I hope your students had a great break and are ready for more fun in the art room. Just before break all grades started our Portrait Unit, learning that a Portrait is an artwork of people or animals as the main thing. Each grade level is working on different portrait projects. As students finish projects, they upload them to their digital portfolio in Artsonia, if you would like access to their account please email me and Iâll get it set up. Please reach out with any questions!

From the Music Room
December always brings a ton of fun to the Music Room. We performed movement activities to The Nutcracker, and all grade levels had our singing and coloring day. This is a Fairview tradition where we spend our entire class time singing familiar holiday songs and coloring together. It is a strong community building activity, and our students look forward to it each year. We wrapped up December with music celebrations for following the Falcon Four. Starting in January, our older students will be starting recorders. Our younger students will be playing xylophones!
Mrs. Dexheimer

Attendance
If your child will be absent for the day, please call and report their absence or email jhouston@cpsk12.org. If we do not hear from you, we will call to check on their wellbeing.
This year, all CPS schools will be using a few different attendance codes to help track absences:
PN (Parent Notified): This code will be used when a parent contacts us to let us know their child will be absent or when Mrs. Houston reaches out and the parent confirms they were aware of the absence. Please note: PN is considered an Unexcused absence, even if weâve been notified.
Truancy: If we are not contacted by a parent about an absence, it will be marked as Truancy. This will also trigger an automated robocall.
M (Medical): This code is used when a student is sent home by the school nurse or misses school for a doctorâs appointment. Please make sure to send a doctorâs note so we can mark the absence correctly.
Keeping open communication about absences helps us support your childâs success in school. Thank you!
Morning Drop-Off Reminder: Keep Traffic Moving!
Please help us avoid unnecessary congestion on Fairview Road during morning drop-off. Your cooperation keeps everyone safe and on time!
â Do:
Continue straight to the roundabout at Fairview & Rollins if the circle is full.
Re-enter the circle by heading south on Fairview to pull in safely.
Unload quickly and carefully to keep cars moving.
â Donât:
Stop northbound traffic by waiting to turn left into the circle when itâs full.
Block the flow of cars already unloading in the front circle.
Thank you for helping us make morning drop-off safe, smooth, and efficient for all Fairview families!
