Congratulation to Corbett Volleyball as they Advance to The Elite 8! Go Cards!
Game-Changers
It was Saturday morning October 28th, 2023. The morning of our second round state playoff game at home. The winner would advance to the Final 8, the part of the tournament that Corbett Volleyball had not been to since 2013. I was prepping for the match and preparing my pregame speech for the team when a friend of mine sent me a picture memory that showed up on her Facebook page that morning. It was a picture of the 2014 Corbett Varsity Volleyball team lined up in front of the small white bus ready to hit the road for a State Play-In match in Phoenix, Oregon. At first, I smiled and laughed a little remembering the trip with that crew as well as the many other adventures I have had with my teams over the years. And then I looked closer.
It wasn’t long before nostalgia turned to something deeper, a reflection on the meaningful impact that I believe that participation in high school sports has on those who are able to participate. Scanning the faces, I focused on each player and was astounded by the list I began to compile. In the nine years since the photo was taken, a lot had transpired and now I was looking at two mothers, a police officer, a firefighter, 2 nurses, a teacher, a doctoral student in chinese medicine, a licensed dietician, an environmental engineer, and a senior program manager of a nonprofit organization in Washington DC making big strides in the battle against food insecurity. Combined the team had completed 7 master’s degrees and taken on two male-dominated fields. To say that the team consisted of a group of fierce young women would be putting it lightly.
That season wasn’t a standout record wise. The year prior we had taken 4th at the state championships, but 2014 we moved up to 4A and experienced some immediate growing pains associated with the move. We were 23rd in the state when we took that trip to Phoenix, where we lost in 3. The team experienced winning seasons and losing seasons and seasons in the middle, but what they took from the time is truly what I believe matters the most.
More than the trophies we trained for and the recognition we earned as a program and as individual players, these women gathered important tools for their life toolbox through the sport of volleyball. They learned when to defend what is important to them and those they care about. They learned how to aggressively go for what they want in a world that promises to throw obstacle after obstacle in their path. They learned how to serve a volleyball but also how to serve their teams, how to make a room better by walking in, lend a hand when it is needed and serve others in a way that empowers those around them to become game-changers as well.
It just happened to be the 2014 team picture that fueled my speech, but there are many other pictures that could tell the same story. It was my own participation in volleyball and basketball that I believe not only served as a catalyst for my own education and career growth, but put within me a deep desire to coach. I am blessed to be a part of the magic that happens when a team becomes a family and to watch young women develop the strength and grit to fearlessly take on their futures, to become game-changers.

Middle School XC
Sunday, October 29th, Corbett sent one middle school girl and one middle school boy to run in the Super Champs races at the Stumptown XC Youth Championship in Western Oregon University.
Claire Horton (6th grade) completed the 3K race at a time of 12:16.30; which is faster than any time ever recorded in AthleticNet by any Corbett MS Girl—and she still has two more years of MS racing ahead of her!
Afterwards, Holden White (8th grade) set a PR with a time of 11:41.10.
Well done, Cardinals!
High School XC
Corbett Cross Country wrapped up another phenomenal season on October 24th with our District Championship. Some highlights of the race include:
Ellie Dodson, Aiden Harlow, Natalie Matias, Caiden McHenry, Logan Auble, Zevi Gross, Enrique Aguiluz and Asher Reymond all set Personal or Season Records.
Our women’s team placed 3rd among teams from the Coastal Range League.
Olivia McGrew placed 6th among Coastal Range runners.
Malena Mayell and Cyrus Kurkinen placed in the top 14 runners from the Coastal Range League.
From the first day of training, our captains, Joey Kirnan, Malena Mayell, Cyrus Kurkinen and Oliva McGrew set the tone for a successful season. Our captains along with fellow seniors Ellie, Aiden, Damian Simonds, Ethan Pinedo and Jesse Gomez will be missed. Even though we're losing so many strong runners and amazing people, we’ve got a strong foundation for Track and Field in the Spring and Cross Country in future years.

Student and Family Safety
The addition of a crosswalk guard from 7:30-7:45 am has helped to ease nerves, remind drivers to stop for families, and made the morning commute a bit safer for our community. Unfortunately, many drivers continue to ignore the 20 MPH speed zone and crossing in the morning continues to be dangerous. To further help this situation and take into account our mornings will soon be darker, we plan to also place flashing cones on each side of the highway during this time. Our hope is that these cones will remind all drivers to slow down and drive cautiously during morning drop off.
Operation Helping Hands
Interview of Todd Williams
By Michelle Carter Smith
Todd Williams is the Transportation Director for the Corbett School Districtand his job involves a variety of responsibilities.
*Knowledge of all ten Corbett bus routes and checking the safety on all of the routes in bad weather.
*Knowing most all of the bus-riding students by name
*Mechanically maintaining all 13 buses and two vans owned by the district and certification to perform all bus inspections
*Overseeing management of the bus riders, including student safety and student behavior
*Overseeing all bus drivers and interacting with the entire staff of the school district
The furthest bus stop for the school district is just past Bonneville Dam at the Cascade Hatchery at the Eagle Creek exit. One of the "extra" buses will eventually have all seats pulled out and be used as a moving van to transport items to the new Corbett Middle School on Woodard Road. Todd will work with a few high school students on how to prep an old bus for recycling.
Todd was born in North Portland and is the fourth of five children born to his parents who were married for 55 years. His mom passed away two years ago and his dad is retired from Boeing and now lives in Fairview. All of his siblings live locally except his sister who just moved to Georgia. Todd grew up near both sets of grandparents and they were a strong support to his family in many ways. As a youth, his family moved several times but always stayed in the Portland area. Both his grandfathers had a strong work ethic and shared that with Todd when he was able to work at different times with each of them. Todd's father also had a very strong work ethic. As a kid, Todd was a bit of a rascal but was motivated to work hard and graduate from high school. In the middle of Todd's sophomore year, his family moved to Corbett, which was closer to Boeing, and gave his mom the country life she always wanted. In 1994, the family made the move to Corbett, staying 3 years. Todd graduated from Corbett High and was named Prom King and his girlfriend, Carrie Evans was the Prom Queen. They ended up dating for six years and then married. After graduation, Todd worked at Multnomah Falls at the espresso cart. One day while splitting wood with a friend, he was offered a new job as a shop gopher at Evergreen Waste Systems, located in Washougal. It later was bought out and became Waste Connections. While working there, Todd decided to go back to school and further his education for future job opportunities. He attended Mt Hood Community College and then transferred to Portland State Univ. to complete his bachelor's degree in psychology in 2006. He then went on to earn his master's degree from Pacific University in 2008. He majored in counseling psychology with an emphasis on cognitive-behavioral therapy with an emphasis on children and adolescents. He continued to work the entire time he attended school! Todd said his wife Carrie was his "solid rock of support" that helped get him through. Todd and Carrie started their family once he completed all of his schooling. They have two children, both attending Corbett, and Carrie also works for Corbett School District. Sayvin is 14 years old and a freshman who enjoys both soccer and electronics. Evanly is 11 years old and is a social butterfly who just loves people. After completing his master's degree, Todd worked as both a counselor and a mechanic simultaneously for nearly two years and it was simply too much to carry both jobs. The best choice for his family at the time was to choose his job as a mechanic. He worked from 1998 until present as a heavy equipment mechanic. Dorthy Hayden let him know in 2016 that Allan Greathouse, the previous Transportation Director for Corbett, was about to retire. It seemed like a great opportunity since Todd had recently become certified with Western Bus Sales to inspect Oregon school buses. Todd was hired and really enjoys his job with the district because he gets to use his mechanical skills as well as his many years of schooling to learn how to best work with kids and their families. He also conveniently lives just down the road from the bus garage!
