A Note from Dr. Hooks

Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

Happy Friday! I hope you all enjoy this long weekend. Instruction will continue on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

As announced by Mayor Bowser and Chancellor Ferebee on October 5 and shared in our special edition newsletter on October 6, all DC Public Schools are scheduled to implement the DCPS Hybrid Learning Model, beginning November 9, 2020. We have provided several updates below and will continue to share guidance, as it becomes available. We thank you for your collaboration and patience as we receive and disseminate information.

Please keep you and your loved ones safe. For resources and information about the District of Columbia Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov. Please visit dcpsreopenstrong.com or backtoschool.dc.gov for DCPS virtual learning resources.

Kindest Regards,

Term 2 Frequently Asked Questions

For a comprehensive list of Term 2 FAQ, please visit dcpsreopenstrong.com/faqs.

Who Is Eligible To Attend An In-Person Learning Classroom?

All students who were enrolled as of October 5, 2020 will be eligible for a seat. Students who fall within the following categories will have preference for the available in-person learning seats:

  • Students experiencing homelessness,
  • English Learners and students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), and
  • Students identified as At-Risk. (This includes students in the foster care system, and students who qualify for TANF or SNAP.)

When And How Do I Know If My Student Received A Seat For In-Person Learning?

Families will receive notification via email by October 23 followed by a call from the school if they received a seat. Schools will call all matched families within the first 2 days of releasing matches.

Once the school speaks to a family, the family has up to 2 school days to confirm their seat. If a family does not respond within that timeframe, they will lose their offer and their student will continue with learning at home. If a school cannot reach a family, they will keep trying, but a seat will not be held for more than 5 school days for non-response.

A family will always have the option to continue learning at home and can decline a matched seat.

What Are The Classroom Sizes For The In-Person Learning Options?

Each school may enroll up to:

  • 8 students in PK3
  • 10 students in PK4 and K
  • 11 students in grades 1 – 5

What Is A Student CARE Classroom?

Also known as custodial care, the Canvas Academics and Real Engagement (CARE) classrooms will provide supervised virtual learning. Students will continue with their virtual learning with a small group of classmates, within the school building.

PK- 1st grade students who are selected for this program option are scheduled to start the week of November 16 and 2nd– 5th grade students who are selected for this program option are scheduled to start the week of November 30.

Will Aftercare Be Available For Students Who Return To In-Person Learning In Term 2?

No, aftercare will not be provided for students who return to in-person learning in Term 2.

LSAT Members

We are excited to share that Mr. Quigley, Ms. Mitchell, and Ms. Smith-McDermott will serve as parent representatives on the LSAT for the 2020-21 School Year. The LSAT will hold virtual meetings monthly. The meeting date and time will always be included in the bottom section of the newsletter where key dates are listed as these meetings are open for the entire school community to observe. Please note that the first meeting has not been scheduled yet so it is not posted at this time. Although no parents utilized the nomination form that was shared in the last two newsletters, we are grateful that they are willing and able to share their perspectives by serving in this volunteer capacity.
