High School Teacher of the Year

Davison High School teacher Ryan Kelsey was named as the 2025-26 High School Teacher of the Year. Ryan teaches art at Davison High School and received several nominations from parents and co-workers. One wrote:

"Mr. Kelsey has spent the majority of his 30-year career transforming the lives of his students and the halls of Davison High School. His art classes have applied the lessons learned in his class to real-world murals that bring life and excitement to the school. His passion for environmental conservation has blossomed into actual gardens on school grounds. Students are able to see how their work manifests in ways that bring joy to others. There is no greater purpose as a human than to share one's enthusiasm in a way that is accessible to others. Mr. Kelsey is a reminder of this purpose. He is an inspiration for his students, colleagues, and the community."

Mr. Kelsey is also a co-sponsor of the DHS Environmental Club and was key in the development of the Cardinal Garden, an on-site garden where students plant and harvest vegetables throughout the summer. He also participates in the Michigan DNR's Salmon in the Classroom program and has been working the past couple of years trying to obtain a Safe Routes to School grant to improve the walking and biking conditions for the students of Davison Community Schools.

Ms. Green received four nominations, all from students, including one who wrote:

"I think Ms. Green should be awarded Teacher/Support Person of the Year because she makes the classroom environment feel safe. She understands that kids sit at desks all day and that our brains are still developing, and makes sure to find ways to make her lessons fun. She always makes sure to explain stuff the best she can, finding creative ways to keep us engaged in her lessons. She embraces our creativity and goes above and beyond to support her students, even when she's not at school. Earlier this year, I sent her the link to my live dance competition and asked if she wanted to watch my singing solo. It was my first time singing at a competition, and I expressed how nervous I was because I was coming down with a cold and it was starting to affect my voice. The day before she set a timer on her phone to make sure she didn't miss my performance. When I came to school the next day, she congratulated me and told me how good my performance was. I knew my singing wasn't the best but her enthusiasm and support made me feel a little better about it. I really appreciated how she was there for me, even when she was busy. She has always loved us like her own and always gives us her full undivided attention. She is one of my favorite teachers."

When it comes to parents, Connie ensures they receive all the information necessary to support their children's success, whether it's straightforward or difficult to discuss. For students, she consistently goes the extra mile—offering comfort during tough times, making wake-up calls to encourage them to attend school because she understands the importance of their presence, and being there to provide snacks or advice whenever needed. She constantly thinks of ways to bring students together and support them in any way she can. Connie is retiring this year, and she will be greatly missed. There is no one who can truly replace her, but we will do our best. She deserves the best retirement because she has been exceptional for DAE. Davison Educational Foundation Mini Grant Winners Davison Educational Foundation Mini Grant Winners

This year, the Davison Educational Foundation received nine grant requests totaling nearly $11,347.42 The DEF awarded seven of the requests totaling $9,897.42. But wait - there are no losers here because two of the grant requests will still be funded, but by the District.

The winning grants include:

  • Get Ready, Get Set, Move - submitted by Thomson Elementary DK teachers Andrea Bell, Melissa Schwab, Caitlin Smith and Karla Ruzicka. This $599.92 grant will be used to purchase equipment recommended by occupational therapists to help grow students’ gross motor and fine motor skills to help prepare them for the rigor of kindergarten. These tools - including items such as balance boards, wobble cushions, yoga blocks, cones and hoops and weighted balls can be used to help improve self-regulation, attention and focus, coordination, core strengthening and balance.

  • Classroom Cruisers - submitted by Siple Elementary teachers Evelyn Harig, Ali Schaibly, Kayla Meyer, Kelly Fritz and April Wiltse. This $2,600 grant will be used to purchase three Classroom Cruiser stationary bikes that will allow students to reallocate their energy and assist with their learning. There is substantial evidence that suggests physical activity is linked to positive academic and behavioral outcomes including improved self regulation and cognitive skills.

  • Busy Bus Bags - submitted by Carly Morgan, Erin O’Connor, Melissa Jones, Abby Ganabathi, Leandra Lints and Michael Romanik. This $1,200 grant will be used to provide activity kits for kids to stay busy on the bus. Thomson Elementary provides some of the first learning opportunities that students have and that includes riding the bus. These busy bags will help students who may become distracted, overstimulated or have difficulty remaining in their own space.

  • Leveraging Edpuzzle for Increased Student Engagement and Improved Learning Outcomes submitted by Davison Middle School teachers Anthony DeRosa, Janet Green, Jennifer Lunde, Mike Williams, Courtney Richard, Eric Monroe, Sarah Smith-Clark, Julie Pattee, Amber Rogers, Kim Lawrence, Kari Konkle-Szaro and Julie Naughton. During the 2024-25 school year, 40 teachers actively used Edpuzzle, an innovative educational technology solution that allows educators to design interactive learning experiences for their students in the subjects of math, science. ELA and social studies. Students are also able to provide audio responses to open-ended questions. This $2,897.50 grant will allow teachers access to the premium version - which, currently, 10 teachers are independently covering the cost on their own.

  • Recycling at DHS and DAE -submitted by Pam Ruggiero and and Ryan Kelsey. This $1,000 grant will be used to purchase high quality plastic bins for the purpose of collecting paper and plastic bottles/aluminum cans for every classroom and office on the DHS and DAE campus and carts for students to collect the recyclable materials twice a month.

  • Kindergarten Monthly Book Club - submitted by Thomson Elementary teacher Emily Williams. This $600 grant will allow Emily to continue her classroom’s Monthly Book Club, a cherished initiative designed to promote early literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Each month, each student receives a high-quality book to take home and keep, along with a meaningful activity that encourages family engagement and reinforces comprehension. For the past seven years, the Monthly Book Club has been funded entirely by donations from friends and family. However, due to the rising cost of books, it is no longer sustainable to continue the program without additional support. This grant will help provide 11 books over the school year to each student in Mrs. Williams’ classroom.

  • Hahn Intermediate Gardens - submitted by Hahn teacher Laura Ferguson. This grant will be used to establish a Garden Club in the 2025-26 school year that will offer students a chance to learn about the science behind gardening. This will include lessons about plant structure, plant needs, soil composition and planning for gardening. Students will grow, cultivate and produce crops.

When Hahn Intermediate opened in 1998, Lorie moved into the new building teaching sixth grade until 2010 when she moved back to the middle school to teach eighth grade math. She finished her career teaching math advancement.

Just like her husband, Trevor, Lorie retired after the first semester and is enjoying the chance to relax at the family cottage on Higgins Lake, take trips and visit her boys in Pittsburgh.

Lorie said teaching on her sixth grade team holds the most memories. Field trips to Ligon, canoeing, hosting lock-ins, bowling, competing in the staff vs. student volleyball games, and all the costumes and shenanigans with the team’s skeleton, Pedro, are the most memorable.

Lorie is married to Trevor, and they have two sons, Logan and Camden.

Jan Crawford

Jan first came to DCS in September of 1990 as a student teacher from Michigan State University assigned to Alice Hartman, a fourth grade teacher at Central Elementary. A few short months later, Jan was hired as a long-term substitute teacher for third grade Gates Elementary teacher Sharon Hammer. She became “official” in 1991 when she was hired as a third grade teacher at Gates. In 1994, Jan transferred to Davison Middle School to teach language arts, social studies and health. Jan developed and taught Broadcasting Basics as an elective in 2016 and in 2019 went back to teaching careers and health.

Jan’s retirement plans include taking time to catch up with her retired friends, travel, enjoy MSU tailgates with her family and read while she will likely search for the perfect part-time job.

Jan is married to Alex, who is still working at Stryker. Son, Ethan, 23, is living in Chicago working for Weber Grill in supply chain and daughter Sloane is 21 and finishing up her degree in marketing and sales leadership at Michigan State University.

In sharing advice to her successor, Jan has the following to say: “I was so fortunate to have my mom, a teacher for 55 years in Grand Blanc, as my daily motivator and inspiration to constantly strive to be a better teacher and be there for my kids each and every day. This is a challenging job as we all know, so don’t lose sight of the rewarding part - keep making those positive differences for the kids who need you.”
