From the Principal’s Desk
Gunnison Middle School Families,
What an exciting start to the school year! After a busy summer of major renovations, it has been wonderful to see our students and staff settling into the newly remodeled spaces. The upgrades are not only working smoothly, but they are also creating an environment that feels fresh, welcoming, and ready for learning.
Our 8th grade students kicked off their year with the annual Taylor Challenge, a three-day adventure filled with rafting, rock climbing, archery, and fishing. This trip gave students the chance to build friendships, challenge themselves, and create memories that will set a positive tone for the year ahead.
We are off to a fantastic beginning, and I am looking forward to everything this school year holds for our students, staff, and families!

Now that we’ve had a week of getting to know each other here at GMS, I wanted to introduce myself to everyone! My name is Sara Lamar and I am the school counselor at GMS. This is my 16th year as a school counselor and my 9th at GMS. I absolutely LOVE my job and am so grateful to be a part of this GMS family. As you probably already know, or are quickly finding out, middle school students are characterized by rapid physical growth, curiosity about their world and an emerging self-identity. I love that I can have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe, respectful learning environment where our students can maximize their personal and academic goals. This year, I’ll be working with individual students, small groups, and classrooms to promote personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set informed academic and career goals and help all students at GMS realize their full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of our global community. I also help coordinate several student clubs and groups at the school, coach basketball, DJ random and planned dance parties, and try to come to as many school events as possible. Please reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or celebrations at any time and I look forward to another fabulous year! Go, Mustangs!
