Farm to School Program Update
The Farm to School Program has finished the initial garden plantings, and now many of the crops are left to grow over the summer for harvesting later. While there are some experimental crops planted, there are many for late summer and fall harvest so our students can see the fruits of their efforts (or vegetables!). This crop selection is intentional to do our best to coordinate harvests for when our students are on campus. There are also numerous flowers planted to help attract and help out our native pollinators.
The greenhouse space has no plants in it at this time as the sun is starting to bring us summer sunshine, and we are in the season that the greenhouse helps us extend. May had record rainfall which, unfortunately, did negatively impact our plant growth due to constant soil moisture, lower temperatures, and many, many overcast days. Gardening is always an adventure!
A native wildflower patch has been seeded next to the greenhouse to help attract more pollinators, to have a variety of native wildflowers, and because flowers are beautiful. We are excited to see this space grow.
During summer programming there are students that will be tending to the garden to help weed, harvest, plant successionally, and experiment with the flavors the garden brings us. In the meantime, we wait for our plants to soak up the sunshine for the next few weeks.
We have harvested most of the spring crops with a mix of greens and radishes making their way into the High School Food and Nutrition Program service line!
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) --- A New Program for SAU 34
Week One of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is "in the bag"! We are so excited to offer this brand new program and get it running as smoothly as possible.
The SFSP allows us to distribute bulk bags of food to children 18 years or younger. The SFPS is a program that is offered through the USDA and overseen by the NH DOE Office of Nutrition Program and Services. We are excited to be eligible for this program, and hope to be able to continue to offer it for future summers. Our program offers bulk breakfast and lunches for Tuesdays through Saturday all summer long.
If you would like to participate and did not during week one, please sign up using the QR code on the flyer to join us! Please sign up by the end of the day on Fridays if you are new so we can order food accordingly on Saturday mornings!
If you signed up for week 1 and confirmed you're coming next week, you are all set!
If you have any questions about the SFSP, please reach out to Anna Muncy at amuncy@hdsd.org.

2025 School Climate Survey for Families
Dear SAU #34 Families:
We want to hear about your experience with your student’s education. We invite you to complete the annual School Climate Survey. This survey includes questions about your student’s learning, school safety, and interpersonal relationships, as well as your perceptions of the school environment and your personal involvement in school. Your responses are critical in our mission to improve student relationships, learning conditions, and the overall school environment.
We invite all parents, guardians and caretakers to complete this survey for our schools. The survey is completely anonymous and brief; it contains 22 questions and will only take a few minutes to complete. You can take the survey online by clicking on the google form below.
All responses are completely anonymous. We have no way to connect you to your answers, and results will only be reported as group responses. There are no right or wrong answers. We just want to know about your personal experiences. Responses will be housed securely on the District systems.
As you respond to each item, think about your own personal experiences as a parent, caregiver or guardian at your student’s school. We hope you will take the time to provide us with this valuable information. Feel free to call your student's school office you have any questions. Each school’s total survey results will be used to inform and develop appropriate strategies, procedures, and/or programs to enhance our school climate. Please submit your responses before June 30th.
Thank you for your time and participation!

School Food and Nutrition Program Information
End 68 Hours of Hunger Program
Our local End 68 Hours of Hunger Program serves the students of SAU 34 which includes: Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School, Hillsboro-Deering Middle School, Hillsboro-Deering High School, and Washington Elementary School.
The Problem
Childhood food insecurity is a national problem, it occurs when children receive insufficient food on a regular basis; in many cases missing meals entirely. After a while, these children also experience “fear of hunger” that affects their behavior as much as physical hunger affects their bodies. There are more than 6.4 million food-insecure children in American households today.
How End 68 Hours of Hunger Helps
This program puts nourishing food in the hands of school children to carry them through the weekend. Each bag of food, provided through food and financial donations, provides two breakfasts, two lunches, and three dinners for a child, with some left over to share!
