The halls were filled with so much energy and so many smiles on August 27 as we welcomed everyone back for the new school year. We had a great start, and it was awesome seeing our students so excited to be back. We're looking forward to an incredible year together.
All parents are welcome to our annual Open House/Meet the Teacher Night on September 11. We will begin promptly at 6:00 PM with a meet and greet for all parents. You can find the full schedule and times for the evening in this newsletter. Please note that parking is limited around the middle school, so we encourage you to plan accordingly to ensure we can start our presentation on time.
As you prepare for the new school year, we also ask that you take a moment to review the Student Handbook, which is available on the District Web Page. Please pay special attention to the bullying policy so that both you and your student are familiar with it.
Inside this newsletter, you will also find important updates and information from our school nurse, guidance department, assistant principal, and various other people in our school community. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to help!
Sincerely,
Josh Belvis

School Status
If you have any questions or issues regarding SchoolStatus please send an email to the following address:
From The Assistant Principal
Drop-off/Pick-up:
Students should be prepared for the start of the school day and in homerooms by 7:40. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:25, but should wait in the cafeteria until the 7:30 bell sounds. Doors will not unlock to students until 7:25, please do not drop off before then.
Student safety is always a top priority. Please exercise caution as it can be difficult to see around other vehicles. Be sure not to pass school buses or vans when their red lights are flashing, as doing so jeopardizes safety and is unlawful and subject to fines. Also, please be careful to not block buses when turning into the pick-up/drop-off area, as their visibility as they round the corner by the auditorium is poor.
In the afternoon when you pull up out front, please leave room for the vans as they need to be able to park in front of the school. Starting the car line behind the flag pole until the dismissal bell leaves more than enough space for vans to pull up.
Please do not park in the fire lane or on the roadway beside the auditorium (between the building and the side parking lot). Parking beside the auditorium causes bus drivers to have to cross into the left lane, where there is frequently a line of cars in the oncoming traffic lane, making it difficult for buses to safely pass.
Walking/Riding:
Middle school students are allowed to walk/bike to and from school without written or verbal permission from a parent/guardian. The decision to walk or ride a bike is between the student and the parent/guardian. Parents/guardians are reminded that local businesses have asked that students do not hang out in the stores or parking lots. Walking home unsupervised by an adult is a large responsibility. If you feel comfortable with your child walking or riding their bike, please review road safety tips with your child.
Attendance:
Attendance at school is expected of all children on a regular basis. If your child will be absent, please call the school absence line prior to 10:00 A.M. at (781) 618-7375. Pursuant to Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 222 Acts of 2012: The school will notify parents or guardians in the event that a student has missed 5 or more school days, unexcused, in a school year, requesting a meeting to develop action steps for student attendance.
Tardy Policy:
Students should be prepared for the start of the school day and in homeroom by 7:40 to avoid being marked tardy. If a bus/van is running late, teachers will be notified and students will not be marked late. Students will receive a consequence on their 5th tardy in a quarter.
After School Activities:
We will be putting together information on after school activities and enrichment in the weeks to come. We hope to have information available to students within the first few weeks of school, with an estimated start date of September 29.

School Nurse News
WELCOME BACK!!
With the start of another school year, it is always important to remember to be cautious with keeping your sick child home in order to prevent the spread of illnesses among students and staff at school. If your child is experiencing more than one symptom such as cough, sore throat, congestion, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or fatigue, they should stay home and be seen by their pediatrician as needed. They should return to school when they have improved and are well enough to participate in school.
Fever - If your child has a fever of 100 or higher, they need to stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without taking any fever-reducing medicine.
Gastrointestinal Illness (vomiting and/or diarrhea) - your child should stay home until 24 hours after vomiting and/or diarrhea has resolved, they are showing improvement, and they feel well enough to participate in school.
LET’S ALL HAVE A SAFE AND HEALTHY 2025/026 SCHOOL YEAR!
REMINDERS
- ANNUAL STUDENT HEALTH UPDATE FORM: this form comes home with ALL students on the first day of school. Please complete both sides/pages of this form and return to school as soon as possible.
- GRADE 7 PARENTS: If you have not done so already, please send in your child’s current physical form and immunization record so I can confirm immunization compliance per state law for all grade 7 students.
- MEDICATION AT SCHOOL: All medication orders need to be renewed with the start of each school year. The Medication Authorization Form needs to be completed by the parent and prescribing doctor in order for me to accept the medicine at school. Please be sure to bring this completed form when dropping off medication to me. Some doctors may use their own order forms, but the student information and parent section of the Medication Authorization Form still needs to be completed and brought in with the medicine as well. PLEASE NOTE - all medication needs to be brought in by a parent/guardian with the proper forms at the beginning of each school year to be sure I have all the required documentation.
- INJURIES/RESTRICTIONS: If your child has sustained an injury, we must have a note from the doctor stating the child’s physical limitations/restrictions, including a gym excuse note and order for the use of assistive devices such as crutches or a wheelchair.
Thank you and as always please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Making responsible decisions and handling challenging situations constructively~ Responsible Decision-Making
The purpose of SEL is to make each student feel connected, inspired, and engaged.
School Council
Are you interested in getting involved with your child’s education in another way? If you are, then think about whether you would be interested in joining the Hanson Middle School Council (also called the School Improvement Council). By law, every school is required to have a School Council. The group is made up of parents, teachers, and at least one community member.
The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards;
- Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school;
- Reviewing the annual school building budget; and
- Formulating a school improvement plan.
We will meet 4 times during the school year. The meeting schedule is as follows: Wednesday October 8, Wednesday December 10, Wednesday February 11, and Wednesday May 13. Each meeting is about an hour, starting at 3:00 PM, and ending around 4:00 PM. Emails will be sent prior to each meeting to inform you whether it will take place or is being cancelled and the reason for cancellation
From the Hanson Public Library
Dear Parents,
The Hanson Public Library serves as a community resource to residents of all ages and strives to preserve an atmosphere of safety and respect among all patrons.
The Library is a short walk from Hanson Middle School, and many students choose to visit the Library after being released, particularly on half days. We are glad to be a gathering place for Hanson’s youth and welcome them to make use of the wide variety of services we offer in a responsible manner. During the previous school year, there was concern about how some middle school students conducted themselves at the Library. Staff and patrons reported incidents of rude, intimidating, and disruptive behavior; offensive language; disrespect; vandalism; and a disregard for staff and other patrons.
All Library users are expected to exhibit behaviors appropriate to a public place. Parents should be aware that students who are disruptive or do not abide by Library policies may be asked to leave the Library for the remainder of the day. Parents are encouraged to review the Library’s Code of Conduct and Safe Child Policy, which are available at hansonlibrary.org/policies.
The support of parents is crucial to helping us achieve our goal of creating a welcoming place for Hanson’s students and providing a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all patrons. As the 2025-2026 school year begins, we ask that you speak with your children about appropriate behavior in the Library. Should you have any questions or concerns about the Library’s services or policies, or your child’s use of the Library, you are welcome to contact me via email or phone. I also invite you to stop in with your child to visit us in person. Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Karen Stolfer

Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15th marks the start of the 30-day-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is unique because it is observed from the middle of September through the middle of October. This is because, before it was extended to a full month in 1988, Hispanic Heritage was a week-long celebration starting at the culturally significant date of September 15th. September 15th is the Independence Day of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This is followed by the Independence Days of Mexico on the 16th and Chile on the 18th. Take the opportunity this month to explore Hispanic art, learn some words in the Spanish language, and delve into the rich cultural traditions of Hispanic heritage throughout history.

We have Hilliard’s Chocolate bars available for student fundraising. This fundraising is for all grade 8 students. Students staying home from the D.C. trip are still able to sell chocolate bars to reimburse the cost of their two field trips. Selling two boxes of chocolate will reimburse the cost of the two local field trips in full. Students or parents can purchase a box of candy bars from Mrs. Laferriere in the main office for $50. Each box contains 40 chocolate bars which can be sold for $2.50 each. There is a $50 profit from each box sold and you may apply the profit directly to your students account or may use it for spending money while in D.C.
