Why Attendance Matters

The research is clear: Attending school regularly and consistently matters for the future success of all of our Wildcats. Specifically, the skills our students are building in Kindergarten and first grade are directly linked to proficiency in reading when students get to the third grade and beyond. But equally important, our Wildcat community is an even better place when your child(ren) are present for learning and participating in the school day! Below you will find some important research and data that demonstrate the importance of consistent attendance.

  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10% of the school year can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
  • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attendance Laws and TUSD Board Policies

California Law, Section 48260, section A states that a student subject to mandatory full-time education who is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than a 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, shall be classified as a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.

TUSD Board Policy 5113 states that regular attendance plays an important role in student achievement. The Board shall work with parents/guardians and students to ensure their compliance with all state attendance laws. Absence from school shall be excused only for health reasons, family emergencies and justifiable personal reasons, as permitted by law, Board Policy and Administration Regulations. (Education Code 46010, 48216, 48205).
