When You Take Your Job Seriously!

Principal's Message Principal's Message

Hello, Families,

Daylight Savings is this Sunday, Nov. 2nd. This can be a tricky adjustment for our students (and for us grown ups!). Please help students with bedtimes and wake ups next week.

Staff Underground Spirit Week gave daily laughs for staff and students this week! The kids had a great time figuring out the daily theme. Thank you, clinic aide Kristin Harper, for coordinating. You can see some of our fun above!

Reminder - Report cards were sent home last week. If you have not already, please sign and return the envelope to your child's teacher as we will be using those again for your child's next report card.

This Week's Question Around the Dinner Table:

  • Who is a classmate you are proud of?
  • What is one part of your day you know so well you could teach it?

Have a great weekend,

Sharon Suriano

Principal

On Tuesday, November 11th , Goshen Lane Elementary will celebrate Veterans Day by honoring Veterans who are relatives or friends of our students. There will be a school assembly at 1:45 PM. Prior to the assembly, veterans are invited to a light reception in the Library at 1:30 PM. All visiting veterans will be escorted by their students to the assembly. The assembly will last approximately 30 minutes. Veterans are invited to stay to talk with and share their experiences in their student’s class following the assembly. School dismisses at 2:40 PM. If your family has an interested Veteran who would like to attend, please sign up on the Veterans Day Family Letter. A paper copy of the letter went home with students this week, or you can print it from here.

During the assembly we would like to share pictures of our veterans: either with the Goshen student, or while in service to our country. If you have pictures you are willing to share please email them to: Mrs. Angie Buchert bucherta@gjps.org.

Naglieri (NNAT) - Grade 2 and Grade 5 Naglieri (NNAT) - Grade 2 and Grade 5

Each year, around this time, students in our district are administered a cognitive ability test in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15.

Students in grades 2 and 5 will take the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT) assessment during the month of November, and results are expected to be shared with families in December. Our grade 2 students will take this assessment on November 5 and our grade 5 students will take this assessment on November 12.

This is a standardized test given to many students across the country that measures reasoning abilities. The results of this test provides families and teachers with information that can be added to the overall classroom picture/profile of students’ ability, thereby helping to inform instructional decisions.

Letters went home with all 2nd and 5th grade students this week. For digital letters, see below.

Literature Connections for our Kinders and Second Graders! Literature Connections for our Kinders and Second Graders!

Thanks to the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation (GJEF), our kindergarten and 2nd grade students were able to participate in enrichment activities this week related to their current Wit & Wisdom unit. Kindergarten students visited a farm animal petting zoo at Jefferson Elementary to learn more about the animals they are reading and writing about in their Once Upon a Farm unit. Second graders had the opportunity to engage in a children’s homestead experience related to their American West unit. They had fun learning how to grind corn, wash clothes, and comb wool. Thank you to our Instructional Coach, Abbi Herzberg, for coordinating these exciting events!

So Much Going on in MUSIC with Mr. Downing!

Our first quarter of the year has been a great review of previously learned musical concepts, especially in the area of rhythm. (Rhythm is short or long, rhythm matches the words.) We have explored these ideas with singing, instruments, movement, improvisation, composition, and more!

A special highlight of September and October was our ongoing celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, using Spanish language songs and chants in every grade to explore our musical concepts.

We are also preparing to welcome veterans for our November 11th ceremony, which will feature musical leadership by third graders. Thank you to those who have served!

Questions to ask your student:

  • Which rhythms do you know? How many sounds on how many beats?

  • Can you teach me to write the musical rhythm symbols?

  • Which Spanish language songs did you learn, from which countries?

  • What is a “veteran,” and why do we thank them?

Into the Woods

The Gahanna Lincoln High School Theater Department is so excited to present our first ever FALL MUSICAL! Please help the theater students celebrate their last chance to perform on the Gahanna Lincoln High School old stage Nov. 13th, 14th, and 15th. Come travel with us "Into the Woods" and "On to the New Stage". We will also be announcing our spring show opening night! Ticket Link

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.

he story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. One of Sondheim's most popular works, Into the Woods is a wonderful show that features student driven choreography, projections, design, and performances.

As a district, Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools wants to ensure our families have what they need. The attached flyer contains a list of local food pantries that may be helpful to you.
