SMS Students Sweep Awards at Annual Polaris Palooza Event SMS Students Sweep Awards at Annual Polaris Palooza Event

Our Strongsville Middle School robotics teams dominated the competition at this year’s Polaris Palooza event - bringing home top finishes across the board! Polaris Palooza brings together middle school teams from each of their partner districts (North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, Brooklyn, Berea-Midpark, and Fairview Park) in competitions featuring two robotic challenges, “Mad Grab” and “Dragster.” Mad Grab has students directing a machine to see how many balls it can retrieve and dump into a container in a specific period of time. Dragster challenges students to build a vehicle that can travel the farthest on a straightaway track. SMS Award Winners in each event included:

Dragster Event - Out of the 36 middle school teams competing in this event:

1st Place – “Draco” (Aarav Patel, Hitarth Patel, Alex Votruba)

2nd Place – “Cobra” (Micah Gupko, Krishay Patel, Abhinav Subramanian)

Mad Grab Event - Out of the 18 middle school teams competing in this event:

1st Place – “The Supreme Snatcher” (Rachit Battini, Harshith Nelabhotla, Ani Varigonda)

2nd Place – “H.A.M. Sandwich” (Evan Hockett, Ishaan Jayant, Henry Jevec)

3rd Place – “Dr. Robotic” (Jonah Ehrlich, Baylor Freese)

Incredible teamwork, creativity, and engineering on display - we are proud of these students for representing SMS at the highest level!

Our District has been awarded $13,000 to expand hands-on learning opportunities for students interested in exploring careers in the high-demand construction industry and will support implementation of a nationally recognized pre-apprenticeship program, with student programming expected to begin at Strongsville High School in Fall 2026. This initiative advances the SCS Strategic Plan Goal 3.6: strengthening and expanding career pathways for students.

In addition to grant funding, Build Trades Foundation has generously offered to provide significant local support, including student toolkits and funding for program costs during the initial years. Build Trades will also help facilitate job site visits, manufacturer-led training, and provide direct connections to a network of builders and skilled trades professionals, creating clear pathways to post-graduation employment.

Mustang Spotlight - Mr. Scott Benson, SCS Audio Visual Coordinator Mustang Spotlight - Mr. Scott Benson, SCS Audio Visual Coordinator

Mr. Scott Benson has been a part of Strongsville City Schools as our Audio Visual Coordinator for 21 years and will be retiring at the end of this school year. During his tenure with our District, Mr. Benson has worked with students in developing their video and production skills through SCS-TV. He has also been a part of countless video projects, highlighting our Strongsville City Schools in many different ways. Whether it’s music concerts, athletic events, Board Meetings, or other highlights of our District’s classrooms (just to name a few) Mr. Benson has been an integral part of bringing video to life and connecting with our community.

“The best part about my job is that I get the opportunity to work with literally everyone in our District. From the Superintendent to kindergarten students, and everyone in between. It's very enlightening to get everyone's perspective, and to get a feel for how they see their role across all of the schools throughout our District. I really enjoy working with talented and committed people. This includes fellow staff members, teachers, and especially students. It's great to see young learners as they grow and develop a sense of themselves, and how they fit into the world. It's nice to be a small part of that.”

Thank you Mr. Benson for your continued work in helping to share the positive stories of our District with our community! #ModelMustang
