A Note From Dr. Hooks

Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

Thank you for an incredible first week back to school! It has been a joy to see our students settling into their routines and engaging in learning. Please note that DCPS will not have school on Monday, in recognition of the holiday. We also want to remind you that Back to School Night is next Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. Doors are slated to open at 5:00pm, to meet the Student Support Team, Inner Core Teachers, Multilingual and Special Education Teams, the PTA, community partners and community organizations.

If you need extended Champions after care services that evening, please connect directly with Champions. For families who do not have students currently enrolled in Champions, please complete the link under "News and Updates" to request child care services from the school, for currently enrolled Hyde-Addison ES students.

We also want to express our gratitude for your patience and cooperation during morning arrival and dismissal. As a friendly reminder, please do not park in the "Kiss and Ride" lane during morning arrival or stop your car in the middle of the road, as this blocks traffic. Additionally, refrain from parking in front of the school where the buses are slated to park in the morning and afternoons. While parking directly in front of the school is limited, there is typically parking available on several side streets and P Street. Thank you again for your continued support and partnership!

As always, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov, with any school specific inquiries.

Kindest Regards,

Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal

Hyde-Addison Elementary School

Morning Arrival Supervision Reminder

If your child arrives at school before 8:10 a.m., they must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Students may enter the building starting at 8:10 a.m. to receive breakfast.

Drop-Off Traffic and "Kiss and Ride" Reminder

To keep traffic flowing smoothly during morning drop-off, there is no parking allowed on O'Street, in front of the school. This area is designated as a "Kiss and Ride" zone, meaning you should quickly drop off your child and continue driving. Your cooperation is essential in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our morning routine.

The "Kiss and Ride" zone is designated for K-5 families only. Pre-K families must sign students in and out daily, so please use the side streets for parking to fulfill this requirement.

Cross Country Running 2024-2025

This year Hyde-Addison will offer cross country running as an after-school activity available to 4th and 5th grade students. Cross country is long-distance, outdoor running. At meets, elementary students will run 2 miles, however, they will be expected to run up to 3 miles in one practice by the end of the season. In order to ensure the safety of the runners, students will be required to try out for the team.

Practices and meets will be held rain or shine, so students should be willing to brave the elements! If your student is interested in cross country, please reach out to Ms. Wiegmann, Hyde-Addison’s athletic director, at megan.wiegmann@k12.dc.gov no later than September 6th. Tryout and practice dates will be announced soon.

DC CAPE Data

Per the Executive Office of the Mayor, "Each spring, DC students in grades 3-8 and in eligible high school courses complete statewide assessments in ELA and math. These assessments measure mastery of grade-level content standards. From 2015 to 2023, the District was a member of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and administered PARCC assessments in ELA and math. In 2024, the District transitioned from the PARCC assessments to DC CAPE, a rigorous assessment that measures proficiency of the District’s high grade-level expectations. This was a change in name and governance only. DC CAPE uses the same design – number of questions, types of questions, and length of assessment – as PARCC, and scores are comparable across years.

The assessments have five performance levels that are based on student scaled scores – with level 4 and level 5 indicating that a student meets or exceeds proficiency expectations for their grade level. Performing at these levels means that students have met the District’s rigorous grade-level academic expectations, indicating they are building necessary skills for success in a wide range of post-graduation options."

Please see below, for an overview of the 2024 scores for Hyde-Addison ES and DCPS. Student specific data will be shared with families, when available.
