Dear Families,
Next week, our school will focus on the character strength of Open-Mindedness. This means being willing to consider new ideas and try new things. It involves looking at situations from all sides and not jumping to conclusions.
Open-mindedness is about seeking out and fairly weighing evidence, even if it goes against our own opinions or goals. Open-minded people listen to different viewpoints, including those that are less popular. They are often good listeners and provide balanced advice, which makes them great friends and confidants. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.
To practice and encourage the character strength of open-mindedness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
FOUNDATION DINE OUTS
Join us on Friday, September 19th for our Dine-Out Fundraiser at Rubio’s and Jersey Mike’s! It’s the perfect chance to support our school while picking up a delicious meal. Even better, it’s a great option to bring along to the Family Picnic that evening—enjoy good food, community, and a fun night together!
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
Based on feedback from families and staff, the district is working on improvements to make the volunteer process more efficient and user-friendly.
While our new system is being finalized, we are still welcoming volunteers. For now, anyone interested in helping on campus can do so as a visitor until our updated process launches, tentatively scheduled for mid-September.
We encourage you to take this time to complete your TB assessment so you’ll be ready when the updated system is in place. We will share more details as we get closer to launch. You can learn more about this process by visiting the District website.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Our volunteers truly make a difference in the lives of our students.
APPLICATION FOR FREE AND REDUCED-PRICE MEALS
Under California’s Universal Meals Program, all PUSD students continue to receive school breakfast and lunch meals at no cost. The Application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals, however, is still very important for meal reimbursement purposes and for LCFF funding. Because income eligibility guidelines change annually, families must reapply every year. Please encourage households to apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or to complete a paper application. Students that meet income criteria for free or reduced-price meal eligibility may qualify for additional benefits, such as discounts on after-school care, AP testing fees, transportation, home internet, and some utilities. Families with questions about the meal application should call PUSD Food and Nutrition at 858-668-2570.

It’s Library Time!
Let’s Travel Around the Library - Canva Presentation
Here are some good habits to reinforce in the classroom and at home:
Make note of your library day. Books are due weekly, and can be turned in earlier if you want.
Please remember to put books in backpacks the night before your library visit. Books need to be returned to the teacher's library book spot upon arrival at school.
Find a safe place at home to keep library books so they don't get lost or damaged.
Use clean hands when reading a library book and turn the pages gently. Use a bookmark.
It's strongly encouraged to keep library books in a large plastic ziploc bag to protect it against food and water spills in backpacks.
Keep library books away from food, water, pets and younger siblings.

How can you support the library? There are many ways.
The used book sale will be held every Thursday, unless it’s raining, just outside the library. Proceeds of the sale go to buying books that students are asking for. It’s a great way to support the library. Only 25 cents a book!
Support your child’s love of reading by donating new books to the library! Any new hardcover books that are purchased and donated are greatly appreciated! Here’s a link: Amazon Wish List. Donated books will have a book plate in the front of the book with your child’s name and they’ll have first check out privileges.
Another way to support the library is to donate gently used children’s books appropriate for TK-5th grade, Method Cleaner spray, kleenex, copy paper. You can drop them off in the library with a note.
Happy Reading!
