Wolverine Weekly Updates
Week of April 14 - April 18
A Message from Mrs. Ushery
Greetings Wynbrooke Family,
We had another great week of Teaching and Learning! Congratulations to Ms. Clark's 1st grade class who won first place in our March Madness Attendance Challenge! These scholars had perfect attendance everyday in March with no tardies! We celebrated them yesterday with a pizza party! Great job Ms. Clark's class and THANK YOU parents! We have a busy week and month ahead!
We're now just 8 instructional days away from the Georgia Milestones—and every day counts. We need all students present, on time, and ready to learn each day to make the most of this critical time. Our teachers are committed to helping every student grow as a strong reader and writer, and your partnership at home makes all the difference! Here are three easy, high-impact ways you can support your child each night:
1. Read & Talk About It
Have your child read for at least 20 minutes every night—aloud when possible. After reading, ask your child to:
-
Summarize the main idea
-
Describe a character’s actions or feelings
-
Predict what might happen next
These conversations boost comprehension and thinking skills that show up on Milestones questions.
2. Write a Response to Reading Every Night Using the GaDOE Writer’s Checklist
After reading each night, have your child write a short response (5–7 sentences) based on what they read. This helps them practice using text evidence and organizing their thinking—just like they’re expected to do on the Georgia Milestones.
Here are some examples of nightly response prompts:
-
What is the main idea or theme of the passage?
-
What lesson did the character learn?
-
How did the author use text features or structure to help the reader?
-
What is your opinion about what the character did? Use evidence to support it.
Before turning it in, ask your child to review their writing using the Georgia Milestones Writer’s Checklist:
📝 GaDOE Writer’s Checklist
✔ Did I stay focused on the question and include all important ideas?
✔ Did I include details and evidence from the text to support my answer?
✔ Did I organize my ideas clearly (beginning, middle, end)?
✔ Did I use complete sentences and proper grammar?
✔ Did I choose the best words to express my ideas clearly?
✔ Did I capitalize, spell, and punctuate correctly?
✔ Did I reread and revise my writing to make it clearer?
3. Build Vocabulary Through Talk
Pick a “word of the week” from their reading or schoolwork. Use it at the dinner table, in the car, or during homework time. For example:“Predict” – “What do you predict will happen in the next chapter?”
This helps them grow the vocabulary needed for Milestones reading and writing tasks.
Please take a moment to review the Milestones testing dates section below and explore the resources provided below, including the Georgia Online Experience, which you can complete at home with your child to help them feel more confident and prepared.
🔹 Attendance Reminder:
We need your support in ensuring your child arrives at school on time. Students can be dropped off between 7:00 - 7:45 AM and are considered tardy at 7:46 AM. To help ease morning traffic, we encourage families to arrive early.
🔹 Morning Car Rider Drop-Off Reminder:
Morning car rider drop-off ends at 7:45 AM. If you arrive after this time, you must park and walk your child inside to sign them in for school. Let's work together to ensure our scholars start their day on time and ready to succeed!
🔹 Parent Volunteer Hours:
We are closing out the school year with only a few volunteer opportunities left! if you have not completed your required 16 parent volunteer hours, please sign up for volunteer opportunities below!
Thank you for your continued support in making Wynbrooke the BEST school in the DeKalb County School District!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Proud to be your principal,
Mrs. Devetra Ushery

Greetings Wynbrooke Families!
By now each family that have NOT completed their volunteer hours should have received an email from me letting you know how many hours have been completed and other options to get your hours satisfied before the deadline. Remember you are required to complete 8 volunteer hours for each semester for a total of 16 to be completed on or before May 16, 2025. That is the absolute last day to complete your hours. For every $10 that is spent, you will earn 1 volunteer hour, or the time spent assisting during school events can also count towards your hours. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at Jaumekia_M_Caver@dekalbschoolsga.org
Thank you again for all you do to support our school it is very much appreciated!

Media Center Updates
From the desk of Ms. Jelks, Media Specialist
Dear Parents,
Reading opens the door to new worlds, sparks creativity, and keeps our minds engaged even while we rest. We encourage all students to make reading a daily habit and take advantage of the wonderful opportunities available through Beanstack!
Students, we invite you to track your reading on Beanstack to stay motivated and monitor your progress over time. By logging in through Clever, you can record the books you read each day, participate in monthly reading challenges, and even earn badges and rewards! We encourage students of all grade levels to read independently for at least 20 minutes each day.
Parents, you play a vital role in fostering a love for reading. You can support your child’s reading journey by setting aside dedicated reading time, engaging in discussions about books, or making visits to your local library a part of your routine.
We look forward to hearing about the amazing books your children discover!
Happy Reading!
Ms. Ashlee Jelks

New Dates! Please review the changes!
If you are looking for resources to help your student prepare for the Georgia Milestones, please visit:https://gadoe.org/assessment-accountability/georgia-milestones/
You will find parent information flyers, printable study resource guides, links to practice sites, and more...
Also work with your scholar to complete the Experience Online Testing Georgia practice site lets students see what testing online is like. Parents and educators are welcome to try it too. The items on the demonstration tests are general and are organized by grade or course in the content areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The guides and demonstration tests are not graded, so have fun!
The items do not necessarily represent the specific grade-level content that students learn daily in their classrooms. The primary purpose is to let students experience, firsthand, the functionality of the online testing platform. The sample tests are not graded.
