A Message From Principal Glenn
August 5, 2025
Dear BHMS Community:
As we continue to implement the new weapons detection system on our campus, we gain insights into opportunities to shorten the entry times for students and how to best support arrival during inclement weather days.
Screening Times: Today, screening began at 8:15 a.m. and wrapped up at 8:50 a.m., a 5-minute delay from our regular start time of 8:45 a.m. To help shorten this window moving forward, we'll begin opening the entrance at the bus loop at 8:10 a.m. Students who arrive early can enter at that time and head to the cafeteria for breakfast or wait there until it's time to go to class at 8:30 a.m.
Inclement Weather Plan: In the event of inclement weather, we will make the following adjustments to ensure a smooth and safe entry process:
Students who typically enter through the main entrance will instead enter through the Adams Street entrance and line up inside the building to proceed through the weapons detection system.
Students who enter through the Bus Loop & Kings Highway entrance will continue to use those doors, but will also line up inside the building before screening.
At the City Schools of Decatur, the safety of every student is our highest priority. We appreciate the ongoing support from our school community.
Sincerely,
Alexis Glenn
STAR Testing Begins Tomorrow August 6
We will once again be using the Renaissance STAR Assessment as our universal screener in both ELA and Math this school year.
The Renaissance Star Assessment is a nationally recognized, computer-adaptive tool used from Pre-K through 12th grade to measure student progress in reading and math. These assessments help educators identify learning gaps, monitor student growth, and tailor instruction to meet individual student needs. At BHMS, STAR supports our mission to ensure student success by helping teachers recognize strengths and provide targeted academic support where needed.
Please note: The STAR screener is not graded. It is used solely to inform instruction and ensure each student receives the appropriate support.
BHMS STAR Universal Screener Testing Dates:
August 6th: STAR Reading
August 11th: STAR Math
We kindly ask that all students:
Get a good night’s rest before each testing day
Arrive to school on time by 8:45 AM, ready to begin
Eat a healthy breakfast either at home or at school (breakfast starts at 8:20 AM)
Important Note About Results:
STAR reports will not be printed for middle school students. If you would like to access your child’s assessment results, you can sign up to receive STAR progress email updates.
