Principals' Message
Happy December Scioto Families!
We hope that this newsletter finds you coming off a joyful and memorable Thanksgiving holiday. As we enter into December, we cannot help but reflect on the accomplishments from November. We have had opportunities to open our doors to our community for events such as Veterans Day and several musical performances all of which we are extremely proud of AND grateful for!!!
Veterans Day gave us an amazing opportunity to share our gratitude to our Scioto family members who have served our country in the Armed Forces. Students decorated the hallways, sent letters/cards of gratitude, and our 2nd grade students performed a great music performance honoring all the Veterans in attendance.
Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have worked hard to perform great musical events throughout November and two more coming this week! We are proud of the work they've put in and grateful our families could enjoy these special memories.
As we enter into the winter season, we are reminded of the cold weather coming. Please make sure students are properly dressed to have outdoor recess as we will get them outside as much as the weather permits.
Consistency is something we communicate with our staff and strive for especially around the holiday season. We believe this approach is best for all. We will continue learning and growing our students as winter break approaches, however, we would also like to celebrate the season with students. Please be on the lookout for information for a holiday party from your child's teacher in the coming weeks. Each class will celebrate on December 17th with some sort of event either in the morning or afternoon.
Thank you so much for being a part of this community. Thank you for the support you provide each of us here at Scioto and, as always, thank you for being a partner in your child's education and trusting us to serve them our best each and every day!
Wishing all of our Scioto families Happy Holidays!

R3: Step Up!
Here are a few key learning goals we are teaching students through STEP UP:
- It is your job to take the action that will get you the outcome you want.
- Own your response (Own your R).
- Your R is most important when your E is most difficult.
- Nobody wants adversity, but everyone will face it in life.
- Have resilience and STEP UP to these challenges and respond with courage.
Check out the resources below that we will be utilizing during ouR time to help our students understand the purpose of STEPPING UP to the events in life. These stories help students understand that when adversity happens or any life event, have courage and STEP UP.

Guidance
I have enjoyed spending time with students during classroom guidance lessons! So far, we have discussed the school counselor's role and ways to identify, express and manage our emotions. Other topics have included kindness, empathy and gratitude. See the article below from On Our Sleeves for tips to help support your child's emotional development.
One of the most important parts of the human experience is feeling the range of emotions we go through in our lifetime. Even at a young age, the emotions children experience, from happiness to sadness, can lead to enriched life experiences and improved relationships on the journey to adulthood.
Emotional Empowerment allows us to experience these emotions. It teaches us how to have better control over our emotions when necessary – especially strong negative emotions like anger, fear and anxiety.

Library
First of all, I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU for all of your help and support and for making the Time Machine Book Fair a fun time for all!
December will fly by!! We will be having a check out, read alouds, and Library Lingo game for 2nd - 5th grade. Kindergarten and 1st grade will be playing a new game of Character Bingo. We will be talking about different popular book characters as we are playing.
Music
Kindergarten: Our kindergarten students have learned the comparatives fast/slow and loud/quiet and have been practicing these concepts through a variety of activities and songs. As we enter the winter season, we will be learning some new winter songs and games.
1st Grade: 1st grade has learned a new music rhythm we call “ta” (quarter note)! They have been working on reading music with this new rhythm and have also been reading “high and low” on the music staff. As we enter the winter season, we will be learning some new winter songs, games, and we may even get the opportunity to learn an additional rhythm!
2nd Grade: The 2nd graders did a fantastic job at Scioto’s Veterans Day Assembly. Thank you to all of the Veterans who came to Scioto so we could celebrate you. If you have a Veteran who was not able to make it or you want to see our Veterans Day Assembly, here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqOJuqKUgpM&t=1560s
3rd Grade: 3rd graders are in the final preparations for their music performance taking place on December 1 (Aquino and Heck) and December 2 (Farrar and Wasem) at 7:00pm in the Scioto gymnasium. They will be showing the audience some of their favorite activities from music class. A link to their performance will be available after December 2.
4th Grade: The 4th graders rocked an amazing Informance and shared with families some of their favorite activities from music class. If you missed it or you want to watch it again, here are the links for each Informance.

They are now continuing to work on learning their recorders, reviewing rhythms, and learning new rhythms!
5th Grade: The 5th graders did a great job at their performance on November 18! They took their tall tales to new heights with their amazing sets and props and did a great job making sure every single role, on stage and behind the scenes, was covered. Gym
The world of physical education is going well. Students are participating in many activities in all grade levels. We have been working with hula hoops and honing in on those skills. Some of the classes are very talented. We started with our swim noodles. The students are impressing me with their ability to try new things. Grades 4-5 will be beginning with floor hockey soon. They will begin following an NHL team they will play for that team. Happy Holidays everyone!
