SAEBRS Parent Letter
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of Colonial’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of our students, WE are excited to use the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behaviors Risk Screener (SAEBRS) with students throughout the district to guide the social-emotional and behavioral instruction and support in our schools. The SAEBRS is a brief universal screening questionnaire whose results will be used by schools to identify the support that will be provided to the entire student body as well as to individual students, if needed.
You are receiving this letter because your child’s class is participating in the SAEBRS screening during the 2025-2026 school year.
The screening process is simple. Each student completes a 20-item computerized screening questionnaire. Students are provided with a statement (for example, “I participate in class.”) and then asked to select a response of “never”, “sometimes”, “often”, or “almost always”. Total administration time takes approximately 1-3 minutes. This screening questionnaire will be administered up to three times per school year.
You can find additional information on the SAEBRS by visiting https://www.illuminateed.com/products/fastbridge/social-emotional-behavior-assessment/mysaebrs/
You may request that your child does not participate in this screening by contacting:
Principal: TeRay Ross, (302) 323-2880
SAEBRS Coordinator: Courtney Waters, (302) 323-2886
Estimada familias de New Castle,
Director: TeRay Ross, (302) 323-2880
Coordinadora de SAEBRS: Courtney Waters, (302)323-2886

Hello families! Our fourth graders are working very hard as all learning has officially begun. Students are using a new math program this year. In an effort to support learning from the classroom at home, we would like to introduce you to the Caregiver Unit 1 overview! This shows you skills that students are working on in their math class, sample problems, practice problems, and an answer key. Students may complete this at home to further their understanding of skills in class. Please reach out to us if you have any questions!
The Fourth Grade Team
¡Hola familias!

From Our 5th Grade Team:
Hello 5th grade families!. Thank you for taking an active role in your learners future by sharing your strength and skill with them. This week your learner will define, describe, and construct arguments and ideas about Economic Systems/Production Methods in Social Studies. In Amplify Desmos Math, students are explaining, examining, and constructing ideas about volume, and will be quizzed sometime this coming week. In ELA, using Amplify CKLA, students are using, connecting, and writing ideas about personal narratives. Ask them about the stories they are developing! Let’s have a great week on purpose, sincerely, Mrs. Casson, Mr. Stiner, & Mrs. Nesbitt
From Our Special's Team:
Band: Greetings, NCE Band Families! A lot more acceptance letters were sent home this week. Please make sure you are making arrangements to rent an instrument from Music & Arts. Rental information and how to rent an instrument is attached to the packet I sent home with the acceptance letter. Borrowing an instrument from a family member or friend is an option, as well. If you don’t think either of these options will work for you, please reach out to Ms. Schussler at kerry.schussler@colonial.k12.de.us and I will do my best to try and accommodate you. Lesson schedules are being finalized and will be sent home next week. Official orientations begin September 24 and 26, 2025!
Chorus: Chorus will begin the week of September 23rd. Mr. Morris will be sending out permission slips soon.

An Update From Our Car Rider Team
Thank you for all you are doing to help the car rider line move more smoothly.
Here are a few updates:
In the morning we have a LOT of students being dropped off. We want to respect your time and make sure that students have as much time as possible to get to class before instruction starts at 9:00. Please make sure your child is ready to get out of the car when you pull up to staff members. (ex. Toys down, bookbag and lunch box ready) We are asking that you stay in the car to say your good-byes. Staff members can help open doors and unbuckle seat belts if students need help. We expect this will help things to move more smoothly and appreciate your assistance.
If there is a change in how your child is getting home, please call the office at 302-323-2800 before 3:15 or send in a note.
Summer Collab: if you are picking your child up from Summer Collab before 4 pm we will direct you to a parking space when you come through the car rider liner so we ensure everyone's safety.
Will your child be late or absent? Submit the paperwork here!
