Grace & CourtesyHelping Children Learn Self-Discipline

“Considering the method as a whole, we must begin our work by preparing the child for the forms of social life, and we must attract his attention to these forms” - Maria Montessori “Considering the method as a whole, we must begin our work by preparing the child for the forms of social life, and we must attract his attention to these forms” - Maria Montessori

How to give a Grace & Courtesy Lesson

Grace and courtesy lessons are given as a group as a role-play. Each lesson isolates the positive behavior the teacher wishes to model.

  1. specific behavior is identified and defined
  2. preview of what will happen
  3. observe a role play of the lesson
  4. debrief about what the children saw and observed
  5. guided role play, allows the children to repeat the lesson

Here is a sample list of grace and courtesy lessons we use in our classrooms to establish a culture of confidence, independence, and peace.

Grace & Courtesy is a general attitude of graciousness and respect. We can only create it when first we model it with our own actions, and then with good-natured lessons, we demonstrate the way we do things in our class, or in our home.
