Here's a look at several back-to-school health-related guidelines:
Medication administration procedures - Beginning this school year, over-the-counter medications will require both a parent/guardian and physician, podiatrist or dentist authorization to be administered by Comal ISD campus nursing staff. Read the full letter here.
Attendance Information
ATTENDANCE FAQS
1. Comal ISD only allows 8 parent notes per school year.
*After the 8 parent notes are reached, it will have to be a doctor note to excuse an absence.
2. NOT all parent notes are excused.
*A list of examples for which an absence may not be excused is in the parent/student handbook you received electronically when registering your student and can be found on the district website under the students/families tab.
3. Comal ISD does not excuse outside of district extracurricular activities unless your student is a part of an off-campus athletics program that is built into their class schedule.
4. Comal ISD does not excuse traveling, being out of town or vacations.
*The only exception is if you have to go out of town for a funeral, or a family emergency.
5. Parents do not need to call and let us know that your student will not be at school.
* A phone call or voicemail does not excuse the absence. All you need to do is send a parent note or doctor note upon return to campus.
6. You can email notes to, lori.jarrell@comalisd.org or your student can turn them into the front office.
7. ALL notes need to be turned in or emailed within 2 days of the students return to campus.
*This prevents notes from being denied due to an attendance timeframe being closed and attendance no longer able to be adjusted.
8. ALL parent notes NEED to have a reason for the absence on the note. It does not need to be in detail.
*EX: “Death of a family member,” “Kept home from school because of illness,” “Family medical emergency” Etc.
9. It is NOT always excused when a student goes home from the nurse.
* It is the parent’s responsibility to verify with the nurse if this is nurse excused or not. If the nurse explains that she cannot excuse the student for going home, you will need to send a parent note or doctor note to excuse the class periods missed.
***This is just a comprehensive list of the most common information. Full information can be found in the parent/student handbook. That can be found on the district website www.comalisd.org under the students/families tab.
NEW CISD INFORMATION TO KNOW
Texas House Bill 114 - SAY NO TO VAPING
Parents & Students:
Students Caught With Vapes, Placed in Alternative Education Facility
Texas House Bill 114, which was passed by legislators last summer, mandates that any student found in possession of a vaping device on district property or at a district event will be placed in a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) regardless of the content of the device.
HB 114 is titled, "Relating to the possession, use, or delivery of marihuana or e-cigarettes on or near public school property or at certain school events."
24-25 Electronic Devices
Possession and Use of Personal Electronic Devices, Telecommunications Devices, Including Mobile Telephones
For safety purposes, the district permits students to possess personal telecommunications and other electronic devices in school; however, these devices are subject to the Student Code of Conduct, Acceptable Use Policy, and the discretion of the district and campus administration and personnel.
In addition, the following applies to all students:
- A student shall obtain prior approval before using personal telecommunications or other electronic devices for on-campus instructional purposes. [See policy FNCE].
- All personal telecommunications or other personal electronic devices must remain silenced or turned off and put away to prevent disruption to the learning environment. However, students may use personal telecommunications or other personal electronic devices while on campus during these designated times only - High School- before school and after school, during lunch, and during passing periods. Middle School- before school and after school. Elementary School-no use.
- The use of mobile telephones or any device capable of capturing images or video is strictly prohibited in locker rooms or restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or a school-sponsored event.
An authorized district employee may confiscate a personal electronic device, including a mobile telephone, used in violation of applicable campus rules. [See policy FNCE].
Any disciplinary action in addition to confiscation will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and in accordance with the student handbook. The student or the student's parents may retrieve the device at the conclusion of the school day and after paying the fee [See policy FNCE]. A confiscated device shall be released as outlined below:
- 1st offense - Warning + parent notification
- 2nd offense - $5.00 administrative fee + parent notification
- 3rd offense - $10.00 administrative fee + parent notification
- 4th+ offense - $15.00 administrative fee + parent notification
Confiscated devices that are not retrieved by the student or the student’s parents will be disposed of after 30 days. The district is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen telecommunications devices [See policy FNCE.]
In limited circumstances and in accordance with law, a student’s personal electronic device may be searched by authorized personnel [See policy FNF].
The student shall also acknowledge receipt and understanding of applicable regulations and shall sign the appropriate user agreements [See policy CQ]. Included in this handbook is the district’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) (Appendix C).
24-25 Dress Code
The district’s dress code prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine personal attire and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
- Any clothing, accessories, or visible tattoos that depict images or language that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, or advertise weapons, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or other substances are strictly prohibited. *Offensive is defined as indecent, sexually explicit, or advocates prejudice or discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or age.
- Any clothing and accessories that could be considered costume wear are strictly prohibited unless the clothing is part of a teacher-approved or campus-approved activity. Shoes must be worn at all times. Slippers are not permitted.
- Any clothing that is sheer, see-through, mesh, exposes the midsection, back, chest, or other areas that are considered private, are strictly prohibited. Undergarments shall not be visible or exposed. Spaghetti straps (a strap less than 2”) and tanks with oversized armholes are not permitted without a sleeved undershirt.
- Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be of a modest length. Clothing cannot have holes or frays that expose any undergarments or private areas of the body.
- All head coverings and hats must not be worn inside school buildings except for a cap or hat that is part of (1) a uniform worn at a school activity (2) for religious or medical purposes, or (3) part of a teacher-approved or campus-approved activity. Hoodies are allowed, but the hood must remain down while in the building.
- Facial piercings should be small and discrete. Jewelry and accessories that could be considered dangerous or could be used as a weapon are prohibited.
- Hairstyles must not detract from learning.
- District-issued student IDs must be visible before or during school hours for secondary students.
The standards listed above may not cover every possible instance of appropriate or inappropriate grooming or appearance. While it is inevitable that there will be differences of opinion as to the appropriateness of dress, grooming, and/or determining whether or not a student’s attire is disruptive or distracting to the educational environment, the final determination will be made by the campus principal.
If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the campus administration will work with the student and a parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes the loss of instructional time. Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
The principal, in cooperation with the sponsor, coach, or a person in charge of an extracurricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Students who violate dress and grooming standards established for such an activity may be removed or excluded from the activity for a period determined by the principal or sponsor and may be subject to other disciplinary action, as specified in the Student Code of Conduct. This includes UIL activities or other special functions. [See FO series].
Students in attendance as spectators are expected to dress in good taste. Exceptions will be permitted for bona fide religious reasons.
