St Anthony's School News

Principal's Message
The Beatles sang: 'All you need is love…Love, love, love…' And they were right!
God gives us an example of how much we are loved when we see the self-giving love of Jesus. It is God’s initiative: we didn’t choose God, God chooses us!
Through Jesus we have a new status: no longer slaves, but friends. We can be joyful and confident that we are part of a community formed in and witnessing to love.
Traffic Concern
We have received a complaint from a member of the public about parents blocking the roundabout as the parents try to turn into Servite Terrace to pick up their children.
While I understand the traffic congestion that occurs from 2.30-3.10pm each day, please consider the following:
- The Road Traffic Act prevents drivers from entering a roundabout unless they are also able to exit it. Therefore, whether you are heading west or east to turn into Servite Terrace, it is illegal to be stationary in the roundabout while waiting for the pick-up line to move.
- Have you thought about parking in the hotel/Chinese restaurant car park and walking into the school grounds to collect your child? This will reduce some of your wait times and congestion.
- Consider picking up your child/children 10mins later. At 3.05/3.10pm there are very few cars in the church pick-up line. Children can be picked up from the gate until 3.15pm. After that time, they will wait for you in the office.
- Is your child old enough and able to walk/ride to school rather than being picked up in a car? Better for their fitness and better for the environment.
God Bless

School Code of Conduct
A reminder that every member of the St Anthony’s School community must behave in the manner described in our Code of Conduct.
Our Code is like the 40km/h speed limit outside our school in the mornings and afternoons. It defines behaviours that keep our students safe: at school, and elsewhere. Children and young people surrounded by adult and peer behaviours as outlined in the Code are more likely to recognise and choose healthy relationships for themselves.
Conduct Statements
- You act safely and competently.
- You give priority to students’ safety and well-being in all your behaviour and decision making.
- You act in accordance with the values of the Gospel as defined in the Code of Ethical Conduct.
- You conduct yourself in accordance with laws, agreements, policies and standards relevant to your relationship with the school community.
- You respect the dignity, culture, values and beliefs of each member of the school community.
- You treat personal information about members of the school community as private and confidential.
- You give impartial, honest and accurate information about the education, safety and well-being of students.
- You support all members of the school community in making informed decisions about students.
- You promote and preserve the trust and privilege inherent in your relationship with all members of the school community.
- You maintain and build on the community’s trust and confidence in Catholic schools and the Church.
- You act reflectively and ethically.
- You allow students to have a voice in their education, safety and well-being
The Code describes the minimum requirements expected of all members of our community and that all in our community conduct themselves personally and professionally in a way that maintains public trust and confidence in our school and the Church. While mandatory language such as ‘must’, ‘shall’ and ‘will’ is not used throughout the Code, there is a presumption the conduct described is mandatory and therefore not optional.

Wellbeing
This year, St Anthony's has adopted a social-emotional learning program called RULER as a whole-school approach to emotional literacy. The program focuses on Recognising, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating our emotions. When we feel different emotions, it is important to have strategies and tools to help us hold onto, or move on from, emotions. This week at assembly we were introduced to the Meta-Moment Tool.
The Meta-Moment is a 4 step process, that can help us make better choices in the way that we express or manage our emotions.
Step 1: Sense
You recognize that something has happened in your environment, body, mind, or behaviour.
For example, you may notice that your heart is racing, or you’re clenching your teeth in response to witnessing an injustice or you may be in a great mood after receiving exciting news.
Step 2: Pause
You pause, breathing deeply and slowly to de-escalate and avoid responding in an unhelpful manner. When we take a moment to breathe in more oxygen, the chemistry of our brains changes. When we breathe too shallowly or quickly, the biochemical effects of stress or excitement can shut down our ability to think clearly.
By taking slow, deep breaths, we can relax our body and mind, activating our prefrontal cortex to feel calmer and problem solve.
Step 3: See your "best self"
When you see your “best self,” recall how you described your personal ideal and desired reputation. Calling to mind a positive image of ourselves blocks our mental access to negative self-images and unhelpful strategies, allowing us to adapt our behavior to the situation.
When we regularly practice considering our “best self,” we train our brain to participate in healthier emotion regulation.
Step 4: Strategise and Act
Once you have sensed an emotion, paused to take a breath, and pictured your “best self,” you can select a strategy that aligns with your “best self.” Depending on the situation, you may choose to use a thought strategy or an action strategy. Once you have identified potential strategies, you can choose an emotion regulation strategy that aligns with your “best self.”
