Reading-
What will we be learning this week?
Reading
What We’re Learning with Starry Messenger
Over the next lessons, students will explore Galileo’s discoveries, build strong writing skills, and dig into important language features. Here’s the big picture:
🔭 Reading & Understanding the Text
Analyze nonliteral language (like metaphors/phrases that don’t mean exactly what they say) and explain how it helps us understand the main ideas in Starry Messenger.
Recognize cause-and-effect relationships—why events happened and what they led to in Galileo’s life.
✍️ Writing Skills We’ll Practice
Complete a Quick Write explaining how an example of nonliteral language supports a main idea.
Write and revise explanatory paragraphs using facts, definitions, and details.
Collaboratively write:
two body paragraphs explaining why “the stars left Galileo’s eyes.”
a paragraph about how Galileo challenged tradition.
📚 Language Skills
Identify simple vs. compound sentences.
Find and copy compound sentences from Starry Messenger for an Exit Ticket.
Practice choosing words that show shades of meaning, especially words that describe levels of certainty (like maybe, probably, definitely).
Math
What We’re Learning
1. Reading & Writing Numbers (Up to 1,000)
Students learn that the position of each digit in a number gives it a value.
They practice writing numbers in:
-
Standard Form: 482
-
Word Form: four hundred eighty-two
-
Expanded Form: 400 + 80 + 2
This helps students truly understand the size of a number—not just how to say it.
2. Comparing Numbers
Students use their understanding of place value to compare numbers using symbols:
-
> greater than
-
< less than
-
= equal to
They look at hundreds first, then tens, then ones.
Example:
529 > 497 because 5 hundreds is greater than 4 hundreds.

Reading Specialist
Welcome back, 3rd grade students and families! My name is Mrs. Amanda Montgomery and I will be one of your child's Reading Specialists for this year. I am excited to start this school year by getting to know all of your child's strengths and then making a plan to help them grow as readers. Please do not hesitate to email me (amontgomery@marietta-city.k12.ga.us) or call, if you have any questions or concerns. This is going to be a great year of growth.
3rd grade will start their beginning of the year literacy assessments on August 4th. This process will take about 3 weeks to complete and it is very important for your child to be at school, ready to give their best! Thank you for all you do at home to support us here at school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amanda Montgomery
EIP
Reminder: Your student has made multiplication flash cards in class. Please encourage them to study the cards that come home to support strategy modeling in class.
IRR
I am an interrelated special education teacher; I will co-teach in Mrs. Baker and Ms. Castillo’s classrooms this school year. This is my second year teaching, and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade again at Park Street! If your child is in Mrs. Baker or Ms. Castillo’s homeroom and has an IEP, I will be their case manager this year. I will be your contact person regarding your child’s IEP needs. Please know that I am here to support your child and communicate with necessary staff information for the implementation of your child’s IEP. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
