Attendance Code Changes in PowerSchool
Starting this school year, parents will see a few new attendance codes in PowerSchool. These updates were introduced by the division to help us track and communicate student locations more accurately. For parents, this means more clarity when they receive an absence notice.
Here is a quick guide to the codes you may see:
- A – Absent, Unexcused: Student is not in class, and no reason has been provided.
PA – Parent Aware: Student is absent, and the family has communicated the reason.
L – Late: Student arrived late to class without notification.
PL – Parent Aware Late: Student arrived late, but the family provided a reason (e.g., returned from a morning appointment).
X – Exited: Student was present for initial attendance but left class early without prior notice.
PX – Parent Aware Exited: Student was present for attendance but was excused early (e.g., left for an appointment).
PIB – Present in Building: Student is not in their regular classroom but is accounted for elsewhere in the school (e.g., working in the office, meeting with a staff member, or writing an exam).
Traffic Management
Parents – We Need Your Help!
We’re asking for your support in keeping the FRH Parking Lot and Drop-Off Loop a safe place for our students. Every year, we work closely with our SRO to help monitor and enforce this. Help us out by remembering the following:
- Staff Parking access is not permitted during peak times. Bus and foot traffic already create congestion, and extra vehicles reduce visibility and increase risk.
- Drop-off lane is right-turn only (Westbound traffic only). No U-turns or left turns. These are prohibited, and signage is posted to remind drivers. (Please note: This is a ticketable offense.)
- Utilize the pump station parking lot, across the street, if you are traveling Eastbound.
- Follow the crossing guard’s directions. Vehicles must not enter the crosswalk area if students or staff are present. (Please note: This is a ticketable offense.)
Thank you for doing your part to keep our students safe!
Correction and Verification Forms due September 25
If you haven’t yet done so, be sure to complete the Correction and Verification Form—available through the PowerSchool Parent Portal—for each child in your family by 5 p.m. on September 25. The form includes annual declarations and consent collected for all students, even if none of your contact information is changing. Additional details are available on the Division website: Correction and Verification Forms. If you have any questions or issues accessing your Parent Portal account, reach out to the school office.

2026-27 Personal Mobile Devices at School
EIPS has outlined rules about the use of personal mobile devices for each grade level in Administrative Procedure 145: Use of Personal Mobile Devices. Processes outlined within this AP are based on direction provided by the provincial government through Ministerial Order 014/2024: Standards for the Use of Personal Mobile Devices and Social Media in Schools. This includes the use of various electronic devices, including smartwatches and Meta glasses. FRH also has a Student Handbook that provides additional details about Personal Mobile Devices for our school.
We encourage families to review our PMD plan with their child to ensure students understand where and when they can and cannot access their personal mobile devices at school.
Junior High New Curriculum Update: What’s Changing this Year
Alberta's new junior high curriculum takes effect in September 2027, and Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is piloting specific grades and some of the new courses starting this September.
Junior high students across Alberta will see updates to the Mathematics and Social Studies curricula this year. In addition, two new courses—Physical Education & Wellness (PEW), and Career Education & Financial Literacy (CEFL)—will be implemented. PEW combines concepts from the previous Physical Education and Health classes into one combined class. CEFL is a new course designed to support students in their journey toward career and financial independence in their teenage years. This is a province-wide change, the first major junior high curriculum update in over two decades.
Before the full rollout in September 2027, we’re using the 2026–27 school year as an optional piloting year. Piloting lets teachers test draft curriculum, build expertise and refine instructional practices. EIPS’ approach is deliberately careful, with continuity of student learning as a top priority.
What this means for our students:
- Grade 7 students in FRH will pilot all of the new curriculum subjects, with full piloting in Math, Social Studies, PEW and CEFL.
- Grade 8 students will fully pilot PEW and CEFL, with partial piloting in Math to ensure a smooth transition into Grade 9 and high school.
- Grade 9 students will continue learning the current curriculum in Math and Social Studies. There are no changes to Grade 9 PATs so the transition to high school stays predictable. PEW and CEFL are the new subjects that Grade 9 students will experience.
Pay school fees online!
Wondering when and how to pay for school fees? School fee information for the 2026-27 school year will be posted on the PowerSchool Parent Portal in late September. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted. NOTE: Additional fees may be added throughout the year—for example, at the beginning of each semester, as your child takes part in various activities, or they may be adjusted by changes in selected optional courses in junior and senior high school. If you’re unable to pay your school fees, you can apply to have certain fees waived. The application deadline is Dec. 15, 2026.
For more information, visit the Fees Page on the school website. Alternatively, contact Billie Mepham, billiejean.mepham@eips.ca, at FRH at 780-467-3800.
