Message from the Superintendent

Calm and peaceful are rarely used by educators when describing the first few weeks of school. But after the last few years, that is how most report feeling in our district. Entering our third week together in-person, I can confidently say it has been a wonderful start to the 2022-2023 school year.

Much gratitude goes to our parents for sending their students to school ready to learn. Strong support and thoughtful expectations are significant factors in success in school. The partnership with our parents is noticeable and appreciated.

Sure, every start to the year has bumps in the road. And our community’s response has been understanding and collaborative. Most hiccups are due to staff shortages affecting Lake Oswego and the country. We still need people to serve in student services, transportation, nutrition services, and substitute positions. Fortunately, unlike many other districts, we have our teaching positions filled with qualified educators keeping our classrooms whole and students progressing in their learning.

It's inspiring to hear students, teachers, and staff feel happy, at ease, and excited to learn!

Please Review Fire Safety Tips

Over the next few days, our region will be experiencing weather conditions, including east winds and low humidity, that remind us that we need to be mindful of the danger of wildfire. The Lake Oswego Fire Department has asked us all to review the safety tips below to make sure your family stays safe.

New All-in-One Application for School Volunteers

For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when spending time in schools.

To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.

Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.

Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.

Volunteer Application for LOSD can be found on every school and district website under Resources.

Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.

Drive Like School Routes Are Everywhere

Remember to watch for children. Families may be walking, bicycling on the street, or crossing at intersections or crosswalks near schools, in neighborhoods, and by bus stops. Children may dart into the street to catch a bus without checking for traffic. And children aren’t always the best at gauging distance and speed or knowing when it’s safe to cross.

LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard

The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard is updated. The dashboard shows the number of staff and students who have reported testing positive for COVID-19, regardless of school exposure.

Community Level: Low

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looks at the combination of three metrics — new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days, the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, and total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days — to determine the COVID-19 community levels. Using this data, the COVID-19 community level is classified as low, medium, or high. Clackamas County is currently in low (green).

SafeOregon

Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.

SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
